CM Punk defends the WWE Championship against a man he chose to be his number one contender, John Cena. AJ Lee had to agree with CM Punk’s chosen opponent and she did, so it’ll be Cena and Punk tonight. Punk has tried to make Cena agree to saying that Punk is the best in the world but Cena refuses. Punk has even had a rivalry on the side with Jerry “The King” Lawler, beating The King in a steel cage match. Punk tried to take Lawler out after the match but Cena made the save. The World Heavyweight Championship will be defended when Sheamus puts the title on the line against Alberto Del Rio again. At Summerslam Del Rio’s foot was on the bottom rope when Sheamus pinned him so Del Rio demanded and received a rematch after beating Randy Orton. Since then Del Rio has managed to get the brogue kick banned with help from David Otunga, after Sheamus “broke the neck” of Ricardo Rodriguez. So Sheamus will not be able to use his finisher tonight.
The WWE Tag Team Championships will be on the line as Kofi Kingston and R-Truth defend against the team of Kane and Daniel Bryan. Originally The Prime Time Players were the number one contenders but after Kane and Daniel Bryan had been to anger management together, their consultant Dr Shelby thought it would be a good idea for the two to team up. AJ then made a match between The Prime Time Players and Kane and Daniel Bryan with the winners getting a tag team title shot tonight. Kane and Daniel Bryan won after Kane chokeslammed Daniel Bryan on to Darren Young for the win. The only non-title match scheduled for tonight is between Dolph Ziggler and Randy Orton. Orton hit Ziggler with an RKO a few weeks ago as Dolph was about to cash in his Money In The Bank contract. Randy has beaten Dolph in the build up to this show and Ziggler demanded a rematch. These two go one on one tonight.
The Intercontinental Championship will be defended in a fatal four way match. The rivalry between Cody Rhodes and Sin Cara whereby Rhodes has been obsessed with unmasking Sin Cara has come to involved not only Rey Mysterio but also The Miz. Cody Rhodes attacked The Miz after a match and all three challengers have made it known that they want a shot at the Intercontinental Championship and tonight they get it. The United States Championship will be on the line with Cesaro defending against the winner of a battle royal to take place on the pre-show. Layla defends the WWE Divas Championship against Kaitlyn who herself won a battle royal to become number one contender. Layla and Kaitlyn are both friends but will this match put pressure on their friendship? Kaitlyn gets her first title opportunity tonight.
On the pre-show Zack Ryder won a battle royal to win an opportunity at Cesaro and his United States Championship tonight.
The show kicks off with a video package, first focusing on the titles and how important they are. It then focuses on how being WWE Champion isn’t enough for CM Punk. It’s all about his match with John Cena tonight.
Michael Cole welcomes us to The Garden in Boston. Cole updates us on Jerry “The King” Lawler who had a heart attack on Raw last week. He’s doing well and goes home next week. Lawler’s replacement on commentary is then announced and it’s John “Bradshaw” Layfield!

The United States Champion was actually defended in a fatal four way match last year with Dolph Ziggler defending against Alex Riley, John Morrison and Jack Swagger. John Cena is the only man to have wrestled on all six Night Of Champions events. This is CM Punk’s first official main event on PPV since December but he has been WWE Champion ever since. And that was Night Of Champions 2012. The one night a year where every title is defended. It felt like a good show, most of the matches delivered and only a couple were sub-par. There was nothing terrible on the show. The United States Championship match was a fun way to kick off the show. The Miz won after being blindfolded by Sin Cara and hitting his finisher on Cody Rhodes. This makes me think that a feud between The Miz and Cody Rhodes may continue which I actually think could be good value. One of them may need to turn face though. The Miz is a good Intercontinental Champion though and may his reign continue. Daniel Bryan and Kane then won the WWE Tag Team Championships from Kofi Kingston and R-Truth. I like this title change, Kane and Daniel Bryan are two of the most entertaining guys on the roster currently and their storyline has been brilliant. Kofi and R-Truth had a good run but it didn’t feel like it was going anywhere so I welcome the title change. Good match between these two teams, a good story with the champions.
Antonio Cesaro beat Zack Ryder to retain the United States Championship. I expected this and it was a decent title defence for Cesaro. I like him and look forward to him battling some of the bigger stars as this felt a little like a job match. It wasn’t a great match, Cesaro’s style is slow but I think he could have some really good matches with the likes of Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler and Daniel Bryan. Speaking of Dolph, he lost to Randy Orton in a good match. This match had some great psychology and told a good story. Ziggler is getting a lot of big matches at the moment which should get him ready for the Money In The Bank cash-in but he is losing all of these matches. This will probably be the end of this rivalry.
Eve defeated Layla to become the new WWE Divas Champion. This feels like the crescendo of her story. She claims to have turned over a new leaf but you can tell she’s still a heel and she was undoubtedly the person to have taken out Kaitlyn to get herself into the title picture and it all worked. It has been a well executed angle and ends with Eve holding the title. She’s been much improved over the last year or so and I look forward to her title reign. Sheamus beats Alberto Del Rio again in a match that surely ends this rivalry. Again there was a good story to this match with the brogue kick being banned and then reinstated. There aren’t a lot of challengers to Sheamus’ title at the moment which makes me think a Money In The Bank bash-in might not be far away. This was a good match tonight though, Sheamus is having a good reign as World Heavyweight Champion.
CM Punk and John Cena then wrestled to a draw. We haven’t had a draw in a PPV main event in a long time, the crowd are never happy about that result. This suggests that the feud between the two men will continue and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the two men inside Hell In A Cell next month. A great match between these two though in a match with a real main event feel.
