Jushin “Thunder” Liger (c) vs. Brian Pillman – WCW Light Heavyweight Championship match
Background: Brian Pillman was the first ever WCW Light Heavyweight Champion but on Christmas Day he lost the title to Jushin Thunder Liger. Pillman has earned his way back into title contention and gets his rematch tonight.
Previous PPV matches: This is a first PPV match between these two men.
SuperBrawl Record: Brian Pillman is 0-1, Liger wrestles at this event for the first time tonight.
Match: It’s a quick start between the two men with a mix of fast paced action and mat based wrestling. Pillman sends Liger to the outside but the referee stops Brian from jumping out at him. Back in the ring and Jushin hits a nice moonsault before sending Pillman out of the ring and then backflipping. It’s a real back and forth match from here with the two men exchanging holds. Liger applies a figure four which Pillman counters but they roll into the ropes which breaks the hold. Liger sends Pillman out of the ring before hitting him with a plancha off the top. Flyin Brian hits a big springboard clothesline back into the ring and then suplexes the champion out of the ring before diving out at him. It continues to be back and forth with neither man able to keep the other down. Liger hits a big superplex for a near fall and then looks for a flying headbutt but Pillman moves and then rolls the champion up for the three!
Result: Brian Pillman wins the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship by pinfall.
Review: This was a really fun match. A great performance from both men. Two of the best workers in the game in a real high flying classic. These two had a lot of chemistry and it made for a great opening match.
Rating: 7.5/10
Missy Hyatt interviews The Taylor Made Man who says that Marcus Alexander Bagwell should have accepted his offer to join his side.
Barry Abrams is a competition winner who gets to ring announce the next match. He gets boo’d.
Marcus Alexander Bagwell vs. The Taylor Made Man
Background: Terry Taylor, now the Taylor Made Man offered Marcus Bagwell the opportunity to join forces with him but Bagwell declined. Taylor and his new partner Greg Valentine would beat down Bagwell which lead to this match.
Previous PPV matches: This is a first PPV match between these two men.
SuperBrawl Record: The Taylor Made Man is 0-1 at this event whilst Bagwell wrestles at it for the first time tonight.
Match: The Taylor Made Man makes his entrance dressed like The Million Dollar Man. It’s a back and forth start to the match with both men battling to the outside and then back in. Taylor dominates for a while, hitting some big right hands and then slapping Bagwell around before hitting a powerbomb for a near fall. Taylor heads to the top and hits a splash for a two count. Bagwell rolls Taylor up out of nowhere and gets the three! Taylor gets up and nails Bagwell with a forearm before hitting a DDT and leaving the rookie laying.
Result: Marcus Alexander Bagwell wins by pinfall.
Review: This wasn’t a bad match. Not one that’ll go down in history either but it served the purpose of giving Marcus Alexander Bagwell a huge win whilst not slowing down The Taylor Made Man’s momentum either.
Rating: 4/10
Missy Hyatt is backstage with Harley Race who says that Lex Luger will leave tonight as World Heavyweight Champion.
Ron Simmons vs. Cactus Jack
Previous PPV matches: This is a first PPV match between these two men.
SuperBrawl Record: Ron Simmons is 1-0, Cactus wrestles at SuperBrawl for the first time tonight.
Match: The two men exchange right hands and boots in the early going. Simmons avoids a clothesline and Cactus Jack gets his head stuck in the ropes. Simmons controls the match from here, hitting a legdrop for a two count. Junkyard Dog is shown sitting in the crowd. Cactus Jack hits a legdrop of his own for a two count and then battles Simmons outside the ring, hitting his trademark elbow drop to the outside. Simmons hits a big spinebuster on the ramp. Back in the ring and Cactus hits a bulldog before going to the middle rope but Ron catches him with a powerslam for the three! After the match Cactus Jack attacks Ron Simmons. Out comes Abdullah The Butcher who attacks Simmons from behind. Junkyard Dog then slowly makes his way to the ring and fights off Cactus Jack and Abdullah The Butcher!
Result: Ron Simmons wins by pinfall.
Review: This was a decent match. I enjoyed the pace and the action. It was back and forth but you know you’re in for a treat when Cactus Jack is in action. Ron Simmons gets the big win though and it looks like we’re heading for a tag team rivalry.
Rating: 6/10
Van Hammer & Z-Man vs. Richard Morton & Vinnie Vegas
Previous PPV matches: This is a first time tag team match between these two teams.
SuperBrawl Record: Richard Morton is 0-1, Vinnie Vegas (as Oz) is 1-0.
Match: Van Hammer and Richard Morton kick off the match. Van Hammer shows off his power. Vinnie Vegas tags in and it’s back and forth between the two men. In comes Z-Man with a missile dropkick. Morton tags in but Z-Man takes control, battling to the outside where he hits a big plancha. Both men make tags and Vinnie Vegas takes the advantage for his team. Plenty of quick tags between Vegas and Morton as they keep Van Hammer from tagging out. Z-Man eventually get a hot tag and hits a sunset flip on Morton out of nowhere for the three!
Result: Z-Man and Van Hammer win by pinfall.
Review: This wasn’t a bad tag team match to be honest. The pace was good, dictated by Morton and Vegas. Vinnie Vegas looked really good to be fair. I’m not sure I agree with the result, I would’ve liked to have seen Vegas and Morton get the win. I’m not sure where this leads, it’s probably just a one one off.
Rating: 5.75/10
Schiavone and Bischoff hype up the next match.
Dustin Rhodes & Barry Windham vs. Stunning Steve Austin & Larry Zbyszko

