The biggest party of the summer returns and there are seven big matches tonight. The WWE Championship is set to be defended and champion John Cena was given the opportunity to pick his opponent. Cena chose Daniel Bryan whose popularity has soared in recent months. Vince McMahon is somebody not happy with John Cena’s choice and has since tried to make Daniel Bryan more corporate by offering to give him a haircut and shave off his beard. Brad Maddox would serve as a special guest referee in a match between Daniel Bryan and Wade Barrett and Maddox would fast-count Barretts pinfall to give him the victory. Maddox offered to be the special guest referee in the Summerslam main event but Triple H would pedigree Maddox and put himself as the special guest referee.
The World Heavyweight Championship is the only other title set to be defended on the main show as Alberto Del Rio defends against Christian. Christian won a triple threat match against Randy Orton and Rob Van Dam to earn the title match. Christian has since beaten Del Rio twice in non-title matches and a third victory tonight will crown him as the new champion. Another big match tonight is between Brock Lesnar and CM Punk. Paul Heyman turned his back on CM Punk last month at Money In The Bank and Lesnar attacked CM Punk on the Raw after that show. CM Punk went on to challenge Lesnar to a match at Summerslam which Paul Heyman accepted on behalf of his client. Cody Rhodes will also have the opportunity to get his hands on the man that stopped him from winning Money In The Bank, his former friend Damien Sandow. Rhodes has since thrown Sandow’s briefcase into the Gulf Of Mexico leading to Sandow unveiling his own leather briefcase.
Bray Wyatt made his debut a few weeks ago and attacked Kane, ruling him out of the Money In The Bank ladder match. Kane gets a match with Bray Wyatt tonight, a match that Kane has made a “Ring of fire” match. The ring will be surrounded by fire, like an inferno match, but that is simply to keep Erick Rowan and Luke Harper out of the match. We’ll also have a mixed tag team match as AJ Lee and Big E take on Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn in a rivalry that is developed over the last few months. Dolph split up with AJ after Money In The Bank and that led to repeated attacks from Big E. Also tonight Natalya will go one on one with Brie Bella following a rivalry that has mostly taken place on new reality programme Total Divas.
On the pre-show Rob Van Dam defeated Dean Ambrose by disqualification in their match for the United States Championship.
The show kicks off the the host for the evening, The Miz coming out, welcoming everybody to the show and running down the two main events of CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar and the WWE Championship match of John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan with Triple H serving as special guest referee. The Miz is interrupted by Fandango and Summer Rae who dance about.
There’s a video package hyping up the event and specifically the WWE Championship match and The Best vs. The Beast. The music in the background of this VT will later be used as Akira Tozawa’s theme music.
Lilian Garcia introduces newcomer Jojo to sing America The Beautiful.
Kane vs. Bray Wyatt – Ring Of Fire match
So this is basically an inferno match but instead of having to set your opponent on fire, the flames are there to keep people out. It’s a PPV debut for Bray Wyatt (who used to wrestle as Husky Harris). Kane is 7-2-1 at Summerslam events so it’s not a bad event for him, having only lost 2 of his 10 prior matches. The bell rings and the flames are ignited. Luke Harper and Erick Rowan watch from the outside and Kane goes right to work on Wyatt with lefts and rights. Kane hits a clothesline but Bray takes the advantage with a running boot and a couple of headbutts. Kane counters a suplex with one of his own and then hits a low dropkick. Wyatt actually avoided it and then hits a splash in the corner and a cross body. Wyatt lays in some right hands and counters a chokeslam before running into a big boot. Kane hits an Irish whip and a splash in the corner and then a sidewalk slam. There’s an eerie red light over the ring.
Wyatt hits a reverse elbow and knocks Kane down. He then asks for something and Luke Harper tries to hand him a kendo stick but the stick catches on fire before it can get to Wyatt. Kane hits a chokeslam as Harper and Rowan try but fail to get into the ring. Kane hits another chokeslam and then pulls Bray Wyatt up to his feet and hits another chokeslam. Kane motions for a chokeslam but Harper and Rowan put a sheet over the flames and get in the ring. Harper and Rowan attack Kane, taking him down. The crowd chant for Undertaker. Harper hits a big clothesline on Kane and Rowan follows it up with a splash. They then help Wyatt up to his knees and bring Kane to him. Wyatt hits a spinning DDT and hooks the leg for the three! After the match The Wyatt Family drop the ring steps on Kane’s head. I mean, they clearly didn’t, they even angled it so the big hole in the middle would protect Kane. They then carry Kane to the back. Bray Wyatt wins in his debut tonight. A strange match but I liked the uniqueness.

We go to the kick-ff panel with Josh Mathews joined by Booker T, Shawn Michaels and Vickie Guerrero. Good panel to be fair. Booker says that the Wyatt Family have flipped the switch, Michaels is impressed with Wyatt from a business point of view whilst Vickie Guerrero is impressed with Brad Maddox’s booking.
