Tonight will be Judgment Day for the likes of John Cena, Edge and Vince McMahon as they are set to defend their world titles against much bigger opponents. With only three weeks to build to this show some of the rivalries have been short. Shawn Michaels, Edge and Randy Orton were all considered number one contender to John Cena’s WWE Championship but all three men were taken out my a mystery assailant. When he revealed himself, it was none other than The Great Khali. Vince McMahon made the match between Cena and The Great Khali who is now flanked by translator Ranjin Singh. Khali has left Cena laying on a couple of occasions and he’ll be the biggest challenger yet to John’s title. Khali even stole Cena’s title and will bring it to the ring tonight.

The whole landscape has changed over on Smackdown since The Undertaker retained his World Heavyweight title against Batista at Backlash. It started on Raw with Edge challenging Mr Kennedy to a match for his Money In The Bank briefcase. Kennedy accepted the challenge but Edge would attack Kennedy before the match and then quickly beat him for the briefcase. Undertaker would battle Batista on Smackdown four days later in a cage match, a match that Undertaker and Batista would draw (again) but as a result Undertaker would retain his title. After the match Mark Henry would emerge and attack The Undertaker leaving him laying which was the perfect opportunity for Edge to come out, cash in his Money In The bank contract and win the World Heavyweight title. Tonight Edge defends his World Heavyweight title against number one contender Batista.

Over on ECW, Bobby Lashley demanded a rematch for the ECW Championship and Vince McMahon was kind enough to give Bobby his rematch. However it will be a rematch from Backlash with Lashley taking on Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon and Umaga. Since the match was announced Vince McMahon has continued to make life miserable for Bobby Lashley, putting him in handicap matches against the likes of The New Breed on ECW. Also on ECW, The New Breed thought they had recruited CM Punk to their group. It turns out that CM Punk was having some fun of his own though and after costing Elijah Burke a match against Rob Van Dam, Punk would reveal his own motives. As a result, a match has been made between the two for tonight.

MVP has earned himself another shot at Chris Benoit’s United States Championship after he defeated Kane with a lot of help from Williams Regal and Dave Taylor. This could be the last chance MVP gets at Benoit and his title and the stakes are going to be high as the two meet in a 2 out of 3 falls match. Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch will be getting a other shot at the World Tag Team Championships held by The Hardy Boys. Cade and Murdoch have shown nothing but respect for the tag team championships, even going as far as to save them from beat-downs from the likes of The World’s Greatest Tag Team, Johnny Nitro and Kenny Dykstra. Everybody seems to be waiting for the inevitable heel turn from Cade and Murdoch but so far it hasn’t happened!

There will be two other matches from the Raw brand tonight. Randy Orton has challenged Shawn Michaels to a match but Michaels has been decimated by The Great Khali in recent weeks so is Orton taking advantage? Those two will meet but one thing is for sure and that is Shawn Michaels is not at 100%. The other match will be Carlito vs. Ric Flair as Carlito turned on his mentor as well as his girlfriend Torrie Wilson. Carlito has left Flair lying on more than one occasion and tonight the former tag team partners go one on one.

In a dark match prior to the event Kane (who is the man on the poster for this event) defeated William Regal.

A video package kicks us off, starting with hyping up the Edge/Batista match, then the Bobby Lashley vs. Vince, Shane and Umaga match for the ECW title and then John Cena vs. The Great Khali.

Jim Ross welcomes us to St Louis for Judgment Day 2007. He’s joined by Jerry “The King” Lawler at the Raw announce desk. Joey Styles and Tazz represent ECW and Michael Cole and John “Bradshaw” Layfield are there for Smackdown.

Ric Flair vs. Carlito

This is the second PPV meeting between these two men. In the previous meeting, Ric Flair beat Carlito for the Intercontinental title at Unforgiven 2005. Ric Flair is 0-1 at Judgment Day PPV’s having lost in a handicap match to Stone Cold Steve Austin back in 2002 whilst Carlito is 1-0 after he beat The Big Show in 2005. Carlito throws his apple at Flair as he gets into the ring. Carlito is in black short as opposed to his usual colourful numbers. Flair hits Carlito with some chops in the early going and then some lefts and rights. The Nature Boy hits a back body drop sending Carlito sprawling to the outside. Carlito drops Flair’s arm on the top rope and then gets back into the ring to lay in some boots. Carlito applies a hammerlock as he starts to work the left arm. Ric Flair has been WWE, Intercontinental and Tag Team Champion. Carlito throws Ric Flair into the turnbuckle shoulder first and follows it up with some left hands. Carlito then throws Flair back into the turnbuckle for the first near fall of the night.

