Business Can Be Brutal. And tonight it is guaranteed to be just that. Unless it’s referring to the diminishing business of the WWE as attendances and buyrates continue to drop through 2004. Tonight though, John “Bradshaw” Layfield must defend his WWE Championship one more time against The Undertaker. Layfield retained his title against The Undertaker at Summerslam by disqualification only to get Tombstoned through the roof of his own limo after the bell. JBL would walk around in a neckbrace in the weeks following but helped his chief of staff Orlando Jordan retain his WWE title in a match versus The Undertaker. Teddy Long would make the rematch between JBL and Undertaker a Last Ride match for No Mercy. Since then, JBL has involved two of Undertakers former lackey’s Viscera and Gangrel, both of which Undertaker disposed of before the dead man also took Orlando Jordan out of the equation.

Big Show was re-signed to Smackdown by Teddy Long and he came back by taking out the whole Smackdown roster during a lumberjack match. Long would allow Big Show to choose his opponent for No Mercy from either Kurt Angle or Eddie Guerrero and Show decided to face Angle, the man who he threw off a balcony a few months ago. Big Show has found himself on the receiving end of attacks from Angles lackey’s Luther Reigns and Mark Jindrak and last week on Smackdown, Kurt shot Show with a tranquiliser dart and then proceeded to shave his head. Luther Reigns will also be in action as he goes one on one with Eddie Guerrero, the man he pinned in a tag team match last week on Smackdown.

The United States Championship will be on the line as the best of 5 series between Booker T and John Cena comes to an end. The series is 2 all heading into the final match and Cena knows that a win tonight will result in him regaining the belt. Kenzo Suzuki and Rene Dupree won the WWE Tag Team Championships from Billy Kidman and Paul London a few weeks ago and went as far as to attack Rey Mysterio after he became a thorn in their side. Rob Van Dam would make the save for his friend and the tag team title match was made for No Mercy between the two teams. Billy Kidman cost he and Paul London their titles after deciding not to hit the 450 splash following an injury he caused to Chavo Guerrero with the move. Since then Kidman has walked away from London on many occasions until Smackdown last week where he attacked London with a chair. The two go one on one tonight knowing that if Kidman walks away again then he will be fired.

Don’t be surprised to see Nunzio get a Cruiserweight title shot tonight following his non-title victory over Spike Dudley on Smackdown last week. Dawn Marie has also been telling the world that she has been having an affair with Charlie Haas. Miss Jackie has taken exception to it and there may just be a 6 person tag team match tonight with Charlie Haas, Rico and Miss Jackie against The Dudley Boyz and Dawn Marie. On paper this looks like the best Smackdown brand PPV since the split.

On Sunday Night Heat prior to the event Mark Jindrak defeated Scotty 2 Hotty.

A video package kicks us off, firstly with words from Big Show and Kurt Angle followed by Booker T and John Cena and then JBL and The Undertaker. This card definitely looks like the strongest Smackdown only PPV so far. Michael Cole and Tazz then welcome us to the show.

Eddie Guerrero vs. Luther Reigns

Well doesn’t this feel like a fall from grace for Eddie? Probably the match I’ve got the least interest in. Eddie has only wrestled at one No Mercy PPV and that was in a losing effort to The Big Show. Luther Reigns makes his No Mercy debt tonight and comes in undefeated on pay per view. Reigns is joined by Mark Jindrak who has joined him and Kurt Angle recently. Luther uses his power in the early going, taking Eddie down with a clothesline. Eddie fights back with a thumb to the eye, a reverse elbow and then a drop toe hold into a chinlock. Reigns beat Charlie Haas in his only previous pay per view match. He fights out of the chinlock and takes Guerrero down with a shoulder block.

Eddie hits a running dropkick for the first near fall of the night but Luther is back into t with a military press for a near fall of his own. There’s no way Guerrero can lose this. Surely. Reigns hits a hard Irish whip and then applies a bearhug. Eddie gets out of it but runs into a big boot. Reigns hits some jabs for a near fall and then applies a chinlock. Eddie gets out of it with a big dropkick and then applies a side headlock but Reigns takes him down with a side suplex for a two count. Reigns hits a backbreaker as Jindrak cheers him on from the outside. No match for Jindrak on the main card tonight, he beat Scotty 2 Hotty on Heat prior to the event. Eddie attempts a running nothing but Reigns ducks a pulls the rope down which sends Eddie to the outside and allows Jindrak to lay in some stomps.

