Vengeance is the name of the game and the man looking to get it in tonights main event is Triple H. Triple H demanded another shot at the World Heavyweight Championship following his win over Shawn Michaels at Bad Blood and Eric Bischoff had no choice but to grant it. Since then, the feud between the two has mainly revolved around Eugene. Triple H has made Eugene a honoury member of Evolution but only to turn him against Chris Benoit. Triple H has something planned for Eugene but at the moment it’s unclear what this is. Triple H has even turned Eugene against William Regal, making him attack Regal with a chair. It’s been a bizarre month and most of the heat around Triple H and Chris Benoit has involved Eugene.

The Intercontinental Championship is also set to be defended tonight as Randy Orton takes on Edge. Edge has had a vendetta against Evolution since returning from injury and he plans on taking out Randy Orton next. All four members of Evolution are in action tonight in four different matches and Batista will be taking on Chris Jericho. This feud has mainly been built in tag team matches with Chris Jericho eliminating Batista in one and Batista pinning Jericho in another. Batista would cost Chris the Intercontinental Championship in a match against Randy Orton on Raw last week. A couple of weeks ago Eugene was put in charge of Raw in Eric Bischoffs absence. Eugene made a match for Vengeance where he would team up with Ric Flair to take on the World Tag Team Champions La Resistance. No real build for this one besides Eugene’s issues with La Resistance over the past few months. Needless to say, Flair isn’t happy with having to team with Eugene.

The only other match announced prior to the vent is between Matt Hardy and Kane. Lita has revealed recently that she is pregnant and after initial jubilation from Matt Hardy, Kane would reveal that the baby isn’t Matts but instead it is Kane’s. Lita isn’t sure who’s the baby is and although Matt wants no part of Lita due to what she has done to him, he does want Kane and the two go one on one tonight.

On Sunday Night Heat prior to the event Tyson Tomko defeated Val Venis. Two other matches were added to the Vengeance card with Victoria taking on Molly Holly for number one contendership to the Women’s Championship and we’ll be kicking off with a tag team match. Jonathan Coachman and Tajiri must both find partners.

A video package kicks us off showing the recent history between Chris Benoit and Triple H. Jim Ross then welcomes us to Vengeance, he’s joined by Jerry “The King” Lawler.

Tajiri & Rhyno vs. Jonathan Coachman & Garrison Cade

This match was made on Sunday Night Heat prior to the show because Tajiri sprayed green mist in Coach’s eyes during a game of musical chairs on Raw last week. Eric Bischoff told both men they could find a tag team partner for a match tonight. Jerry Lawler incorrectly tells us that Tajiri beat Coach at Backlash. All four of these men making their Vengeance debut tonight. Coach quickly tags out to Garrison Cade to start the match against Rhyno. Rhyno applies a headlock which Cade gets out of but Rhyno knocks him down. This is Rhyno’s first pay per view since being drafted to Raw. Cade slaps Rhyno which fires the former United States Champion up. Rhyno hits a hiptoss and them motions for the gore but has to put the brakes on as Garrison escapes the ring. Rhyno tags out to Tajiri who hits some of his trademark kicks and a low dropkick.

Tajiri rolls Cade up for a one count and Coach then takes a cheap shot on Tajiri but lives to regret it as Tajiri kicks him off the apron. The distraction is enough for Cade to hit a side suplex on Tajiri. Cade tags out to Coach who lays into Tajiri. Coach hits an Irish whip and a powerslam but gets a kick to the face as he mocks Tajiri. Coach isn’t looking too out of place here. He drops and elbow and then tags out to Cade. Coach and Cade hit a double suplex and Cade gets the first near fall of the night. Coach tags in and applies a double arm bar but breaks the hold. Tajiri applies the tarantula to Coach and then hits a mule kick to enable him to tag out to Rhyno. Rhyno hits Coach with a suplex and then a back body drop to Cade. It’s all Rhyno now as he hits a belly to belly on Coach for a near fall.

Tajiri makes a blind tag and then lays into Coach and then hits a springboard elbow on both opponents. Tajiri looks to spray green mist at Coach but Coach moves and Tajiri sprays Cade! Rhyno then looks to gore Coach but Coach gets out of the way and Rhyno nails Cade! Coach wipes his brown but turns around into a kick to the face from Tajiri! Tajiri pins Coach and gets the 3! The two former ECW superstars get the win tonight. Decent way to kick off the show tonight.

