Tonight is the one night of the year when WWE goes extreme. It’s the first pay per view since Wrestlemania 30 and there is lots of backlash from the event. Daniel Bryan has a ready made opponent in his former tag team partner Kane. Kane has resurrected “The Demon” which means he’s wearing his mask again. Kane has already brutally attacked Daniel Bryan, tombstoning him on the outside and then hitting the WWE World Heavyweight Champion with a tombstone on the ring steps. Kane has also targeting Daniel Bryan’s wife Brie Bella and tried dragging her under the ring only to be stopped by Bryan. Tonight Kane gets his shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in an Extreme Rules match.

Another huge match tonight will see The Shield go up against Evolution. Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose have severed their ties with Triple H after getting fed up with being hired guns and wanting to do things by themselves. Triple H re-formed Evolution with Randy Orton and Batista and the three of them have beaten down The Shield. Triple H has also put The Shield in 11 against 3 handicap matches just to weaken them up. Ric Flair even returned to Raw and although it looked like he was re-joining Evolution, he actually gave his blessing to The Shield.

Another big match for tonight is a Wrestlemania rematch between John Cena and Bray Wyatt. Cena beat Bray Wyatt at Wrestlemania but Wyatt hasn’t finished with the leader of the Cenation. Cena challenged Wyatt to a match at Extreme Rules that Luke Harper and Erick Rowan couldn’t get involved with, a steel cage match. Wyatt accepted the challenge and has since haunted Cena with a choir of children singing “he’s got the whole world in his hands”. Also tonight will see the dominant Rusev in a handicap match against two man he has had the better of in the past few weeks, R-Truth and Xavier Woods.

The night after Wrestlemania, AJ Lee came out and claimed that she has gone through the whole Divas division and there is nobody else left for her to beat. Paige, a former NXT Women’s Champion would come out and congratulate AJ Lee. AJ took offence to the interruption and challenged Paige to a match, putting the Divas Championship on the line. Paige went on to win the match and the Divas Championship. Tonight Paige will be putting the Divas Championship on the line against AJ Lee’s bodyguard Tamina.

WWE on Twitter: "TONIGHT: It's Round 1 of the No. 1 Contender's ...

A tournament would decide a number one contender to the Intercontinental Championship. The brackets are above. In the first round Cesaro would beat Mark Henry, Rob Van Dam beat Alberto Del Rio, Sheamus beat Jack Swagger and Bad News Barrett beat Dolph Ziggler. In the semi finals Rob Van Dam beat Cesaro by count-out and Bad News Barrett defeated Dolph Ziggler. In the finals Bad News Barrett beat Rob Van Dam to become the number one contender. Bad News Barrett takes on Big E tonight. Also tonight will be a triple threat match between Cesaro, Rob Van Dam and Jack Swagger. Cesaro has taken on Paul Heyman as his manager, something Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter have taken offence to. Rob Van Dam has got caught up in it all due to his history with Paul Heyman.

On the kick-off show El Torito defeated Hornswoggle in a Wee-LC match.

The show kicks off with a video package focusing on the match between The Shield and Evolution and then moving to Daniel Bryan and Kane and then John Cena and Bray Wyatt.

Michael Cole welcomes us to the Izod Center.

This is a first time three way match between these three men. Jack Swagger is 2-2 at Extreme Rules events whilst Rob Van Dam and Cesaro make their Extreme Rules debut tonight. Jack Swagger has Zeb Colter in his corner whilst Cesaro is flanked by Paul Heyman. Jack Swagger has never main evented a pay per view and only Matt Hardy has wrestled more PPV and not main evented. Jack Swagger hits Rob Van Dam with knees in the corner until Van Dam back body drops Swagger out of the ring. Cesaro then back drops Van Dam out of the ring but RVD reverses and hits a sunset flip powerbomb. Swagger then drops Van Dam with a clothesline on the outside. Swagger hits a big German suplex on Van Dam for the first near fall of the night. Swagger slams Van Dam and hits him with a Swagger bomb for a near fall. Cesaro then takes down Swagger and swings him round and round until Van Dam hits Cesaro with a spinning heel kick for a two count. Swagger takes down Van Dam and looks on the patriot lock but Cesaro takes out Swagger with an uppercut to break the hold. Cesaro uppercuts Swagger who was attempting to go to the top. Cesaro then suplexes Swagger from the apron and into the ring. Van Dam hits a five star frog splash on Swagger which is enough for the three! Jack Swagger has been eliminated.