Carlito continues to take the advantage by swinging Flair’s arm into the ringpost and then dropkicks Flairs arm into the ringpost. Carlito gets a one count on the pinfall and then goes back to work on the arm, applying a keylock. Flair gets out of the submission hold and slugs it out with Carlito but Carlito keeps the advantage. He hits a snapmare and applies another hammerlock which Flair gets out of but Carlito knocks Ric down with a clothesline. Carlito applies a wristlock which Flair gets out of with an arm drag but Carlito dropkicks him right back down to the mat for a near fall. Flair starts a comeback with chops, knocking Carlito down to the mat repeatedly. Carlito reverses an Irish whip and hits a back body drop for a two count. Carlito then applies an armbar which he decides to break before applying a wristlock. Flair gets out of it with an arm drag and then hits another chop which has been his only attack during this match. Flair hits a snapmare and then a boot to the face.

Flair hits a reverse elbow and then another chop before hitting a back body drop on his younger opponent. Flair then hits a chop block and then chops and right hands in the corner. Carlito pokes Flair in the eye which is ironic and then attempts the backstabber but Flair hangs onto the ropes. Flair stomps away at the knee’s Carlito before hitting a kneedrop. Flair then locks on the figure four! Carlito is in the middle of the ring and has to tap out! Ric Flair beats Carlito tonight! Not a great way to kick off the show but decent enough psychology from Carlito. Flair hit a couple of chops and locked on the figure four to win but he is a legend in Missouri and the crowd are happy.

Todd Grisham is backstage with Shawn Michaels. We’re shown some footage from Raw with Randy Orton punting Shawn Michaels head after Michaels had beaten Edge. Michaels says that everyone thinks that Randy Orton has the upper hand but before he can continue, Randy appears and throws Michaels in the set. Help is called as Michaels groans on the floor.

There’s a video package showing Vince McMahon winning the ECW title from Bobby Lashley at Backlash.

Vince McMahon (c), Shane McMahon & Umaga vs. Bobby Lashley – ECW Championship match

This is a return match from Backlash where Vince McMahon defeated Bobby Lashley for the ECW title. Shane McMahon is 1-0 at Judgment Day PPV’s, he beat Big Show in 2000. Bobby Lashley is 0-1 following his defeated to Booker T last year. Vince McMahon and Umaga make their Judgment Day debuts tonight. Bobby Lashley starts the match taking on everyone but the numbers become too much until he fights Shane off. Lashley wants Vince but Shane keeps hitting Lashley with jabs. Lashley belly to belly suplexes Shane and then lays into him in the corner. Lashley side-steps Umaga who squashes Shane in the corner. Lashley then hits Umaga with a spear before hitting a running powerslam on Shane for the three! Bobby Lashley pins Shane and becomes ECW Champion! That was a quick match. Barely even a match to be honest. After the match Umaga attacks Lashley from behind and lays him out with the Samoan spike. Vince McMahon then grabs the ECW title and the microphone and tells Lashley that to win the ECW World Heavyweight title, Lashley had to beat him! So Bobby wins the match but Vince is still the ECW Champion!

CM Punk vs. Elijah Burke

It’s a first PPV match between these two men who make their Judgment Day debuts tonight. Punk has heavily taped up ribs. Punk starts the match with a waistlock which Burke reverses and lays a couple of right hands into Punks ribs. Punk goes to the headlock which Burke gets out of but Punk immediately lays in some kicks. Burke fights back with some lefts and rights and then stomps Punk into the mat. Punk reverses an Irish whip, hits a snapmare and then a kick to the spine of Burke before powerslamming him in the middle of the ring for a one count. CM Punk applies a chinlock and then a front facelock which Burke gets out of. Burke hits some kicks and right hands to the injured ribs of Punk before booting him. Punk fights back with some kicks of his own and then an t-bone suplex for a near fall. Punk hits some right hands and kicks and then a clothesline in the corner.