Evolution is backstage and Ric Flair isn’t happy with having to team up with Eugene tonight. Triple H says everything is going to be fine tonight. Helmsley then wants to know where Eugene is because Evolution are supposed to be looking after him. Triple H finds Eugene talking to Chris Benoit.

Chris Jericho vs. Batista

This is the first of four Evolution matches tonight. Jericho has a 2-1 record at Vengeance pay per views. He’s previously beaten The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin (in the same night!) and lost to John Cena. Batista makes his Vengeance debut tonight. Batista is currently undefeated on PPV in 2004 having previously won in 2 tag team matches at The Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania, it’s his first Raw brand only PPV of 2004 tonight. Batista takes Jericho down in the early going and chokes him with his boot. Jericho takes the advantage by dropping the top rope and sending the big man to the outside before hitting him with his trademark springboard dropkick. Jericho then misses with a baseball slide which allows Batista to take him down with a clothesline and then smash him into the barricade.

There’s no Flair at ringside for Batista tonight. Back in the ring and Batista hits a neckbreaker for the first near fall of the night. Batista has a decent enough PPV record having won 4 of his 6 matches. His only singles loss came to Shawn Michaels at Armageddon last year. Batista applies a chinlock and then a full nelson which Jericho gets out of and then hits somewhat of an arm drag out of the ring. Batista gets back in and Jericho hits him with a dropkick to the knee. Batista pops Jericho on the top rope and then goes for a back suplex but Jericho elbows him to the mat and then comes off the top with a reverse elbow for a near fall. Batista hits a sidewalk slam for a near fall. Batista hits a backbreaker for a near fall as the pace starts to slow down. Batista applies somewhat of a backbreaking submission hold.

This is a first PPV meeting between these two men. Jericho gets out of the backbreaker and both men are down. Jericho hits a running forearm to take Batista down and then a chop block. Y2J attempts to lock on the walls of Jericho but Batista kicks him away. Batista then hits a big spinebuster for a near fall. Batista sets up for a Batista down but Jericho counters it into a sunset flip for a near fall. Jericho hits a bulldog from the middle rope and then attempts a lionsault but Batista gets his knees up. Batista then attempts a clothesline but Jericho ducks it and hits a running enzeguri for a near fall. The two men slug it out and Batista takes the advantage with a spinebuster. Batista then hits the Batista bomb! He hooks the leg and get the 3! But Jericho’s foot was on the rope! Batista pushes it off after the count but the referee didn’t see it. Nor did Jim Ross. This match goes down as a win for Batista! Decent match between these two.

Triple H, Randy Orton and Ric Flair are backstage when Eugene shows up annoyed with Evolution because Chris Benoit told him that Triple H has been lying to him. Triple H talks him round and says he has a huge surprise for Eugene. Ric Flair goes off to get it and it s a Ric Flair robe for Eugene! This has to be one of my favourite builds to a match ever.

La Resistance (Sylvain Grenier & Rob Conway) (c) vs. Ric Flair & Eugene – World Tag Team Championship Match

Grenier and Conway to look to win a PPV match together for the first time. It’s a first time Vengeance outing for all four men (unless you count Rob Conways appearance as a Conquistador in the bar room brawl at last years event and Eugene under the hood of Doink The Clown). Flair and Eugene come out in matching robes and Eugene copies everything Flair does. Grenier sings the Canadian national anthem before the bell. Eugene goes into this one undefeated on pay per view following his win over Coach at Bad Blood. Eugene and Rob Conway start the match and Eugene applies a headlock and hammerlock early on. Eugene hits a hiptoss and a knife edge chop. Flair is not happy at all. Conway tags Grenier as a “Eugene” chant breaks out. Eugene takes down Grenier and follows it up with a knee drop, a knife edge chop and a Ric Flair strut.

