Battleground returns following a disappointing outing last year. The main event for this year is a fatal four way match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Triple H made the announcement after telling John Cena the night after Money In The Bank that he could do things the easy way or the hard way. Cena chose the hard way and so Triple H announced that at Battleground he would be defending his title against Randy Orton, Kane and Roman Reigns. The authority look to work together in the match but cracks are showing between Randy Orton and Kane. John Cena has tried to get Roman Reigns on his side but it will be every man for himself tonight.

The Intercontinental Championship has been vacated due to the injury suffered by champion Bad News Barrett. A battle royal will determine a new champion tonight and features the likes of Sheamus, Dolph Ziggler, Alberto Del Rio, The Great Khali, The Miz, Ryback, Curtis Axel, Kofi Kingston and Cesaro. The WWE Tag Team Championships will be on the line tonight as The Usos defend against Luke Harper and Erick Rowan again. Harper and Rowan have beaten The Usos in a non-title match to earn a title shot but this time it’ll be a 2 out of 3 falls match to decide it between the two teams.

The other title to be defended tonight is the WWE Divas Championship. AJ Lee returned to Raw for the first time since the night after Wrestlemania, challenged Paige and beat him to regain the title. Since then AJ and Paige have been “frenemies” attempting to be friends whilst enemies. Paige gets her rematch for the title tonight. Also tonight Rusev goes one on one with a Real American in Jack Swagger. Swagger and Zeb Colter have been defending the USA as of late and we all know their opinions on immigrants. Jack Swagger looks to be the man to stop Rusev tonight.

A few weeks age we were promised a cross-platform star’s return to the WWE. The Miz was the man to make his entrance but he had actually stole the thunder of Chris Jericho! Jericho would come out and dispose of Miz but then found himself surrounded by The Wyatt Family. Tonight Chris Jericho goes one on one with Bray Wyatt. Also tonight we will finally get to see Dean Ambrose go up against the man who turned his back on The Shield, Mr Money In The Bank Seth Rollins. Ambrose has wanted this match for a long time and he gets to extract revenge tonight.

In Battleground kick-off matches Adam Rose beat Fandango and Cameron upset Naomi.

A video package kicks us off promoting tonight’s main event.

Michael Cole welcomes us to Tampa Bay for Battleground.

The Usos (Jimmy & Jey) vs. Luke Harper & Erick Rowan – 2 out of 3 falls match for the WWE Tag Team Championships

This is a second PPV match between these two teams. The Usos beat Harper and Rowan 3 weeks ago at Money In The Bank. Both teams make their Battleground in-ring debut. Jey Uso starts the match against Erick Rowan and Jey slaps the mask off Rowans face! Erick powers back with a shoulder charge and then hits the Uso with clubbing blows before tagging in Luke Harper. Jey dropkicks Harper out of the ring and when Rowan tries to get involved, The Usos dispose of him. Harper re-enters the ring and powers Jey into the corner. Harper throws Jey out of the ring under the bottom rope and Jey caught the rope as he fell out then. He manages to get back into the ring and Harper hits a suplex. Harper tags Rowan back in and he hits a powerslam for the first near fall of the night. Rowan applies a chinlock and then tags in Luke Harper who applies a gator roll and then a chinlock of his own. Jey Uso breaks the chinlock with a side suplex and then tags in Jimmy Uso for the first time. Harper drops Jimmy with a big boot and pins him for the three! That didn’t last long for Jimmy. Harper and Rowan win the first fall.

The second fall gets under way and Harper immediately hits Jimmy with a splash in the corner for a two count. Harper tags in Rowan who hits a headbutt and a splash for a two count. Rowan applies a vice grip which Jimmy manages to fight out of. Jimmy looks for a powerslam but Rowan just lands on top of him. Rowan tags in Harper who steps all over Jimmy and then hits him with a couple of European uppercuts. Jimmy fights back with right hands but Harper drops him with a right of his own. Jimmy counters a side suplex and tags in Jey who rolls Harper up for the three! The Usos win the second fall.

Harper and Rowan go right to work on Jey Uso before they’re supposed to. Harpers shoulder didn’t look down during that last pinfall. The third fall gets underway and Rowan hits a fallaway slam on Jey for a two count. Rowan tags in Harper who slingshots Jey into the middle rope for a two count. Harper hits a big chop and drops Jey with a right hand. Harper tags in Rowan who hits a hard Irish whip but Jey avoids a shoulder charge. Luke Harper tags himself in but misses with a running boot in the corner. Jey tags in Jimmy who flies out at Harper. Jimmy low-bridges Rowan who tries to get involved and then dives out at him too. Jimmy runs along the barricade and takes out Harper before rolling him back into the ring, heading up top and hitting a cross body for a two count. Jimmy looks for a Samoan drop but Harper slips down. Jimmy Uso hits an enzeguri and then the running butt splash in the corner.

