Extreme Rules is the name of the game as every match on tonights card will be held under some sort of gimmick. The show gets further away from being an ECW re-union show and more a show that encompasses the values of ECW. The WWE Championship is set to be defended as John Cena defends the title against The Great Khali. Cena beat Khali at Judgment Day last month but the referee did not spot Khali’s foot under the bottom rope when he tapped out. So Khali challenged Cena to a rematch under Falls Count Anywhere rules, a challenge Cena accepted. Since accepted the challenge Cena has fell at the hands of Khali multiple times. Can Cena beat the giant again?
Edge will be defending his World Heavyweight Championship against the man that won a number one contenders fatal four way match. Batista would win the match, beating Kane, Mark Henry and Finlay to get his rematch against Edge, this time inside of a steel cage. Somebody else who had to earn his way to a title rematch was Bobby Lashley who was forced to run the gauntlet to get another shot at the ECW Championship. Lashley would defeated Chris Masters, Viscera, Umaga and Shane McMahon and goes on to face Vince McMahon in a steet fight. McMahon has not made life easy for Lashley, putting him in handicap matches and even using Mark Henry to attack Lashley on Saturday Night’s Main Event.
The World Tag Team Championships will be defended tonight as The Hardy Boys put their titles on the line against The World’s Greatest Tag Team in a ladder match. Haas and Benjamin made the challenge to The Hardy Boys and as Matt and Jeff accepted it was visible how upset Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch were. This is certainly The Hardy Boys signature match but can Haas and Benjamin overcome them? Also from Raw, Randy Orton will take on the man that he has taken out in recent weeks, Rob Van Dam. Orton has gone as far as to punt Van Dam in the face, much like he did to Shawn Michaels but Michaels has not been seen since. Will RVD even be in a state to wrestle tonight?
It’ll be battle of the big men as Kane and Mark Henry go one on one. These two big men have been battling since Mark Henry returned to Smackdown. Henry took out Kane’s brother The Undertaker and Kane is looking for revenge. These two men will meet in a lumberjack match tonight. Also, the battle between the ECW Originals and The New Breed continues as CM Punk teams up with The Sandman and Tommy Dreamer to take on Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von and Matt Striker in a tables match. And we’ll also get a non-title pudding match between WWE Women’s Champion Melina and Candice Michelle.
In a dark match prior to the event Santino Marella defeated Chris Masters.
A video package kicks us off going through some of the gimmicks tonight before focusing on the John Cena/Great Khali match and the Edge/Batista match.
Jim Ross welcome us to the show, he’s joined by Jerry “The King” Lawler. Joey Styles and Tazz are ringside representing ECW as are Michael Cole and John “Bradshaw” Layfield, the voices of Smackdown.
Rob Van Dam vs. Randy Orton – Stretcher Match
This is the second PPV meeting between these two men, Randy Orton beat Rob Van Dam for the Intercontinental title at Armageddon 2003. Randy Orton wrestled at last years One Night stand event in a losing effort to Kurt Angle whilst Rob Van Dam main evented the 2006 edition, beating John Cena for the WWE Championship. Van Dam hits Randy with a cheap shot to kick off the match and then a spinning heel kick in the corner. RVD then hits some big right hands and a monkey flip sending Orton flying across the ring. Van Dam hits a legdrop on the apron in this Raw vs. ECW match. It continues to be the ECW man as he hits kicks and a legdrop, following them up with right hands on the canvas. Orton gets back into the match with a big right hand. Randy attempts an RKO but Van Dam kicks him in the head and then jumps up to the top but Van Dam slips and heads out of the ring to the outside.
Van Dam is selling concussion issues after he was punted in the head by Orton on Raw last week. Orton hits a couple of uppercuts and then rolls Van Dam back into the ring before taking him down with a big dropkick. Randy is always so slow and methodical with his attacks. He works a completely different pace to anybody else I’ve ever seen. He hits a knee drop on Van Dam and then tries to roll him onto a stretcher but RVD holds on to the ropes. Orton hits a neckbreaker powerbomb which I’ve never seen anyone use before. He then rolls RVD onto the stretcher but Rob rolls right off. Van Dam starts to fight back with right hands and then throws Orton into the ringpost. RVD then places Orton on the stretcher before going up to the apron and hitting a spinning legdrop! Orton rolls back into the ring and Van Dam hits him with a springboard legdrop, two clotheslines and then attempts rolling thunder but Orton springs up and hits him with a powerslam.