Grenier hits a knee and a back body drop to take the advantage but Eugene hits a thumb to the eye. Grenier tags in Conway who is yet to win a match on pay per view. The two men exchange chops and Conway hits some big right hands. Eugene even falls to the mat in a delayed fashion like Flair. Eugene looks to apply a figure four but Conway kicks him away and Flair tags himself in. Flair struts around much to the enjoyment of the crowd and then hits some chops and right hands on both members of La Resistance. Flair hits a back body drop and reverse elbow on Grenier before going back to work on Conway. This is the first of three title matches tonight. Flair hits a knee drop on Grenier and then a chop on Conway. Slick Ric hits a suplex on Conway and then struts across the ring. Flair then applies a figure four on Conway but Grenier breaks it up.

Grenier tags in and lays the boots in on Flair. Grenier hits some lefts and rights on Flair, taking him down to the mat for a near fall. Grenier tags in Conway who exchanges chops with the Nature Boy. Conway actually has blood on one pec from the chops. This is a second PPV title defence for La Resistance who lost to Chris Benoit and Edge by disqualification at Bad Blood. Conway hits a clothesline for a near fall and then tags in Sylvain Grenier. Flair hits a couple of chops on Grenier but Grenier hits some kicks and a back body drop for a two count. Grenier then quickly applies a chinlock. Flair gets out of it but get knocked right back down. Grenier tags in Conway who applies a front face lock. Grenier attacks Eugene so he can’t make a tag. La Resistance then double team Flair, hitting him with the “Au Revoir”. Eugene breaks up the cover, throwing Conway out of the ring and then lays into Grenier.

Eugene smashes Grenier’s knee into the ring post and then hits some lefts and rights on Conway. Eugene has snapped and he shoves the referee down before hitting a stunner on Grenier and a rock bottom and people’s elbow on Conway. The referee has already called for the bell though, La Resistance have won this one by disqualification! Another decent match.

Rating: 6.25/10

Matt Hardy vs. Kane – No Disqualification match

This, like every match so far, is a first time PPV meeting. Both men are yet to score a win at a Vengeance PPV with Kane having lost in tag team action back in 2001 and Matt Hardy previously losing both of his Vengeance matches. Neither men have won at PPV match in 2004 yet either. Kane has lost all four of his (Royal Rumble match, Undertaker at Wrestlemania, Edge at Backlash and Chris Benoit at Bad Blood). Matt Hardy lost his only match in the Royal Rumble. A loss for Kane tonight would put him equal with The Undertaker for most PPV losses of all time. Hardy and Kane get right into it outside the ring. No sign of Lita so far but I’m sure she’ll make an appearance (and probably cost Hardy the match). Hardy smashes Kane into the barricade and announce table before hitting him with a TV monitor. Matt then tries for a twist of fate on the announce table but Kane shoves him off and then knocks him into the crowd.

Kane drops Matt on the barricade and then over it. Only Christian has fought more PPV matches than Matt Hardy without main eventing. Kane throws Hardy into the ring and chokes him before laying in some boots and uppercuts. Kane hits a clothesline on Hardy outside the ring and then throws him back into the ring. Kane hits a sidewalk slam for a near fall and then applies a chinlock. This feels like Matt Hardy’s first big programme since he was in the Cruiserweight division over a year ago. Kane smashes Hardy into the top turnbuckle and hits him with some reverse elbows and right hands and then a clothesline. Kane throws Hardy into the entrance ramp and then back into the ring before coming off the top with a big clothesline. Kane throws Matt out of the ring and although Hardy tries fighting back with a chair, Kane takes him down with a boot.

Kane puts Matt back in the ring and throws the chair in with him. Matt fights back though, dropping Kane on the top rope and tying him up in the bottom rope. Hardy then lays into Kane with right hands and then a shot with the ring bell. Hardy goes up top and hits a legdrop to the back of Kane’s head. Hardy goes for the twist of fate but Kane hits him with a back body drop. Kane then sets up for a tombstone but Hardy nips down and hits the twist of fate which Kane kicks out of. Kane hits a chokeslam and grabs the steel steps, throwing them into the ring. Out comes Lita who stands in between Kane and Hardy. She tells Kane to put the stairs down and angrily he does. Kane shoves Lita into the corner and then grabs the steps again but Hardy swings a chair at him, knocking him to the floor. Hardy then hooks the leg and gets the 3! Matt Hardy beats Kane tonight! That’s a huge upset. Kane goes 0-5 on pay per view in 2004!