Jimmy tags himself in and goes up as well but Rowan superplexes both Usos down to the mat!

Rowan pins Jimmy who kicks out at 2. Rowan tags in Luke Harper and the Wyatt Family looks for a double teams. Jey Uso breaks it up and he and Rowan fight to the outside. Jimmy hits a superkick on Harper but Harper fires back with a spinning clothesline. Harper hooks the leg but Jey breaks it up. Harper disposes of Jey but turns around into a superkick from Jimmy. Jimmy tags in Jey and The Usos hit double superkicks on Harper. They hit double superkicks on Rowan and Jey tags in Jimmy. Both Usos then go up top and hit a double splash on Harper! Jimmy covers Harper and gets the three! The Usos win the match and retain their WWE Tag Team Championships tonight! A great way to open the show. The first two falls were pretty slow but the third fall really picked up.

There’s a video package next showing the fallout between Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose.

Tom Phillips is backstage with Seth Rollins. Rollins is smiling because tonight is the night he puts a dagger in the heart of Ambrose for good. Rollins compares Ambrose to a cockroach. Seth says that once he beats Ambrose he will be watching the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match. Dean Ambrose then shows up and attacks Rollins. The two men get into a scuffle backstage until agents like Jamie Noble and Finlay break it up. Triple H shows up and tells the agents to kick him out of the arena.

AJ Lee (c) vs. Paige – WWE Divas Championship

This is a first time PPV match between these two girls. AJ Lee beat Brie Bella at Battleground last year. This is technically a rubber match as each girls have beaten the other on Raw once before. both girls have exceptional PPV records. AJ has won 7 of her 10 PPV matches whilst Paige has won all 3 of hers. A “CM Punk” chant breaks out as the bell rings. Paige knees AJ in the gut but AJ rolls Paige up for a one count. Paige reverses the cover for a one count and then gets the first decent shot in with a kick to the face for a two count. Paige hits a headbutt and then stomps away at AJ. Paige hits a powerslam for a two count and then lays in some knees. Paige applies a chinlock and then transitions into a surfboard. AJ gets out of it but Paige knocks her down with a clothesline for a two count. Paige pleads with Paige to do better which is weird. AJ then hits a tornado DDT. Both girls go to the outside where Paige throws AJ into the barricade.

Back in the ring and Paige heads to the top but AJ goes up with her. Paige hits a sloppy looking sunset flip for a two count. AJ hits some boots to the face and then looks for a cross body but Paige catches her. AJ then manages to lock on the black widow but Paige fights out of it. Randy Orton is backstage in a red-lit room looking for Kane. Kane appears and Randy wants to make sure they are on the same page so that John Cena or Roman Reigns don’t leave with the WWE World Heavyweight championship tonight. Kane assures Orton that the winner is standing right there.

Michael Cole throws to the kick-off panel led by Renee Young. She’s joined by Booker T, Christian and Alex Riley. Riley predicts Roman Reigns to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tonight. Christian also back Roman Reigns whilst Booker T backs Randy Orton.

We’re shown some footage from Zeb Colters’ exchange with Lana from Raw last week. It all broke down and ended with Jack Swagger locking the Patriot Lock on Rusev until the Bulgarian retreated.

Jack Swagger vs. Rusev

This is a first time PPV match between these two men. Jack Swagger wrestled at Battleground last year, teaming with Cesaro and beating Santino and The Great Khali. Before the match Lana gets on the mic before the match and puts down Americans. Zeb grabs the mic and starts to talk but Lana slaps him. Rusev and Swagger then go at it and Swagger clears the ring of Rusev. The bell rings and Swagger hits the first takedown, looking for the Patriot Lock but Rusev rolls out of the ring. Rusev gets back into the ring and hits a kick and a right hand. He then kicks down Swagger in the corner and hits him with right hands. Swagger fires back with some rights of his own and then looks to lock on the Patriot Lock again but Rusev rolls out of the ring again. Swagger follows Rusev and smashes him off the ring apron before rolling him back into the ring. Swagger then hits a splash in the corner and hits Rusev with knees.