Previous PPV matches: This is a first time tag team match between these two teams on PPV.
SuperBrawl Record: Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham are 1-0 at this event, Austin and Zbyszko wrestle at this event for the first time tonight.
Match: All four men go at it in the early going outside and inside the ring. Austin and Rhodes officially kick off the match and Dustin has the best of it. Windham tags in and wants some of Zbyszko, who tags in too. Barry dominates against Larry before tagging back out. Some double teaming from the Dangerous Alliance gives them the advantage. Austin keeps control against Windham. Dustin Rhodes gets a hot tag and picks up the pace against Austin. Madusa gets involved with a slap to the face of Dustin Rhodes which distracts him long enough for Austin to attack him. Austin and Zbyszko make quick tags against Rhodes until he makes the hot tag to Windham. Rhodes pushes Larry off the top rope and Windham hits a clothesline off the top rope for the win!
Result: Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes wins by pinfall.
Review: This was a good back and forth tag team match. It could have gone either way but really it was all about Barry Windham getting revenge against Larry Zbyszko. Not much more to say about this except that it was a solid tag team match.
Rating: 6.75/10
Eric Bischoff is dressed in a Michigan jacket as they talk about the upcoming Steiners match.
Missy Hyatt is backstage. She speaks to Ricky Steamboats ninja and we catch a shot of Steamboat meditating. Madusa then arrives and wants to speak to Steamboat. The ninja won’t let her so she slaps him and gets chased off.

All four men go at it until the Steiners clear the ring. The Steiners dominate against Beautiful Bobby, hitting him with a doomsday device before all four men get into it again. Bobby hits a low blow on Rick allowing the champions to take control until Rick makes the hot tag to his brother but he doesn’t have much luck for long as Bobby Eaton hits a top rope knee drop for a near fall. Anderson and Eaton hit a rocket launcher on Scott out on the ramp. Scott makes the hot tag to Rick who picks up the pace. Rick counters a doomsdays device with a powerslam and then hits a bulldog off the top for a near fall. Anderson then throws powder in Rick Steiners eyes and Rick accidentally suplexes the referee! Scott hits Bobby with a powerbomb and then the frankensteiner to which another referee counts the three! But I think we can see what’s coming here. Referee Randy Anderson disqualifies the Steiner Brothers for suplexing him!
Result: Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton retain the WCW Tag Team Championships by disqualification.
Review: This was a solid tag team match. Two really good tag teams with a lot of chemistry. This rivalry will go and go I’m sure. The result makes sense and protects both teams. A big win for Arn and Bobby.
Rating: 7/10
There’s an ad for Wrestlewar which features War Games.

Rick Rude (c) vs. Ricky Steamboat – United States Championship match

Rude and Austin attacked their opponents after the match, with Rude delivering two Rude Awakenings to Steamboat. On the February 1 episode of World Championship Wrestling, it was announced that Rude would defend the WCW United States Heavyweight Champion against Steamboat at SuperBrawl II. On the February 22 episode of World Championship Wrestling, the team of Sting, Steamboat, Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes defeated Rude, Austin, Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton in an eight-man tag team match. After the match, Rude executed a Rude Awakening to Steamboat.