Van Dam hits a dropkick and then throws Orton onto the stretcher. It’s amazing that the opener for this show is a stretcher match. RVD goes back in the ring and then leaps out at Orton with a plancha but Orton moves out of the way and Van Dam smashes his leg on the empty stretcher. Orton is first up to his feet and he puts RVD on a stretcher, slowly pushing it to the line at the top of the entrance ramp but Van Dam gets off! Van Dam manages to punch Orton onto the stretcher and quickly push him over the line for the win! I’m shocked! I did not think RVD was winning this match. That came from nowhere. After the match Orton attacks Van Dam and punts his head again, sending RVD into the crowd! Randy lays Van Dam across the barricade and then DDT’s him into the mat on the outside, leaving the ECW legend laying. It’s a big win for Rob Van Dam tonight none the less.

CM Punk, The Sandman & Tommy Dreamer vs. Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von & Matt Striker – 6 man tag team tables match
The first team to put one of their opponents through a table will win this match. Tommy Dreamer is the only man in this match to have wrestled at a One Night Stand event before and he might be the only person tonight who has wrestled on all three One Night Stand shows. He’s lost at the last two events. Matt Striker is looking for his first PPV victory tonight, as is Marcus Cor Von. Cor Von and Tommy Dreamer start the match and Cor Von knocks Tommy down but misses with an elbow drop. There’s a bit of chain wrestling from the two men that ends with a stand off. Cor Von hits a double underhook suplex and tags in Elijah Burke. Burke hits lefts and rights on Dreamer and then a snapmare and kneedrop. Burke misses with a splash in the corner and Dreamer takes him down with a suplex. Dreamer tags The Sandman who hits a flapjack and Burke tags out to Matt Striker. Sandman hits a hiptoss and tags in CM Punk who hits knees and a bulldog.
CM Punk tags Tommy Dreamer who hits an elbow drop on Striker. Tommy and CM Punk give a homage to The Dudley Boyz as they ask each other to get the tables. Dreamer attempts to get tables from under the ring but Marcus Cor Von stops him. Punk hits a suicide dive on Cor Von and then a springboard clothesline on Burke. The Sandman lays into Matt Striker with a singapore cane as Tommy Dreamer gets a table out from under the ring. Elijah Burke and Marcus Cor Von save Matt Striker from going through a table. Burke lays into CM Punk in the ring and Burke throws Punk into Cor Von who hits him with a powerslam. Burke hits a nice elbow drop on Punk. Punk beat Burke at Judgment Day last month in what was the longest match of the night. Burke and Marcus double team CM Punk but Dreamer saves Punk from going through a table. Dreamer cleans house and Sandman pops Striker on the top rope but Striker shoves him out to the mat below.
Tommy Dreamer hits Matt Striker with a powerbomb and Punk hits Burke with an enzeguri. Marcus Cor Von then powerbombs CM Punk. Cor Von lays CM Punk on a table in the ring and Cor Von then heads to the top but Sandman hits him with a singapore cane! Striker drops Sandman on the steps and Dreamer hits Burke with a piledriver! Dreamer lays Burke on the table and CM Punk goes up top with Matt Striker before suplexing him through Elijah Burke and the table to win the match! Punk, Dreamer and Sandman win the match tonight.