CM Punk hits a delayed vertical suplex for a near fall and then applies a sleeper. Burke gets out of the sleeper and lays in some lefts and rights. Punk reverses an Irish whip and there’s a bit of a miscommunication. Punk hits a springboard cross body for a near fall. Burke hits a shoulder charge in the corner and then runs into a boot. Punk attempts a splash in the corner but Burke just tosses him over the top rope. A bit sloppy there. Burke tries to suplex Punk back into the ring but Punk fights him off and then rolls Elijah up for a near fall. Punk then applies a headlock which Elijah gets out of and the two men try for hiptosses which results in Punk getting Burke up on his shoulder for the GTS. Burke manages to get down onto the apron but Punk dropkicks him off the apron to the floor below. Punk then flies to the outside with a suicide dive. Back in the ring and Punk gets a near fall. This is both mens first ever singles match on a pay per view. Punk goes up top but Burke pulls him back down.

I like both of these men, neither would be out of place in the Intercontinental division on Raw. Burke suplexes CM Punk onto the top rope and then boots him in the ribs. Burke gets a near fall and then applies a chinlock. Burke hits a suplex and then a side suplex for a near fall and then applies a chinlock with a body scissors. Punk gets out of it and lays in some lefts and rights. There’s another miscommunication as Punk attempts an Irish whip. Punk tries for a suplex but Burke rolls him up for a near fall. Punk then runs into Burke’s boot and burke climbs to the top but Punk joins him up there and hits a superplex. Both men get to their feet and slug it out until Punk takes Burke down with an enzeguri for a near fall. Punk then hits his running knee lift in the corner and attempts a bulldog but Burke shoves him into the opposite corner.

Burke attempts the Elijah express but Punk gets out of the way and sets burke up for the Go To Sleep. Burke gets down and hits the Elijah express but Punk kicks out at 2! Elijah sets Punk up on the top rope and hits him with the Elijah express! Punk gets stuck in a tree of woe so it takes Burke a while to pin Punk and when he does Punk gets his hand to the bottom rope. Elijah attempts the Elijah experience again but Punk nips down and hits the GTS! Punk hooks the leg and gets the 3! CM Punk beats Elijah Burke tonight! A lot of this match was boring but the ending made up for it. A good win for CM Punk.

Kristal is backstage with Edge. Edge says that he’s had the greatest 2 weeks of any superstar in his industry. Edge says that the Rated R era has begun.

Shawn Michaels vs. Randy Orton

This is the second PPV match between these two men. Randy Orton defeated Shawn Michaels at Unforgiven 2003. Both men are actually making their Judgment Day debuts tonight. Randy is out first and is expected to be announced the winner by forfeit but Michaels music hits and Shawn comes out looking worse for wear. The referee calls for the bell and Orton knocks Michaels down with a right hand. Randy then hits a middle-rope DDT and hooks the leg but Shawn kicks out at 2! Randy looking to be the first heel to win tonight. Orton stomps on Michaels’ head and then attempts an RKO but instead just drops HBK. Orton backs off but then picks Michaels up and pops him on the top turnbuckle. Orton looks for a top rope RKO but Michaels rakes the eyes! Michaels shoves Orton off the top and then hits an elbow drop! Michaels motions for sweet chin music but just collapses in the middle of the ring. Orton is looking for his first PPV victory of 2007 on the 4th of asking and he gets it. The referee calls for the bell, claiming that Michaels can’t continue. This wasn’t really a match but it will go down asa victory for Randy Orton. After the bell Orton takes Michaels down with an RKO. Michaels’w wife Rebecca gets in the ring and see’s to her husband. Michaels is carried off on a stretcher.

Todd Grisham is backstage with The Great Khali and his new manager Ranjin Singh. Khali speaks in Indian and Singh translates it to Khali telling Cena that if he wants some then he can come get some.