This is a big match for Luther Reigns, could he be on the receiving end of a big push? Back in the ring and Luther hits another reverse elbow for another near fall. Luther goes back to the backbreaker and then hits Eddie with a modified dominator for a very close near fall. Reigns goes for his trademark swinging neckbreaker but Eddie fights out of it and hits a springboard inverted DDT. The two men get up to their feet and it’s all Eddie now as he hits elbows, dropkicks and clotheslines. Guerrero attempts the three amigos but Reigns counters the third and hits an inverted suplex on the former WWE Champion. Eddie heads to the outside and pick-pockets and truncheon from a security guard at ringside.

Guerrero then grabs a steel chair but Luther grabs it off him. Guerrero then dropkicks the chair into Reign’s face before going to the top but missing with the frog splash! The referee takes the chair out of the ring which allows Guerrero to smash Reigns with the truncheon! The referee doesn’t see it and so Eddie goes back up top and this time connects with the frog splash! Eddie hooks the leg, gets the 3 and wins the match. An entertaining enough match between these two, with the right man getting the win.

We see some footage from Smackdown with Dawn Marie and Miss Jackie going at it. Josh Mathews is backstage with Dawn Marie now, asking about Dawn and her  relationship with Charlie Haas. Dawn says that she can’t help it that Haas always goes to her. Dawn then finds Miss Jackie who is getting ready backstage. Dawn says that Charlie told her that Miss Jackie forced Charlie into their engagement.

Spike Dudley (c) vs. Nunzio – Cruiserweight Championship Match

This match is a result of Nunzio pinning Spike on Smackdown last week. Spike is joined by The Dudley Boyz and Nunzio has Johnny “The Bull” Stamboli with him. It’s a first PPV match between these two men. No Mercy debuts for both of these men tonight. Both men are ECW alumni. Nunzio hits a couple of hiptosses in the early going, sending Spike to the outside. Back in the ring and Spike hits some kicks and right hands. Nunzio rolls Spike up a couple of times and then applies an arm ringer. Spike applies a hammerlock and Nunzio gets out of it by throwing Spike to the outside. Nunzio then flies to the outside with a big of a messy plancha. Nunzio throws Spike back into the ring for a near fall.

Nunzio goes for a slam but Spike counters it. Nunzio then hits the slam and then goes to the top but Bubba Ray distracts the referee and D-Von throws Nunzio off the top. Spike hits a snapmare and then a full nelson which is a move you don’t see very often. Nunzio fights out of it with elbows but Spike takes Nunzio down with a drop toe hold. Nunzio then goes up to the second rope but Spike sees him coming and hits a dropkick. Bubba Ray gets involved again, choking Nunzio on the ropes as Spike distracts the referee. Spike then goes back to the full nelson which Nunzio fights out of. Nunzio hits somewhat of a powerbomb and both men are down. Nunzio hits a side suplex for a near fall and then Irish whips Spike face first into the corner for a two count.

Nunzio goes up to the middle rope and hits a legdrop on Spike who gets his foot on the bottom rope to break up the pin. Spike then tosses Nunzio out of the ring and then attempts a stomp to the outside but Nunzio gets out of the way and hits a back body drop. Back in the ring and Spike hits his running headbutt on Nunzio and then attempts the Dudley dog but Nunzio counters it with a backslide for a two count. D-Von grabs the leg of Nunzio but Stamboli fights off D-Von. With the referee distracted Bubba Ray crotches Nunzio around the ringpost. Spike then pins Nunzio and gets the three! Spike retains his Cruiserweight Championship! Decent match between these two.