There was a bit of confusion there. Cesaro goes right to work on Van Dam, hitting him with a gut-wrench suplex. Cesaro rolls through and hits a second gut-wrench and then a third for a near fall. Cesaro hits a German suplex on Van Dam for a two count. Van Dam rolls to the outside and Cesaro follows, hitting a double axe handle from the second rope. Back in the ring and RVD hits rolling thunder for a two count. Van Dam then hits a split-legged moonsault for a two count. Van Dam pulls a trash can from out of the ring but Cesaro baseball slides it into him. Cesaro rolls Van Dam back into the ring and throws the trash can int too. Van Dam rolls Cesaro up for a near fall and then hits a Van-Daminator with the trash can!

Rob Van Dam lays the trash can on top of Cesaro and then attempts a five star frog splash but Cesaro rolls out of the way and Van Dam hits the trash can. Cesaro then hits the neutraliser on the trash can and that’s all she wrote! Cesaro wins the triple threat to kick off the show!

R-Truth & Xavier Woods vs. Rusev – 2 on 1 handicap match

R-Truth is 0-1 at Extreme Rules events whilst Xavier Woods and Rusev make their debut at the event tonight and it’s also a first non Royal Rumble/Battle Royal PPV match for Woods and Rusev who both looks for their first PPV victory.  Lana is out first to introduce Rusev and she dedicates the match to Vladimir Putin. Xavier Woods and R-Truth storm the ring but Rusev kicks both men on their way into the ring. Rusev then pulls up the apron and throws Xavier Woods into the steel underneath. Rusev rolls Truth into the ring and hits Xavier Woods with a belly to belly on the outside. Rusev gets into the ring and the bell if officially rung. Rusev hits Truth with right hands and kicks and then a hard Irish whip.

Rusev hits a big splash in the corner on R-Truth and then tries for a second but Truth gets his boots up. Truth hits some right hands a dropkick before hitting a splash of his own in the corner. Truth hits a missile dropkick to knock Rusev down and then a spinning forearm. Truth then hits the axe kick but Rusev kicks out at 2. Doctors are seeing to Xavier Woods on the outside as Rusev catches Truth. Truth counters a fallaway slam but Rusev hits a spinning heel kick. Lana calls for Rusev to crush and Rusev hits a big side slam. Rusev then locks on The Accolade (Boston crab) and R-Truth taps out. It’s a win for Rusev in handicap action tonight. A quick match but not a bad one!

Big E (c) vs. Bad News Barrett – Intercontinental Championship match

This is a first time PPV match between these two men. Barrett is 0-1 at Extreme Rules PPV’s whilst Big E makes his debut at the event tonight. Bad News Barrett has some bad news that everybody is going to get sick but Big E will feel even worse after he loses the Intercontinental Championship tonight. Bad News Barrett is my favourite gimmick in the company right now. Barrett gets everyone cheering for him but it’s Big E with the first knockdown of the match. Barrett takes a breather and Big E follows him out but Bad News takes the advantage. Big E throws Barrett into the ringpost and then hits a big shoulder charge. Big E rolls Barrett into the ring but Barrett kicks Big E back out of the ring as he tries to get in. Barrett hits an elbow drop off the apron after giving the Mick Foley “bang bang”.

Bad News Barrett gets a one count on the first pinfall of the match and then looks for a suplex but Big E reverses and hits a suplex of his own. Barrett manages to hit a suplex for a two count and then applies a chinlock. Big E gets out of the chinlock but Barrett hits a cross body for a two count. Big E hits a splash and pulls down the straps before looking for the big ending but Barrett counters and looks for the bullhamer. Big E ducks it and bounces off the ropes but Barrett knocks him down with a big bullhammer for the three! Bad News Barrett becomes a four time Intercontinental Champion! Good match between these two.