The Hardy Boys (Matt & Jeff) (c) vs. Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch – World Tag Team Championship match

This is a rematch from Backlash where The Hardy Boys beat Cade and Murdoch. Michael Cole and JBL are commentating on this match which is weird considering this is a Raw match. Matt and Jeff have a 0-2 record at Judgment Day PPV’s whilst Cade and Murdoch make their debut at this event tonight. This is Jeff Hardy’s 10th consecutive PPV which is some going. Matt Hardy starts the match against Lance Cade. Cade hits a headlock takedown which Matt counters with a head-scissors. Matt hits an arm drag and Cade backs off into his own corner. Cade offers a handshake and Matt Hardy sort of takes it. Cade applies a hammerlock which Matt counters. Cade counters again and Matt Hardy counters. Cade gets to the ropes. Nobody has wrestled as many PPV matches without main eventing as Matt and Jeff Hardy. Lance Cade hits a hiptoss for a one count and then tags in Trevor Murdoch. Murdoch works the left arm on Matt Hardy before tagging back out to Cade.

Matt tags in his brother Jeff who comes in with a dropkick. Cade tags in Murdoch who is happy to give the clean break. The two men exchange hammerlocks and Murdoch hits a hiptoss. The two men shake hands and Jeff applies a headlock. Murdoch gets out of it but Hardy hits a couple of arm drags and then poetry in motion as Matt Hardy tags in. Matt works the left arm of Trevor Murdoch and then hits a reverse elbow. Matt heads to the middle rope and hits a standing elbow for a near fall. Cade tags himself in and takes Matt down with a big clothesline for a near fall. Cade hits a dropkick for another near fall. Quick tags between the challengers now with Trevor Murdoch not staying in for long. The challengers hit a double Irish whip on Matt Hardy. Matt manages to tag in Jeff who hits a flying forearm on Murdoch. Jeff lays into Murdoch with right hands and then a swinging dropkick for a near fall. Jeff hits whisper in the wind and Cade breaks up the cover.

Matt clears the ring of Cade and Jeff disposes of Murdoch. Cade then looks like he’s heading to the back and Murdoch joins him. Murdoch gets back into the ring and gives the champions the thumbs up. Murdoch hits an Irish whip but Jeff back body drops him out of the ring. Jeff then dives to the outside but Murdoch gets out of the way. Back in the ring and Murdoch tags in Lance Cade. Cade hits a running shoulder tackle on Jeff and then hits a knee drop. Cade tags Murdoch who hits a legdrop for a near fall. Murdoch then applies a sleeper but Jeff fights his way out of it and hits a jawbreaker but Murdoch blocks it and kicks Hardy in the face for a near fall. Lance Cade tags in and Murdoch whips Cade into Jeff Hardy. Cade gets a near fall and tags Murdoch back in. Murdoch hits a sunset flip powerbomb but Matt Hardy breaks up the pinfall attempt. Jeff hits the jawbreaker on Murdoch, Murdoch tags in Cade and Jeff tags Matt! Matt knocks Cade down with right hands and a reverse elbow. Matt then back body drops Murdoch and takes both men down with a combination bulldog/clothesline.

Matt hits side affect on Cade for a two count as Murdoch breaks up the count. Matt disposes of Murdoch but runs into a powerbomb from Lance Cade. Cade gets a near fall and Matt hits him with the twist of fate. Matt tags in Jeff who goes up top and hits the swanton bomb! That’s enough for the three, Matt and Jeff Hardy retain their world tag team championships! After the match Cade and Murdoch shake the hands of the champions.

Rating: 6/10

There’s a poll with all five of the title challengers tonight and who is most likely to walk out with a title. Batista won the poll with 39%. Cade and Murdoch had 1%.

Edge (c) vs. Batista – World Heavyweight Championship match

This is a first time PPV meeting between these two men. Edge is 2-1 at Judgment Day events whilst Batista makes his Judgment Day debut tonight. Batista uses his power in the early going to force Edge across the ring. Batista plays with Edge in the early going, forcing him to the top turnbuckle and backing off. Edge executes a headlock but Batista forces him off and then to the mat. Batista smashes edge into the top turnbuckle and then hits him with lefts and rights and then an elbow for a one count. Edge rakes the eyes but Batista throws him out of the ring and there are a few boo’s. Edge throws Batista knee-first into the ring steps. Back in the ring and Edge hits a dropkick to the knees of Batista. Edge then hits a chopblock and looks to apply a leglock but Batista kicks him into the corner. Batista then tries for a shoulder charge but Edge side-steps it and Batista goes shoulder first into the ringpost. Batista hits some right hands but Edge kicks him in his arm before locking on an armbar. Edge turns it into a wristlock and then a hammerlock. Edge gets out of it with an armdrag and then hits an Irish whip but runs into Edge’s boot.