Randy Orton (c) vs. Edge – Intercontinental Championship Match

Again, this is a first time PPV meeting. Edge is looking to make it three PPV wins from 3 in 2004. Edge is 1-1 at Vengeance pay per views, Orton make his Vengeance debut tonight. Edge is a four time Intercontinental Champion and was the IC champion at the very first Vengeance PPV back in 2001. The Intercontinental Championship has never changed hands at a Vengeance pay per view. Orton has a great PPV record, winning 6 of his 8 matches and he’s never lost in one on one singles action. The crowd are firmly behind Orton in this one which is unexpected. Orton applies a headlock which Edge reverses. Orton gets out of the headlock but Orton knocks him down. More Orton chants as Edge goes back to the headlock and then knocks down Randy.

Orton and Edge criss cross which is weird. Edge then takes Orton down with a headlock. More boo’s. edge knocks Orton down repeatedly until Randy rolls out of the ring. This has been a very slow match so far. I get the feeling there’s a long way to go yet. Edge has previously beaten the likes of Jeff Jarrett, Christian, Test and Lance Storm for the Intercontinental Championship. Orton throws Edge out of the ring and then suplexes him back in for a near fall. Randy hits an uppercut and then chokes Edge on the rope. It’s amazing how much better this show has been than the Smackdown PPV’s since Wrestlemania. It’s like night and day. Orton hits some clubbing blows to Edge and then a snapmare into a modified chinlock. All the title matches tonight involve members of Evolution. A “boring” chant breaks out. We can thank Austin for those chants.

Edge gets out of the chinlock and knocks Orton down with a forearm and a couple of clotheslines. More boo’s. Edge is not popular tonight. He clotheslines Orton out of the ring and Randy grabs his title belt. Edge baseball slides Orton down to the floor. Randy is the man on the poster for this pay per view. Edge hits a clothesline on the outside, rolls Randy back into the ring and then comes off the top with a missile dropkick for a near fall. Edge motions for the spear but Randy counters it with a kick to the face. Orton then hits his trademark modified backbreaker for a near fall. Orton hits an elbow to the throat of Edge as a high pitched “let’s go Edge” chant breaks out. Orton goes back to the chinlock and then heels all over the crowd who are chanting for him. Randy hits a legdrop for a two count.

Edge hits a boot to the face of Orton and then fires back with some forearms. Orton drops him with a knee to the abdomen and then a knee drop. Randy has been working the throat of Edge all match, weakening it up for the RKO no doubt. Randy hits an impressive dropkick for a near fall and then once again goes back to the chinlock. Edge gets out of it but Orton takes him right back down with a clothesline. Edge gets back into it with a neckbreaker. I’m not going to lie, this match has been terribly dull. Both men are down. This reminds me, I need to paint mt bathroom wall later. Both men slug it out and then Edge hits a side Russian leg sweep for a near fall. Edge avoids a dropkick and then slingshots Randy into the corner before hitting the Edge-o-cution. Or is it the Edge-o-matic? Dunno, don’t think JR does either. It gets Edge a two count anyway.

Edge goes up top but Orton is up with him before trying a superplex. Edge counters it and suplexes Orton onto the top rope before flying off the top with a cross body. Randy rolls through it for a near fall and then hits a thumb to the eye. Orton then takes off the top turnbuckle and the referee goes to tie it back on and misses a roll up from Edge. Orton hits a dropkick for a two count. Edge hits an impaler DDT which gets him a near fall. Come on, we know this one is ending with either a spear or an RKO. Either Orton is losing a singles match on PPV for the first time or Edge is losing on PPV in 2004 for the first time. Edge hits some right hands but Orton drops him to the mat and rolls him up with his feet on the ropes for a two count. Orton goes for an RKO but Edge pushes him into the tunrbuckle and goes for a spear but Orton leapfrogs it.

Orton goes for an RKO but Edge counters it into a backslide for a near fall. Edge Irish whips Orton into the exposed turnbuckle and follows it up with a spear! Edge hooks the leg and that’s the match! Edge wins the Intercontinental Championship tonight in a dreadfully dull match. They put the effort in and were given a lot of time but there was a lot of chinlocks. There’s a decent pop when Edge wins and a lot of boo’s when Orton gets back up to his feet after the match. I don’t know if they’re boo’s for Orton or boo’s for the result. Not sure if he was expecting a standing ovation but he wasn’t going to get one for that.