Paul London vs. Billy Kidman

A first PPV match between these two men on both of their No Mercy debuts. London is looking for his first PPV victory tonight. Kidman sort of reminds me of Paul Roma. They have a very similar look. They’ve built this pay per view very well where every match means something and this one is a perfect example of that. London hits a dropkick to the outside in the early going. Back in the ring and London hits a back body drop, snapmare and kick to the back. London then hits a mulekick and a heel kick for the first near fall of the match. Paul then hits a couple of dropkicks, sending Kidman all the way to the outside of the ring. London has been tremendous so far in this match. He hits an amazing looking springboard moonsault to the outside before rolling Kidman back in and hitting a splash for a two count.

Kidman rakes the eyes of London and then kicks him hard in the face. Kidman then throws London into the ring post before laying in some boots and then hitting a baseball slide. Kidman has had a semi-decent three year run since signing with the WWE from wCw back in 2001. He applies an abdominal stretch which London fights out of. Kidman hits some big kicks for a two count. Kidman then applies a double arm bar. London fight out of it and hits some right hands and then attempts a leapfrog but Kidman catches him and hits Paul with a gutbuster for a near fall. Kidman hits a flapjack for another two count and then applies an armbar. The third match on a No Mercy card has always been won by the babyfaces, can London keep that going?

The two men slug it out and a kick to the middle section from Kidman slows it down. London gets back into it with a forearm and a jumping spin kick. London hits an enzeguri for a two count. London then attempts a powerbomb but Kidman counters it into a “BK Bomb” for a near fall. London hits a big hurricanrana for a two count but Kidman then hits him with a dropkick. Kidman heads to the top but then stops and leaves the ring. Kidman heads back into the ring and attempts a side suplex but London nips down and hits him with a superkick. London then heads to the top and goes for a shooting star press but Kidman gets his knees up! Kidman then goes up top and hits his shooting star press, hooks the leg and gets the 3! Kidman wins the match tonight!

After the match Billy Kidman gets on the mic and blames the fans for what he just did to London. London is bleeding from the match and gets put on a stretcher. Kidman then goes up top again and hits another shooting star press on London whilst he’s strapped down! Good match between these two, plenty of heat.

John Mathews is backstage with John “Bradshaw” Layfield who wonders why the PPV is so biased towards The Undertaker. Layfield struggles to guarantee victory tonight. But he does say that The Undertaker will only win the WWE Championship over his dead body.

Rene Dupree & Kenzo Suzuki (c) vs. Rob Van Dam & Rey Mysterio – WWE Tag Team Championship Match

It’s a first time match between these two tag team. Dupree and Suzuki are joined by Hiroko and Fifi the dog. It’s a No Mercy debut for Kenzo and Dupree, Mysterio has previously lost at 2 No Mercy PPV’s whilst Van Dam has a 1-1 record. Kenzo sings “Born In The USA” in a bizarre way to kick off this match. It’s actually the first time the tag team champions team up on pay per view. RVD and Mysterio teamed up at Judgment Day to defeat The Dudley Boyz. Van Dam and Dupree kick off the match. Both men roll around in the early going, lots of pinfall attempts and counters until the two men stand off.

Mysterio tags himself in and he hits Dupree with a dropkick for a near fall. Kenzo Suzuki then tags himself in and he lays into Mysterio with kicks and chops. Mysterio hits him with a dropkick and then a basement dropkick in the corner before disposing of both WWE Tag Team Champions. Mysterio tags in Van Dam and both men fly to the outside, taking out the champs. I like real tag teams and sadly I don’t class either teams as proper tag teams. Back in the ring and Suzuki hits Van Dam with a chop. RVD hits a clotheslines and then a spin kick, taking out Dupree in the process. He then goes up top but Dupree pushes him off, to the outside. Back in the ring and Suzuki hits a chop, a powerslam and a knee drop. Suzuki hits a snapmare and tags in Rene Dupree. I like Dupree. He applies a chinlock to the only man so far tonight that has won at a No Mercy PPV before.