Batista forces Edge into the corner and hits him with shoulder charges. Batista pops Edge on the top but Edge forces the challenger down to the mat. Edge then comes off the middle rope but Batista catches him with a clothesline. This is the first Judgment Day in four years to not feature John “Bradshaw” Layfield in the World Heavyweight title match. Batista hits a powerslam for a near fall. Edge hits a big boot but Batista takes him down with a sidewalk slam for a near fall. So far I think Edge is bringing the best out of Batista. Edge hits an inverted powerbomb for a near fall. Edge looks to hit a spear but Batista hits a spear of his own for a near fall. Batista hits a running powerslam and motions for the Batista bomb but Edge gets out of it only to walk into a spinebuster. Edge then rolls Batista up out of nowhere and gets the three! Edge wins after taking advantage of the injured leg. I wasn’t a big fan of the finish to this match but the match was decent overall.

Chris Benoit (c) vs. M.V.P. – 2 out of 3 falls match for the United States title

This is the third match these two men have had on PPV with Benoit beating MVP at Wrestlemania and Backlash. Chris Benoit is 3-2 at Judgment Day PPV’s whilst MVP makes his Judgment Day debut tonight. The two men lock up and roll to the outside before diving back in the ring, going toe to toe and then slapping each other in the face. Benoit attempts the crossface early but MVP gets to the ropes. Benoit hits two armdrags and a drop toe hold before trying to lock the crippler crossface on again but MVP gets to the bottom rope. MVP hits a headlock takedown which Benoit gets out of with a side suplex. The two men exchange right hands and kicks until MVP takes down Benoit and Benoit turns it into an armbar. Benoit hits some chops but MVP takes him down with a blow to the knees for a near fall. This is a 5th PPV title defence for Chris Benoit, there have only been 8 title reigns before this that have had 5 or more successful PPV defences. MVP works on the left leg of Chris Benoit but Benoit fires back with some chops.

Chris Benoit is looking to be the first man to have won at the 2006 Judgment Day PPV and this one. Benoit hits two consecutive German suplexes but his knee gives out before he can hit a third. Benoit then locks the crippler crossface on! MVP looks to tap out but instead gets his foot to the bottom rope. MVP then goes back to work on the left leg and then misses with a running boot in the corner. Benoit then takes MVP down and locks on the sharpshooter! MVP quickly crawls to the bottom rope. Benoit hits a dropkick but MVP is always the first up to his feet. Benoit hits an enzeguri but MVP goes right back to work on the left leg of the champion. MVP goes up to the middle rope but Benoit tries for an electric chair drop. Benoits leg gives in and MVP hits him with the playmaker for the three! MVP wins the first fall. 

The match continues and Benoit hits some chops. MVP slides out of the ring and smashes Benoits leg into the apron. MVP gets a near fall. Chris Benoit has definitely elevated the United States title. Benoit kicks MVP in the face but MVP kicks Benoit in the leg. MVP ties Benoit up in a tree of woe and then hits a running boot to the knee of the champion. MVP gets a one count on the pinfall and then applies a leglock. MVP then changes that into a modified half crab but Benoit gets to the bottom rope. MVP attempts the playmaker again but Benoit takes MVP down and tries to lock on the crippler crossface! MVP elbows his way out of it and rolls Benoit up for a near fall. MVP takes another shot at the knee and then rolls Benoit up, this time getting the three! MVP wins the match in two straight falls and becomes the new United States Champion! Good match between these two.