Swagger bounces off the ropes but Rusev follows, splashes him and then hits a fallaway slam. Rusev lays in the boots and then applies a nerve hold. Rusev breaks the hold and then hits kicks.Rusev gouges the eyes of the Real American. Rusev has a similar build to Ted Arcidi. We’re told that Triple H has tweeted saying that Dean Ambrose will not return tonight. Swagger stomps on Rusev barefoot but Rusev then back body drops Swagger out of the ring. Swagger looks to get back into the ring but Rusev keeps hammering him back out. Zeb colter motivates Swagger who drops Rusev on the top rope and then hits a clothesline. The referee continues to count them out but Rusev gets in at 9 and Swagger gets counted out! Rusev wins by count out tonight. Decent enough match but you get the impression that this rivalry is not over. After the match Rusev locks the accolade on.

Goldust and Stardust are backstage talking absolute rubbish. Pretty entertaining though.

Seth Rollins is out next. We know Dean Ambrose has been thrown out of the building, will the match go ahead? Seth tells Justin Roberts to announce him as the winner. Roberts obliges and Rollins music hits.  Rollins celebrates. Interesting that this match was announced really late, I don’t think that was by accident. Dean Ambrose then shows up and attacks Rollins, throwing him from one barricade to another. They then fight into the crowd and then back to ringside. Where is security? Oh they finally show up and break it all up. Triple H then comes out and tells them to kick Dean Ambrose out. Half a dozen men literally carry Ambrose out. Rollins dives on to them. Triple H then raises Seth Rollins hand.

There’s a video package next showing the recent history between Chris Jericho and Bray Wyatt.

Chris Jericho vs. Bray Wyatt

This is a first time match between these two men. Bray Wyatt beat Kofi Kingston at Battleground last year whilst Jericho makes his Battleground debut tonight. Bray Wyatt is joined by the rest of the Wyatt Family. Jericho tips over the rocking chair on his way to the ring which I found pretty funny. Bray Wyatt has a pretty sick black eye. Jericho forces Wyatt into the corner in the early going and Wyatt just laughs in his face. Bray then forces Jericho to the mat with kicks and right hands. Jericho fires back with some chops and a slap to the face. That just fires Wyatt up who takes Jericho down with right hands. Jericho hits a reverse elbow and then chokes Wyatt on the middle rope. Jericho hits another couple of  chops and then an Irish whip but Wyatt flies out of the corner with a clothesline. Bray hits a reverse elbow for the first pinfall of the match. Wyatt looks for a suplex but Jericho counters and takes Wyatt down, looking for a Walls Of Jericho. Rowan and Harper get up on the apron which distracts Jericho and allows Wyatt to hit him with an uppercut.

Jericho forces Wyatt out of the ring and then goes up top and hits all three members of The Wyatt Family with a cross body. Jericho rolls Wyatt back into the ring but Harper grabs Jericho’s foot as he tries to get back in. The referee then sends Harper and Rowan to the back! Wyatt blasts Chris Jericho off the apron and then rolls him back into the ring, covering him for a two count. Jericho avoids a shoulder charge in the corner and tries to take Wyatt down but Bray throws him out to the apron. Jericho then goes up top and hits a double axe handle to take the big man down. Wyatt gets back into it with a gutbuster and then hits a clothesline. Wyatt looks for a senton but Jericho gets his knees up. Jericho hits an enzeguri for a two count. Jericho heads to the top but Wyatt goes up with him and the two men slug it out. Wyatt then hits a top rope jawbreaker for a near fall.

Jericho hits a bulldog and looks for a lionsault but Wyatt gets his knees up. Wyatt then walks around upside down like a spider before hitting Jericho with a urunage for a near fall. Wyatt hits a splash in the corner and then looks for a second but Jericho hits him with an forearm shot and then hits Wyatt into a turnbuckle. Wyatt has only lost two pay per view matches ever and they were both to John Cena. Wyatt then hits a DDT on Jericho on the apron of the ring for a two count. Jericho looks for Sister Abigail but Jericho counters and tries to lock on the Walls Of Jericho. Wyatt blocks and hits a cross body for a near fall. Jericho hits a codebreaker out of nowhere and hooks the leg for the three! Chris Jericho beats Bray Wyatt tonight. Not sure I like that result but Jericho wins and JBL calls it an upset.

Rating: 6/10

Seth Rollins is shown backstage leaving the arena. He has two security guards but tells them to go. I think we know what’s going to happen here. Rollins looks around and as he turns his back Ambrose climbs out of the boot of a car. Ambrose and Rollins fight over a car until Rollins can get in it and drive away.