The Hardy Boys (Matt & Jeff) (c) vs. The World’s Greatest Tag Team (Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas) – Ladder match for the World Tag Team Championships
This is a first time meeting between these two tag teams and it makes One Night Stand debuts for all four men. Nobody has wrestled as many PPV matches without actually main eventing a PPV as Matt and Jeff Hardy. All four men start explosively and Matt takes Shelton down with a bulldog. Matt and Jeff then hit a double suplex on Charlie Haas who is wearing long tights for a change. Double fistdrops onto Shelton but Haas takes both Hardys down with a clothesline. The challengers grab ladders, as do the Hardy Boys and there are four ladders in the ring. All four men are at a stand off with their ladders but Matt and Jeff drop theirs and dropkick Benjamin and Haas. Matt and Jeff whip Haas in a ladder and then sandwich him between two more. Jeff Hardy then hits poetry in motion on both men.
Jeff Hardy is wrestling on his 11th PPV consecutively which is much more than anybody else. He climbs a ladder but Charlie Haas pulls him back down. Haas climbs a ladder in the middle of the ring but Matt pulls him down with an electric chair drop. Matt and Jeff double team Shelton Benjamin and then both Hardys climb the ladder. Shelton puts an end to that by throwing a ladder at both men. Benjamin clotheslines Jeff and both he and Haas throw Matt Hardy onto a ladder. Benjamin powerslam Jeff and both members of the World’s Greatest Tag Team hit a modified monkey flip on Jeff into a ladder. Haas smashes Matt into a ladder and then climbs a ladder in the middle of the ring. Benjamin climbs the other side but Matt and Jeff pull them down. Haas throws Jeff into a ladder and Benjamin dropkicks a ladder into Matt Hardy. The World’s Greatest Tag Team set two ladders up in a seesaw but The Hardy Boys end up hiptossing Shelton Benjamin onto it and then throwing Haas onto it from the top.
The four men battle to the outside where Matt and Jeff grab two huge ladders. They lay one from the barricade to the ring and suplex Haas onto it. Matt then tries to suplex Benjamin from the ring to the ladder but Benjamin reverses it and suplexes Matt into the ring. Matt then back body drops Benjamin out onto the ladder! That looked painful. Matt lays Benjamin on the ladder on the outside and Jeff heads to the top but Charlie Haas hits a German suplex on Jeff from the top! Matt hits side affect on Haas and then climbs a ladder but the challengers push over the ladder. Benjamin hits a t-bone suplex on Jeff in the ring whilst Haas sets Matt up on a ladder on the outside. Benjamin climbs a ladder inside the ring and then jumps out at Matt on the outside! That was a version of the double team The World’s Greatest Tag Team have been using for years and it looked very painful for Shelton Benjamin. Charlie Haas then sets up a ladder inside the ring but it’s miles away.
Jeff Hardy climbs the other side of the ladder and suplexes Haas down to the mat below! Jeff climbs the ladder but Shelton springboards into the ring, completely botches it by missing the top rope but manages to kick the ladder which pushes it over with Jeff on. Shelton then rams the ladder into Jeff Hardy, pushing him out of the ring before setting up the ladder and climbing it but Matt Hardy pushes the ladder over. Matt hits a neckbreaker and then sets up two ladders next to each other before climbing one of them. Benjamin climbs the other ladder and the two men slug it out. Jeff Hardy and Charlie Haas climb the ladders and all four men slug it out but The World’s Greatest Tag Team push over the Hardy Boys ladder. Matt and Jeff land on their feet and push over the other ladder sending Benjamin out of the ring. Jeff hits a swanton bomb on Charlie Haas and Matt climbs the ladder and retrieves the belts! Matt and Jeff Hardy retain their World Tag Team Championships tonight!

Kane hits a couple of clotheslines in the corner before heading up top and hitting a clothesline. Kane then hits a chokeslam but in come Kenny Dykstra and Chavo Guerrero who attack Kane! Kane chokeslams Dykstra but that distraction is enough for Mark Henry to get up and apply a bearhug. Eventually Kane gives in and Mark Henry wins the match by way of bearhug! Not a great match but not terrible.