The two men battle to the outside where Rude drops Ricky on the guard rail. Rude takes control, slowing down the pace. He hits a neckbreaker and a piledriver for a two count. Steamboat gets back into it, applying a figure four but Rude reaches the ropes. Rude rallies back with a clothesline and top rope axe handle. The two men collide in the middle of the ring and both are down. They exchange sleepers before Steamboat hits a superplex for a near fall. Steamboat hits clotheslines, back body drops and a chop off the top before heading back to the top but the ninja lays him out with a phone! Rude pins Steamboat and gets the three.
Result: Rick Rude retains the United States Championship by pinfall.
Review: I had a feeling that ninja was going to be Dangerously. This was a good match. Two experienced main eventers with a lot of chemistry. Rick Rude wins the match and retains the championship.
Rating: 7.75/10
Backstage Missy Hyatt goes to Rick Rude’s dressing room where we see Paul E Dangerously dressed as the ninja.
Lex Luger (c) vs. Sting – World Heavyweight Championship match
Background: At Clash of the Champions XVII, then-WCW United States Heavyweight Champion Sting received the last of a series of three packages containing wrestlers who attacked him – this last being his former friend, WCW World Heavyweight Champion Lex Luger who reinjured Sting’s knee so badly that it contributed heavily to his title loss to Rick Rude later that night. Sting recuperated from the injury and at Starrcade, he last eliminated Luger to win the Battlebowl battle royal. At Clash of the Champions XVIII, the new Executive Vice President of WCW, Kip Allan Frey announced that Luger would defend the title against Sting in the main event at SuperBrawl II.
Previous PPV matches: These two men have only wrestled on PPV once before, it was Starrcade 89 and Lex Luger won it.
SuperBrawl Record: Both Lex Luger and Sting are 1-0.
Match: There’s a long face off between the two former friends before they get into it. It’s a back and forth start to the match. Sting hits a Stinger splash early but Luger explodes back with a clothesline out of the corner. Sting counters a torture rack with a suplex and then applies a rack of his own. Sting attempts a scorpion deathlock but Luger quickly gets to the ropes. Luger takes control, dictating a slow pace. With the referee trying to break them up Lex hits a low blow. Luger hits a piledriver and lays in some elbows but can’t keep his challenger down. Sting fired up in what is a back and forth match. Harley Race attempts a piledriver on Sting outside the ring but Sting counters it with a back body drop. Sting then heads to the top and hits Luger with a high cross body for the three!
Result: Sting wins the World Heavyweight Championship by pinfall.
Review: This was a good match. I feel like they’ve both had better matches but this wasn’t awful. It was back and forth with both men getting their stuff in. It felt a little short. Sting wins the match and the World Heavyweight Championship for a second time. I think a title change was the right move and hopefully Sting gets more of a run with it this time.
Rating: 6.75/10
This felt like a really good show. There were no bad matches on the card and some of the matches were very very good. The opener between Brian Pillman and Jushin Thunder Liger was a hell of a match and I’m sure if I had reviewed the match at the time it would have scored higher. Dave Meltzer gave it 5 stars, I gave it a 7.5. Still, a good match and a title change to kick off the show. Marcus Alexander Bagwell then got a huge victory against Terry Taylor. Taylor got his heat back after the match so this rivalry will rage on. Ron Simmons bean Cactus Jack in one of the more random matches of the night. Abdullah The Butcher would emerge after the match and join in the attack on Simmons before Junkyard Dog made the save, returning to the company. Z-Man and Van Hammer beat Richard Morton and Vinnie Vegas and I don’t know what else to say about this. Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes beat Larry Zbyszko and Steve Austin to get their revenge on Larry for injuring Windham. This was a good match, the psychology was good too.
Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton beat The Steiner Brothers by disqualification in a good match. I don’t know about the finish though. Powder to the eyes and a blinded Rick Steiner takes out the referee? It’s poor. But it was a good match none the less and we’ll see more matches down the line between these two teams I’m sure. Rick Rude beat Ricky Steamboat to retain the United States Championship in a really good match. I called the finish with Paul E. Dangerously being dressed as the ninja but still, a great match between two of the best. Then in the main event Sting defeated Lex Luger to become a two time World Heavyweight Champion. I hope Sting gets more a reign this time.
Definitely worth going to check out this show, in my opinion the best WCW show for four years. Pillman and Liger had a classic, Rude and Steamboat had a great match and worth watching Sting and Luger too.