Dupree tags in Suzuki who hits a chop. Kenzo applies an armbar but Van Dam gets out of it and kicks him in the face. Van Dam then tags in Mysterio who springboard headbutts his way in. Mysterio then hits a spinning DDT for a two count. Rey hits some big right hands in the corner and then a springboard seated senton for a near fall. Kenzo hits a chop and then Mysterio sets him up for a 619 but Rene Dupree gets involved. All four men are then in the ring and RVD hits rolling thunder on Dupree. Mysterio hits the 619 on Kenzo Suzuki and then attempts a west coast pop but Dupree pushes him off the top. Van Dam dives out at Dupree and then Kenzo rolls up Mysterio with his hands on the ropes and gets the 3! Kenzo and Rene retain their tag team championships tonight!

The Big Show vs. Kurt Angle

This is the third PPV match between these men with both men having won a match each previously. Kurt has a 3-1 record at No Mercy PPV’s whilst Big Show has a 1-1 record. Both men were successful at last years event. This is the first time Big Show hasn’t been fighting for a championship at this event. Both men are now bald on top! This is Big Show’s first match back since he threw Kurt Angle off a balcony. Ironically, Show is the face now and Angle the heel. Big Show throws Kurt across the ring in the early going. Tazz compares the size of The Big Show’s back to a pool table, I like that. Show hits a shoulder block to take Kurt down again. Big Show hits a suplex and then walks over Angles chest. He hits a hard Irish whip and then lifts Kurt high above his head before throwing him down to the mat.

Kurt rolls to the outside. He beat The Big Show for the WWE Championship at Armageddon 2002 but he heads to the back. The referee then counts him out! Angle runs through the crowd, this one is over! Or is it? Teddy Long comes out from the back and tells him that if he runs away then he’s fired. Teddy restarts the match and tells Kurt that if he doesn’t get back in the ring then he’s fired. Kurt gets back into the ring and the bell rings. Big Show hits him with some big chops and then hiptosses him across the ring. Show hits an Irish whip sending Angle out of the ring. Kurt grabs a chair but Big show punches it back into his face. Back in the ring and Big Show hits a legdrop and more chops. Kurt goes up to the middle rope but Big Show catches him and slams him into the mat. Big Show then goes for a chokeslam but Angle rolls through and applies an ankle lock!

Big Show kicks his way out of the ankle lock, kicking Kurt Angle into the referee as he does. Angle then rolls out of the ring and grabs a steel chair again before jabbing it into Big Shows left knee. Kurt smashes the chair into Big Shows knee again before dropping some elbows. It’s advantage Angle now as he works away at Big Shows knee. Big Show gets to his feet and hits clotheslines and big boots. Angle sidesteps a boot and Big Show crotches himself on the top rope. Angle then hits the Angle slam but Big Show kicks out! Kurt grabs the tranquiliser gun from underneath the ring but Big Show grabs it off him and snaps it over his knee. Show then hits an inverted powerbomb and chokeslams Kurt off the top rope. Big Show hooks the leg and gets the three! Big Show beats Kurt Angle tonight!

Booker T (c) vs. John Cena – United States Championship Match

This is the second PPV match between these two men with John Cena having beaten Booker T at Summerslam. It’s technically the 5th match in a best of 5 series but it all comes down to this match. John Cena has a 0-1 record at No Mercy PPV’s whilst Booker T has a 0-2 record. There’s a shot of both men walking backstage before the match which gives this a big fight feel. The two men slug it out in the early going until Cena knocks down Booker with a couple of shoulder charges. Booker hits a drop toe told and Cena then clotheslines Booker out of the ring. Back in the ring and Booker T hits some chops and right hands. Cena hits some boots and a clothesline for a two count. Booker hits a spinebuster for a two count.

The United States Championship has only been defended once before at a No Mercy pay per view and that was at last years event when The Big Show beat Eddie Guerrero to win the title. Outside the ring Booker T throws John Cena into the ring steps. Cena then returns the favour before rolling Booker back into the ring. Booker drops Cena on the top rope and then hits him with a thrust kick for a two count. Booker T applies a sleeper which Cena gets out of and hits a cross body for a near fall. Booker T hits a hard Irish whip and then a suplex for a two count. Lots of lateral presses in this match. Booker T goes back to the sleeper but Cena gets out of it. Booker goes for a big kick but Cena sidesteps it and Booker lands on the top rope. Cena hits some big clotheslines and a flying shoulder tackle for a near fall.