Victoria vs. Molly Holly – Number one contenders match for the WWE Women’s Championship

This is a Wrestlemania XX re-match in which Victoria won. It’s both girls first match at a Vengeance event. Molly is wearing a blonde bob wig with a fetching chinstrap. Victoria hits a monkey flip in the early going and a powerslam. Victoria then goes for her trademark standing moonsault but Molly rolls her up. Molly applies a headlock but Victoria gets out of it and hits a couple of armdrags and a springboard moonsault for a two count. Molly heads to the outside and Victoria hits a plancha out at her. Victoria walks back up the steps but Molly sweeps her leg. Molly rolls back into the ring and would be happy with a count out win. Victoria rolls back in and Molly applies a hammerlock and then lays in some boots. Moly then hits a handspring elbow in the corner for a near fall. Molly applies another hammerlock and then an armbar.

These two girls are certainly two of the best 10 of all time in my opinion. Molly drops Victoria on the top rope and then kicks her out of the ring. She rolls Victoria into the ring and then drops an elbow on her. Victoria rolls Molly up out of nowhere for a two count. Victoria hits a reverse elbow and then a powerslam for a two count. Victoria attempts the widow’s peak but her shoulder gives out. She then hits a super kick and that’s it. Victoria wins. The crowd are dead. Not a great match.

Chris Benoit (c) vs. Triple H – World Heavyweight Championship Match

This is the second PPV singles match between these two men. Triple H won the previous match back at No Mercy 2000 nearly four years ago. Benoit has won all four of his PPV matches in 2004 whilst Triple H has only won 1. Chris Benoit has lost twice at Vengeance PPV’s before whilst this is a debut for Triple H at the event. Triple H loves his white boots for a pay per view. There has only been one World Heavyweight Championship match on pay per view that hasn’t involved Triple H and that was at Bad Blood when Benoit beat Kane. Triple H did of course go on after that match so still technically main evented. There’s a bit of chain wrestling between the two in the early going. The crowd behind Benoit in this match. So far Evolution have lost both of the title matches they have been involved with. More chain wrestling between these two, headlocks, hammerlocks and arm drags.

Triple H powers Benoit down with a shoulder charge. Benoit hits a hiptoss and then goes for a crossface but Triple H gets straight to the ropes and exits the ring. Chris goes after him and lays in some chops before ramming Helmsley’s face into the barrier. Back in the ring and Triple H hits a running high knee and then a suplex. Benoit is the longest reigning champion on Raw at the moment. Triple H takes him down with a reverse elbow for a near fall. Backbreaker from Triple H before The Game throws Benoit out of the ring. Triple H rams Benoit into the side of the ring and then rolls him back into the ring where the champion hits some chops and a snap suplex. Triple H hits a reverses elbow and then attempts a clothesline but Benoit ducks it and hits him with a German suplex before slingshotting Triple H into the top turnbuckle. Benoit clotheslines Helmsley out of the ring but gets caught with a thumb to the eye. Benoit Irish whips Triple H into the ring steps.

Triple H gets rolled back into the ring and Benoit tries for a headbutt off the top but Triple H gets out of the way. Triple H then hits a hard Irish whip on Benoit, sternum first. Only one man in history has fought more PPV matches than Triple H and won more and that’s The Undertaker. Triple H hits another hard Irish whip and a suplex, both aimed at Benoits sternum for a near fall. Triple H hits another inverted suplex for a near fall and then applies a double armbar. Triple H then locks on an abdominal stretch but Benoit counters it into one of his own but only for a moment as Triple H hiptosses him off. Triple H applies a sleeper but Benoit gets out of it and tries for a sharpshooter but Triple H kicks him away. Triple H then attempts the pedigree but Benoit counters it and this time locks on the sharpshooter! Helmsley manages to get to the ropes to break the hold.

This match has been a bit of a slow one. We’re definitely in a different era of match styles. Gone are 20 minutes are smashing each other with weapons and now it’s 20 minutes of submissions. I preferred the former. Benoit hits 3 consecutive German suplexes and then heads to the top where he’ll try for a diving headbutt but Triple H rolls out of the ring. Benoit then suicide dives out of the ring taking Triple H out. Back in the ring and Triple H aims to take Benoit out with a forearm but Benoit moves and Triple H takes out the referee. Helmsley takes Benoit down with a DDT and then shouts for Eugene? Eugene comes out from the back and we might be about to find out why Triple H is so keen to gain Eugene’s trust. Benoit applies the crippler crossface to Triple H and shouts at Eugene to get the ref. Triple H taps out but there’s no referee.