Vince McMahon (c) vs. Bobby Lashley – Street Fight for the ECW Championship
This is a first time singles match between these two men and One Night stand debuts for both. Vince is joined by Shane McMahon and Umaga unsurprisingly. Shane then lays into Lashley and throws him back into the ring where Vince and Shane hit him with lefts and rights. Bobby military presses Shane out of the ring and then hits Vince with some big right hands. Shane and Umaga both get involved and Lashley fights off both men. Backstage Santino and Maria are flirting with each other. Todd Grisham asks Maria her expert opinion on the pudding match between Melina and Candice. Maria gives an intelligent, unexpected answer. Candice then shows up and says she will beat Melina tonight. Candice wants a kiss from Santino for good luck but Maria lays one on her. Santino says that he loves America and Ron Simmons turns up to give us a DAMN.
Melina vs. Candice Michelle – Pudding match
This match is taking place in a paddling pool full of pudding near the entrance ramp. This is a first match between these two girls and as far as I can tell it is a non title match. It’s a One Night Stand debut for both girls. Candice throws Melina into the pool and the two girls go at it. The girls roll out of the pool and Candice spears Melina back into the pool. Lots more rolling about and Candice gets a near fall. You can barely tell which girl is which. Melina throws Candice back into the pool and locks on a headlock. Candice hits a DDT and then tries to drown Melina in the chocolate until Melina taps out! Candice Michelle wins the pudding match. Terrible. Un-rateable. Maria attempts to interview Candice after the match, Melina throws pudding at them so Maria jumps into the pool. They drag the referee in. Terrible. But a win for Candice Michelle.

And that was One Night Stand 2007. A fairly average feeling pay per view and a stop gap really under the draft that will be coming in a couple of weeks. The show did start well though with Rob Van Dam defeating Randy Orton. This result surprised me a lot, everything was set up for Randy Orton to win but there was a last minute swerve and Van Dam would win. I’m not sure whether this feud will continue as the two men are on different brands for the time being. Ithink the win would have benefitted Orton more as he would be a great fit to challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship next. It’s a win for RVD though and a surprising one at that. Good match.
CM Punk, Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman beat The New Breed and I think this match was designed to put CM Punk over. He’s definitely the star of this group (although I do like Burke too). Punk would put Striker through the table which was fine really. I’d like to see Punk main event ECW if he stays on the brand. Fun match. The match of the night was between The Hardy Boys and The World’s Greatest Tag Team. These are two very entertaining teams in the ring and they pulled no punches in this one. It’s difficult to create spots that haven’t been seen before but Benjamin and Haas re-creating their trademark double team move using the ladder was definitely the spot of the night. Matt and Jeff retained their tag team titlesand I think they’ll go back to feuding with Cade and Murdoch.
Kane and Mark Henry took part in a forgettable match. Mark Henry won the match as The World’s Strongest Push continues. I can’t really get behind this push too much but we’ll see where it goes. Henry winning with a bear hug is weak, I hate that finish. The match was fun with the lumberjacks though and I especially liked that they were too scared to go near Kane and Henry in the beginning. Mark Henry wins though and I doubt this feud will continue. Bobby Lashley won the ECW Championship back in what was essentially a handicap match. I’m fine with Lashley winning the title back, he’s a good choise for the title. I wouldn’t mind seeing someone like Mark Henry getting drafted to ECW to challenge Lashley for the belt. I guess this will be the end of Vince McMahons run with ECW, it’s a good time to end it wit hthe draft coming up. Maybe a new Raw General Manager will come in. Decent match.
Candice Michelle beat Melina in a pudding match, it was terrible. Edge beat Batista in a fairly average cage match. That is back to back clean wins for Edge over Batista. Is Batista getting buried for osme reason? Edge has looked strong in this feud so far and it’s been a good feud between two main eventers but maybe they need to take a break from it and build Batista back up to the title. I’m sure Smackdown will be freshened up in the draft with new opponents coming in for Edge. The brand is definitely lacking top babyfaces at the moment. Then in the main event John Cena retained his WWE title against The Great Khali. That’s two clean wins for Cena now so this feud will be over. This match was all about the spot at the end of the match which was good fun and Cena looked impressive getting Khali up in his shoulders like that. Cena wins in a pretty bad match. Who’s next?