Cena has the momentum and hits a bulldog and then the 5 knuckle shuffle for a two count. Cena goes for the FU but Booker nips down and hits the book end for a near fall. Booker grabs a steel chair but the referee talks him out of using it. Booker then goes for the scissors kick but Cena side-steps it. Cena hits the FU and hooks the leg for the three count! Cena wins the match and the United States Championship!

Charlie Haas, Rico & Miss Jackie vs. The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray & D-Von) & Dawn Marie

6 person filler between the two main events. I’m all for it though. The Dudley Boyz have a 2-1 record at No Mercy events, Dawn Marie has a 0-1 record and the babyface team make their No Mercy debuts tonight. D-Von and Charlie Haas kick off the match and Haas hits some arm drags for a near fall. D-Von hits a back body drop and Dawn Marie tags herself in. Dawn looks after Charlie but Haas tags in Miss Jackie. Miss Jackie looking for her first PPV victory tonight. She rips off Dawn Marie’s top and chokes her with it. Bubba Ray grabs Jackie’s hair and Marie then tags in Bubba Ray. Jackie tags in Rico who gives Bubba Ray a kiss! Bubba Ray thought it was Miss Jackie and he goes nuts. Bubba Ray tags in D-Von and Bubba goes marching to the back!

Rico rolls D-Von up a few times for a few near falls. Rico then hits a mule kick and goes to the top but Bubba Ray is back and crotches Rico on the top turnbuckle. D-Von lays in some boots and then an elbow drop for a two count. D-Von tags in Bubba Ray who is super angry. He throws Rico out of the ring where D-Von smashes him into the ring steps. Bubba Ray chokes Rico with some wrist tape but Rico hits him with a DDT. Bubba tags in D-Von and Rico tags in Charlie Haas! Haas hits a back body drop and then a dropkick to Bubba Ray. Haas hits a T-bone suplex to Bubba Ray and then a flying forearm to D-Von. Charlie gets distracted by Dawn Marie allowing D-Von to take the advantage. Rico tags in and hits a cross body off the top for a near fall.

Dawn Marie and Miss Jackie go at it with both women looking for their first PPV victory tonight. Dawn disposes of Miss Jackie and the Dudley Boyz then set up for the Wassup drop but Charlie knocks D-Von off the apron. Rico hits a thrust kick on Bubba Ray and then Jackie spears Dawn Marie. Haas comes off the top with an axe handle on D-Von and then Rico hits a moonsault of D-Von to pick up the victory! Rico, Charlie Haas and Miss Jackie win the match tonight! Entertaining enough.

There are clips throughout the night of The Undertaker winning the WWE Championship in the past. They’re building this up like he’ll win tonight.

John “Bradshaw” Layfield (c) vs. The Undertaker – Last Ride match for the WWE Championship

This is the second singles match between these two men on pay per view. Layfield won the previous match between the two by disqualified. Undertaker has a 1-3 record at No Mercy PPV’s whilst Bradshaw has a 1-2 record. The WWE Championship has only changed hands once in the previous 6 title matches at No Mercy events. It’s the third consecutive No Mercy pay per view in which Undertaker has received a WWE Championship match and the fourth overall. The two men get straight into it with Undertaker taking the early advantage. To win the match you have to throw your opponent into the hearse and drive them out of the arena. Undertaker drops an elbow and hits a headbutt. Undertaker then hits the old school clubbing blow off the top rope.

Undertaker hits a big boot but JBL gets out of the way of an elbow drop. Layfield then hits a thumb to the eye and some right hands and forearms, dropping Undertaker to the canvas. Undertaker hits a big chokeslam on JBL and then attempts to drag him into the hearse but JBL fights him off. Undertaker hits a legdrop on JBL on the apron and then rams JBL into the barricade. Undertaker then throws Layfield into the ring steps. JBL picks up the ring steps and smashes them into Undertakers face. JBL hits some big right hands and a boot on the outside. JBL then smashes the ring steps into Undertaker again in a painful looking shot. JBL has a heavily bruiser thigh, I’m not sure what caused that. The two men fight over by the hearse but Undertaker heads back to the ring. Back in the ring and Bradshaw goes up top before jumping off with a big shoulder tackle.