John Cena (c) vs. The Great Khali – WWE Championship match

This is a first PPV meeting between these two men. John Cena is 3-0 at Judgment Day events whilst The Great Khali is 1-0. Khali looks to be the only man to have won at last years Judgment Day PPV and this years whilst this could be the 8th title reign to make it through 5 successful PPV defences should Cena win. Cena hits some lefts and rights in the early going but Khali knocks him down with a huge clothesline. Khali not wearing his wrist tape today which would make him look even more menacing. Khali hits a big right hand sending Cena to the outside. Khali throws Cena into the ring steps and then back into the ring. Khali gets a near fall and then hits a powerslam and a legdrop for another near fall. Khali throws Cena hard into the corner and then knocks Cena down with a clothesline but this time misses with the legdrop. Cena hits a modified bulldog for a near fall and then lays in some right hands before running into Khali’s boot. That sends Cena out of the ring and Khali follows and smashes him into the announce table.

Khali smashes Cena into the announce table again and then back into the ring. Khali applies a nerve hold but Cena manages to get out of it and hit a shoulder charge which ties Khali up in the ropes. This is the old Andre The giant spot and Cena lays into him with right hands. Khali unties himself and hits a big boot before motioning for the giant chop. Cena blocks the chop but Khali tosses him back out of the ring. Cena dropkicks the ring steps into the knees of his challenger. Khali crawls back into the ring where Cena hits him with a legdrop. Cena then locks on the STFU and Khali taps out! Khali’s leg looked like it was under the ropes but none the less it is a win for John Cena who retains his WWE title! This match wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be actually.

Rating: 4.75/10

And that was Judgment Day 2007. It felt like a pretty decent show overall. Through having these shows as tri-branded it means only the best talent is used and the overall quality of the show is better. The show started ok, quite slowly, with Ric Flair and Carlito. I would have been boring and kicked off the show with The Hardy Boyz as per usual as it’s always an exciting way to kick off the show. This match was ok though, pretty average and it gave Ric Flair a victory which surprised me a bit. I’d have probably used Flair to elevate Carlito here. The ECW title match was really short and had Bobby Lashley pin Shane McMahon in just over a minute. The twist came that Lashley had to pin Vince McMahon to win the title so Bobby wins the match but not the ECW Championship. I didn’t mind this but after all the build I expected them to have a lot more PPV time. This feud will continue I reckon!

CM Punk and Elijah Burke nearly went 17 minutes which was the longest match of the night. And as the match had not been advertised on Raw or Smackdown it would have come as a surprise to many. CM Punk won which was the right result but both men came out looking good. I could see both in the Raw Intercontinental title picture. I was a bit bored by the match to tell you the truth and although it wasn’t terrible I do think it went on too long. Shawn Michaels and Randy Orton didn’t really have a match, it was more of just a beating from Orton to Michaels. Orton wins the match and I think Michaels will have some time on the shelf. He’s probably got bored because his mate Triple H isn’t about. Orton comes out of this brief feud looking very good. A well deserved push, I hope it goes on to Summerslam where he’d be a great opponent for Cena, a lot of history between them.

The Hardy Boys had a good match with Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch, retaining their titles. There were two things I was expecting from this match and neither happened. I expected Cade and Murdoch to turn heel and I expected the Hardy Boys to drop their belt so Matt Hardy can go back to Smackdown. Cade and Murdoch shook The Hardy Boys hands after the match and this feud is really intriguing. Edge beat Batista cleanly due to Batista and the selling of his leg. I think this feud will continue and it is a great main event feud. The Smackdown main event is a little thin at the moment and they don’t have many other options so I can see this one running for a little longer. Decent enough match between the two.

MVP beat Chris Benoit in two straight falls to become the United States Champion. I was surprised MVP won in two straight falls. MVP has come a long way and he’s technically much better in the ring, mainly due to working with Chris Benoit for the past few months. I like MVP as US Champion, there are no problems there. I’m not sure where it leaves Chris Benoit, hopefully turning heel to freshen him up a bit. Then in the main event John Cena made The Great Khali tap out. Was that a good move? It kills Khali’s momentum and makes him look like fodder. But I can’t help but this Khali’s leg being under the rope was relevant. You could see Khali trying to find the rope and make sure his foot was underneath it so it must be relevant. It is going to take a lot for someone to have a 6/10+ match with The Great Khali and to be honest, I’m just glad he did not win the WWE title tonight.