Eugene starts to climb in the ring so Benoit breaks the hold and then smashes Eugene off the apron. Boo’s for Benoit now. Triple H hits Benoit with a low blow and then a pedigree. Triple H tells Eugene to get the ref and Eugene obliges. Benoit kicks out at 2! Triple H asks Eugene to get him a chair and once again Eugene obliges. Triple H holds up the chair but Eugene tries to pull it back off him! Triple H then shoves Eugene off the apron! Benoit dives at Triple H and then grabs the chair himself! Out comes Ric Flair and Batista so Benoit takes both of them down with the chair. Eugene is then in the ring and Benoit tells him to leave. Triple H kicks Benoit and picks up the chair but Benoit hits him with a low blow! Eugene picks up the chair and looks to hit Benoit with it but changes his mind and looks to hit Triple H. He can’t decide who to hit!

Benoit tries to wrestle the chair off Eugene but Eugene ends up accidentally hitting Triple H with it! Benoit then rolls Triple H up and the referee counts the 3! Chris Benoit wins the match and retains his World Heavyweight Championship! Eugene is in tears as this bullying a mentally disabled person storyline takes a new twist.

Rating: 6.5/10

Well that was Vengeance 2004. Not a terrible show by any stretch and probably one of the better shows of 2004 so far. It’s like night and day compared to Smackdown brand pay per views. The show kicked off with a fun tag team match which Tajiri and Rhyno won. I can see this tandem sticking around and becoming a regular team in Raws tag team division. Prepare for “ECW” chants though. The way this match ended may signal the end for the Coach and Garrison Cade relationship which has been pretty much pointless over the last few months. I wonder how the Raw talents feel that Coach is getting on these big shows? None the less it’s a big win for Rhyno and Tajiri who I wouldn’t be surprised to see feud with La Resistance at some point.

Batista beats Chris Jericho but it wasn’t clean. Jericho had his foot on the rope which suggests that this feud isn’t over yet. Either that or Jericho just did not want to do the job. This was a decent enough match and it shows that they have high hopes for Batista. Good win for him tonight, he was the only member of Evolution to pick up a win. La Resistance picked up a victory over Ric Flair and Eugene by disqualification after Eugene lost the plot. Eugene does show heel characteristics at time. I’m glad La Resistance retained the titles though, Smackdown seem to like throwing teams together and winning the belts, I’m glad Raw is avoiding that for now. It was a fun way to get Ric Flair on this card in any case. Matt Hardy defeated Kane in the biggest shocker of the night. I definitely wasnt expecting this and it means Kane has not recorded a PPV victory so far in 2004. This was made to look like a fluke so it wasn’t a great win for Hardy. I expect this feud to carry on over the next few months. Matt should be happy that he’s actually involved with something on Raw at the moment.

Edge beat Randy Orton in a match that went on way too long. 20 minutes of this match was utterly dull with way too many chinlocks and submissions. “Rest holds” if you will. Edge won the Intercontinental Championship which helps keep the title on a high pedestal. The mid card titles on both Raw and Smackdown are both very strong thanks to guys like Randy Orton and John Cena. I wish this match was shorter and the two do have chemistry but this just wasn’t good. This result allows Randy to move on up the card now. Victoria and Molly Holly didn’t put on the best match and it was a fairly predictable win for Victoria. The crowd were just dead for this one which was a shame. I like both of these girls but with Trish Stratus injured there was no Women’s title match on this show.

Then in the main event Chris Benoit beat Triple H with a lot of help from Eugene. After all the build surrounding Eugene I guess it made sense to have Eugene involved in the result of this match. Eugene smashes Triple H with the chair and it’s all over. But is this rivalry over? Who knows. I wouldn’t be surprised to see both of these men involved in the Summerslam main event next month. Decent match between these two. Overall a decent show with some good matches (and a couple of bad ones). If you’re picking a show to watch from 2004 then this is better than most although still very average in a lot of ways.