There’s a video package next showing the rivalry between The Shield and Evolution.

The Shield (Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose) vs. Evolution (Triple H, Batista & Randy Orton)

This is a big match between two of the best stables of all time. As Extreme Rules records go Batista is 1-1, Randy Orton is 3-2, Triple H is 0-2 and The Shield are all 1-0. It’s so cool seeing Evolution come out to Motorhead again. This is such a better spot for Batista rather than trying to pass him off as a babyface. I always preferred him as a heel. There’s no Ric Flair but I wonder if that’s because Evolution would get cheered with Flair present. The six men stare off and then go at it. The bell hasn’t rung yet. The Shield clear the ring of Evolution. Seth Rollins and Triple H start the match and the bell rings. Seth lays in some big right hands and a dropkick. Seth hits a splash in the corner and then clotheslines Triple H out of the ring before hitting a suicide dive. Rollins rolls Triple H back into the ring and then has to fight off Orton. Triple H catches Rollins with a clothesline and then tags in Batista.

Batista gets loud boo’s. He hits Rollins with an Irish whip and then lays in some shoulder charges. Batista tags in Randy Orton as we start to see cheap shots behind the referee’s back from Evolution. Orton slingshots Rollins into the bottom rope and then tags in Triple H. Triple H hits Rollins with a right hand and a facebuster for a two count. Triple H tags Batista who hits forearm shots and a boot to Rollins who hangs over the ring apron. Batista gets a near fall and then tags in Randy Orton. Rollins has not made a tag yet. Orton suplexes Seth on to the top rope and then pins him for a near fall. Orton applies a chinlock but Seth gets out of it with a side slam. Batista and Triple H hammer Ambrose and Reigns off the apron. Rollins hits an enzeguri on Randy and both men need to make a tag. Rollins tags in Dean Ambrose who dropkicks Orton into his teammates. Ambrose hits a cross body on Orton and then kicks him down in the corner. Ambrose then shoves Batista off the apron.

Dean Ambrose hits Orton with a clothesline and then locks on a figure four but Triple H breaks it up. Roman Reigns clear the ring of Triple H and Batista. Reigns throws Batista into the barricade and then looks for a spear on Triple H who moves out of the way and Reigns hits the steel steps. Orton tags in Triple H who manages to beat down Ambrose. Triple H quickly tags in Batista as Evolution triple team Dean Ambrose. A “Boo-tista” chant breaks out as Triple H lays into Ambrose on the outside. Back in the ring and Batista clotheslines Ambrose for a two count. Batista tags in Orton who hits an Irish whip and clothesline on Ambrose for a two count. Orton applies a chinlock which Ambrose gets out of but Orton hits him with a dropkick for a two count. Randy tags in Triple H who hits Ambrose with lefts and rights but runs into Ambrose’s boots. Triple H hits a spinebuster for a two count and then tags in Batista.

Batista hits a reverse elbow on Ambrose for a two count and then locks on a sleeper. Ambrose gets out of it with a jawbreaker but Batista floors him with a big boot. Batista tags in Triple H who sets up for a pedigree but Ambrose back body drops him. Ambrose then hits a DDT and both men are down. Ambrose tags in Roman Reigns and Triple H tags Batista. Reigns wipes everyone out and then hits Batista with a big clothesline. Reigns clotheslines Orton and then disposes of him. Reigns goes to the outside, hits Batista with as drive-by kick, clotheslines Triple H and throws Orton into the barricade. Back in the ring and Batista catches Reigns, sets him up for a Batista bomb but Rollins comes off the top with a knee drop. Roman hits a superman punch on Batista and The Shield set up for the triple powerbomb! They hit the triple powerbomb on Batista and cover him but Evolution pull out Reigns.