We’re shown some interview from Paul Heyman that was on the kick-off panel. Basically Heyman doing what he does best. He says we will never see CM Punk again. He also announces that both parties have agreed to making tonight’s match no disqualification.
Cody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow
This is a first time PPV match between these two former friends. Cody is 0-1 at Summerslam whilst Sandow makes his Summerslam debut tonight. Damien Sandow gets on the mic before the match and says that Rhodes was always his sidekick and tonight he sends him back to the circus he came from. Cody no longer has a moustache. The bell rings and the two men go right at it. Rhodes hits a chop and some right hands and then a big back body drop. Rhodes hits a front-first suplex for the first near fall of the night. Sandow throws Rhodes out to the apron and then sweeps him to the mat below. Sandow then rams Rhodes into the ring apron before rolling him back into the ring and hitting a couple of kidney punches. Sandow hits a suplex for a two count and then hits some knees to the back. Sandow then applies a surfboard stretch but Rhodes backs Sandow into the corner to break the hold.
Rhodes looks for cross-Rhodes but Sandow counters and hits a side Russian leg sweep and the elbow of disdain for a near fall. Sandow hits some knees to the back and then locks on the move Edge used to call Edge-o-cution. Sandow breaks the submission hold and hops up to the middle rope but Cody gets up, hits some headbutts and then a muscle buster for a near fall. Cody hits a clothesline, reverse elbow and a right hand before hitting an uppercut reminiscent of his brother Goldust. Rhodes then hits a springboard missile dropkick and a kick to the gut like Hardcore Holly used to. Sandow hits a neckbreaker for a two count. Rhodes counters a sunset flip for a near fall and then hits a disaster kick for another near fall. Sandow avoids a shoulder charge in the corner and rolls up Rhodes for a two count. Rhodes then hits Cross-Rhodes and hooks the leg for the three! Cody Rhodes wins the match! A really solid match between these two.

And that was Summerslam 2013. I have to say, I really enjoyed that show. It felt like the best PPV that WWE have put on in a long time. The opening match was really entertaining, it wasn’t a wrestling classic but I enjoyed the match. It told a really good story that culminated with Luke Harper and Erick Rowan getting into the ring and helping Bray Wyatt win. It was the right result and I think they need to keep Bray Wyatt winning to keep up the mystique. Kane get’s carried to the back at the end and it would be cool to see him join The Wyatt Family. Cody Rhodes then beat Damien Sandow in a good match between these tow former friends. It pretty much puts an end to the feud unless Sandow gets his heat back this week and it leads to a gimmick match down the line. I’d also like to see Rhodes beat Sandow for the Money In The Bank briefcase but we’ll have to see if this is the end.
Alberto Del Rio beat Christian in one of the more predictable matches on the card to retain the World Heavyweight Championship. I didn’t really give Christian a chance. Christian seemed like a strange choice to have in this match but they do have chemistry and they put on a good match. With no roster split at the moment there are plenty of contenders for Del Rio especially as the World Heavyweight Championship is a secondary title at the moment. Natalya then beat Brie Bella in a match that wasn’t a classic but was actually better than I thought it would be. It’s nice to have two matches involving Divas. Natalya wins though and you get the impression that this is leading up to a six diva tag team match with Natalya, Naomi and Cameron against The Bella Twins and Eva Marie.
Brock Lesnar beat CM Punk in a match that I loved. These two men had a lot of chemistry and fair play to Lesnar, he sold a lot from Punk to the extent that you believed Punk could have won the match. Brock won, with a lot of help from Paul Heyman and I think the feud between Punk and Heyman is far from over. With Lesnar only working part time it means that we might not get this match again but it’ll be interesting to see where the rivalry between Punk and Heyman goes. Great match tonight. Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn beat AJ Lee and Big E in their tag team match. This match wasn’t great but it did the job. I like how they went down the mixed tag team match route and it might put an end to these intertwined rivalries. Which is why it made sense that Ziggler and Kaitlyn won. Maybe it’ll lead to Kaitlyn getting another title match against AJ though.
And in the main event John Cena and Daniel Bryan put on a fantastic match that led to Daniel Bryan winning the WWE Championship. It was really good fun and I think Cena would have surprised people with his performance in this match. There was a huge pop and celebration when Daniel Bryan won the match but that did not last long. Out came Randy Orton and between him and Triple H, they screwed over Bryan and cost him the match. What a way to cash in the Money In The Bank briefcase. It made Randy Orton the hottest heel in the business instantly. There’s a different feel to things at the moment, I think this could lead to a really good angle. It capped off a really enjoyable show from top to bottom. Second best Summerslam of all time in my opinion, narrowly behind 2002.