Layfield hits a swinging neckbreaker but Undertaker locks on a triangle choke hold. JBL fades out and his tapping means nothing. Undertaker lays into JBL on the outside until the champion reverses an Irish whip, sending Undertaker into the ring steps. JBL then sets up for a piledriver on the ring steps but Undertaker back body drops him down to the floor. Undertaker then clotheslines JBL into the crowd and lays into him with right hands. The Undertaker then hits JBL with a tombstone on the steel steps! The WWE Champion is bleeding from the face now and Undertaker continues to lay into him. JBL swings a chair and connects giving him some time. Layfield then smashes a monitor into his opponents face but Undertaker chokeslams him through the Spanish announce table.

Undertaker carries JBL up to the hearse but out comes Heidenreich! He bursts out of the car and attacks The Undertaker before smothering The Undertaker with chloroform and throwing The Undertaker in the hearse! Undertaker wakes up and gets out before fighting off Heidenreich. JBL then hits a clothesline from hell and both he and Heidenreich throw Undertaker into the hearse. The car drives off and the bell rings! John “Bradshaw” Layfield wins the match and retains the WWE Championship! An odd, unexpected ending but a win for JBL in any case.

Backstage we see that it was Paul Heyman driving the hearse! We then see Heidenreich drive a car straight into it!

And that was No Mercy 2004. 8 matches without a shocker on the card. The match I had the least expectation for kicked off the show and was a lot of fun actually. Eddie Guerrero is popular for all the right reasons at the moment and you can’t help but love to watch him cheat. He had to beat Luther Reigns and did which builds back some momentum for him following losses to JBL and Kurt Angle in recent months. Spike Dudley then retained his Cruiserweight Championship which was another right result. Spike has been great as the vindictive boss of The Dudley Boyz, the peak of his WWE career up to now I would say. Nunzio is another fun character and it’s nice to see somebody new in the title picture.

Billy Kidman beats Paul London in a match that could have gone either way. I really like the finish to this one and although I’m not buying Kidman as a heel currently, I like how messed up he came across at the end of this one. Paul London sold like a trooper and I’d like to see him in the Cruiserweight title picture before long. Kenzo and Rene retained their Tag Team Championships by cheating (arguably the fourth dastardly finish to a match out of 4 so far). Suzuki held on to the ropes to pin Mysterio and I think this’ll probably be the end of this feud. I’m not sure about the tag team division on Smackdown as the only competitors for the champions are heels (Dudley Boyz & Bashams) unless Charlie Haas and Rico get back into the mix but I think they may split up in the near future.

Big Show beats Kurt Angle in a fairly surprising result. I don’t mind the result because it gives Big Show some much-needed momentum, it’s just rare to see him win on pay per view. Kurt can bounce back from a loss like this no problems and what he did to Show with the tranqualiser gun gives him a lot of heat going forward. I think Big Show will be next up to challenge JBL. John Cena beats Booker T to bring the United States Championship full circle and put an end to this feud. I like John Cena as US champ so have no problems with him winning back the title. I hope Booker T moves on to something big after, maybe a feud with Eddie Guerrero or Undertaker. Or Big Show.

In 6 person tag team action Charlie Haas, Rico and Miss Jackie got the win over The Dudley Boyz and Dawn Marie. This seems like the right result but I actually want to see more storyline progression with Dawn Marie, Miss Jackie and Charlie Haas! So I hope this feud isn’t over, as terrible as it seems. The Dudley Boyz aren’t having a great time at the moment, losing to Haas and Rico whilst being led around by their runt of a brother. JBL is having a good time though and retains his title against The Undertaker. I certainly wasn’t expecting Heidenreich to pop out of the hearse. This will obviously lead to a feud between the two whilst JBL walk off into the sunset. A bizarre way to end the show but JBL once again out-smarts his opponent. I don’t care what you say, Layfield is a great champion. Overall this was the best Smackdown brand PPV thus far. There was nothing outstanding but nothing terrible either. Best PPV of 2004 so far.