The fight goes to the outside where Rollins dives out but misses and that looked painful. Triple H avoids a superman punch and hits Reigns with the pedigree! Dean Ambrose then takes out Triple H, taking the fight to the outside. Batista pins Reigns who kicks out at 2. Randy then hits an RKO on Reigns! Batista crawls over and pins him but Seth Rollins makes the save. Orton pulls Rollins out of the ring but Seth smashes Orton off the barricade. Orton repays the favour and sends Rollins over the barricade. Ambrose then comes diving off the announce table and takes out Orton and Triple H. Triple H and Seth Rollins take the fight through the crowd with Orton and Ambrose in tow. Roman Reigns and Batista are left in the ring. Seth Rollins dives off the top of a stand taking out Triple H, Randy Orton and Dean Ambrose.

Back in the ring Batista counters a spear with a spinebuster. Batista motions for a Batista bomb but Reigns counters with a superman punch and a spear for the three! The Shield beat Evolution tonight! Really fun match tonight between these six men.

This is an Extreme Rules debut for Bray Wyatt but John Cena has never lost in 5 previous matches at this event. Wyatt is joined by Luke Harper and Erick Rowan but they wont’ be in the cage tonight. Wyatt then hold Cena against the cage and Erick Rowan smashes into the side of the cage.

Wyatt hits a cross body for a two count and then launches Cena into the side of the cage again.

Paige (c) vs. Tamina – WWE Divas Championship match

This match wasn’t good. Everything just seemed off.

We go backstage where Bray Wyatt tells Little Johnny (the kid who helped him win earlier) that he did very well. The kid talks but I have no idea what he says because his voice has been warped.

There’s a video package next showing the recent history between Daniel Bryan and Kane.

And that was Extreme Rules 2014. It felt pretty average overall, if not slightly above average. The triple threat that opened the show was ok but I expected it to be better. Three very talented guys in a match that could have been very good. Jack Swagger was the first man eliminated which didn’t surprise me. It came down to Cesaro and Rob Van Dam and I think Cesaro was the right man to pick up the victory. Cesaro should get a good push and he’s been getting it since Wrestlemania, he just needs to keep the momentum going. Another man with a lot of momentum is Rusev who picked up a big handicap win over R-Truth and Xavier Woods. Rusev is being booked as unstoppable at the moment and I liked how he took out the two men separately in this match. A big win for Rusev who I expect to pick up more wins like this.

Bad News Barrett beat Big E to become the new Intercontinental Champion. I’m a big fan of Bad News Barrett and I think a lot of people are. It’s good to see him as IC Champion as it means more air time and more PPV matches. I’m not sure where Big E goes from here, he’s a fairly generic babyface but he’s good to watch and I hope he doesn’t fall by the wayside like Ezekiel Jackson did a couple of years ago. A good match between these two tonight. The Shield then beat Evolution in a match that I did think could main event the show. This was a really fun match and a great performance form all six guys involved. The Shield are the future though and they picked up the big win tonight. I’m not sure how long Batista is around for but with The Shield picking up the clean win it makes me think that this feud is probably over.

Bray Wyatt beat John Cena in a well thought out cage match to get revenge from Wrestlemania. I enjoyed this match but it did go on a touch too long. The ending was unique, it was strange and I’m not sure if I really liked it. I did like Bray Wyatt winning the match though, he needs to get his momentum back. I wouldn’t be too surprised to see a rubber match between the two at the next pay per view. Paige successfully defended her WWE Divas Championship against Tamina in a bit of a stinker. Something didn’t click here. I hope it isn’t that Paige is green. It’ll be interesting to see if her matches improve, she had a better match with AJ Lee on Raw to be honest. Tamina continues to be someone that Divas Champion beat on pay per view (Kaitlyn and Beth Phoenix also beat Tamina on PPV).

In the main event Daniel Bryan beat Kane to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. This was a standard first defence for Bryan and an expected win. The match was fun, the fire spot was good and added to the match. Bryan wins though and I expect him to have a long reign. Half expecting him to be against Batista going forward but we’ll have to see.

  1. Paige defending the Butterfly Belt against Tamina here is exactly like Bret “The Hitman” Hart defending the World Title against The Berzerker.