Big E vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Cesaro vs. R-Truth vs. Ryback vs. Curtis Axel vs. Zack Ryder vs. Titus O’Neil vs. Damien Sandow vs. Heath Slater vs. Diego vs. Sin Cara vs. Xavier Woods vs. The Great Khali vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Bo Dallas vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. The Miz vs. Sheamus – Battleground Battle Royal for the vacant Intercontinental Championship

Well I make this a 19 man battle royal. Alberto Del Rio, Cesaro and Curtis Axel are all 1-0 at Battleground events whilst The Great Khali, R-Truth, Kofi Kingston and Ryback are all 0-1. Pretty sure the likes of Goldust, Stardust and Rob Van Dam were advertised for this match but are not in it. Bad News Barrett comes out and has Bad News for the winner. Like old people that retire to Florida it will be great at first but then the inevitable happens. The Great Khali stands in the middle and the other 18 men go for him but he fights them all off. He tries to chop everyone away and manages to fight them all off. The Great Khali then eliminates Xavier Woods and Zack Ryder. Sheamus hits Khali with a brogue kick and then half the field eliminate The Great Khali. Bo Dallas eliminates Sin Cara. We’re told that only 5 men in this match have held the Intercontinental Championship before. Curtis Axel, Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler, Big E off the top of my heads. Ryback eliminates R-Truth. Curtis Axel was eliminated by someone too.

Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio go at it in one corner whilst Diego and Damien Sandow also go at it. Diego eliminates Damien Sandow. Bo Dallas and Titus O’Neil go at it. Ryback eliminates Diego. Kofi has Cesaro teetering on the ropes. I can see Heath Slater trying to get Sheamus’ attention. Ryback powerslams Bo Dallas. Ryback and Sheamus are the only two men standing now. They face off and Sheamus brogue kicks Ryback, eliminating him from the match. Miz tries to capitalise on Sheamus but can’t eliminate him. Miz then rolls under the bottom rope. Heath Slater and Bo Dallas go at it. Big E lays into Sheamus. Alberto Del Rio and Cesaro are in one corner. Titus O’Neil tosses Sheamus. Bo Dallas then eliminates Titus O’Neil from the match. Cesaro uppercuts Kofi. Kofi back body drops Cesaro on to the apron and looks for trouble in paradise but Cesaro ducks. Cesaro gets back into the ring but Kofi dropkicks him. Del Rio hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker on Ziggler.

Dolph Ziggler dropkicks Alberto Del Rio which sends him out to the apron. Del Rio then locks a cross arm breaker on Ziggler and tries to pull him over the top rope but can’t. Ziggler drops Del Rio on the top rope to eliminate him from the match. Miz fails to eliminate Ziggler. Big E then hits Miz with a splash and Miz falls out of the ring under the bottom rope. Cesaro belly to belly suplexes Big E to eliminate him from the match. Cesaro then tries to eliminate Kofi but Kofi lands on Big E’s shoulders! Cesaro suplexes Kofi off Big E’s shoulders and back into the ring. Kofi looks for a monkey flip on Cesaro but Cesaro counters. Cesaro then suplexes Kingston over the top and out of the match. Heath Slater then eliminates Cesaro!

We’re down to Sheamus, Heath Slater, Dolph Ziggler and Bo Dallas. Sheamus eliminates Heath Slater with a brogue kick. Sheamus throws Bo Dallas on to the apron and hits him with some clubbing blows to the chest. Dolph Ziggler eliminates Bo Dallas with a dropkick. We’ve just got Sheamus and Dolph Ziggler left in the ring. The two men slug it out and Sheamus looks for a powerbomb but Ziggler counters with a sunset flip. Pretty nasty fall there for both men. Ziggler avoids a brogue kick but Sheamus catapults Ziggler on to the apron. Sheamus runs at Ziggler but Dolph gets back into the ring and clotheslines Sheamus out on to the apron. Sheamus looks to hit a shoulder charge back in but Dolph hits him with a superkick. Ziggler thinks he’s won but The Miz gets back into the ring and throws Ziggler out to win the match! The Mis is the new Intercontinental Champion! A fun battle royal.

There’s a video package next for the main event.

John Cena (c) vs. Roman Reigns vs. Kane vs. Randy Orton – Fatal four way match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

All four of these men look for their first win on a Battleground pay per view. Roman Reigns lost last year in tag team action whilst Randy Orton wrestled to a no-contest with Daniel Bryan in the main event. The bell rings and Cena and Orton pair off whilst Kane and Roman Reigns go at it. Orton disposes of Cena and helps Kane, double teaming Reigns. Cena gets involved and hits Orton with a fishermans suplex. Kane breaks up the cover and then takes Roman to the outside, smashing him off the ringpost. Orton stomps down Cena whilst Kane goes after Reigns on the outside.

Cena fights back against Orton but Kane helps Randy out. Kane and Orton double team Cena. Orton is in blue trunks tonight which is unusual for him. Kane hits Cena with a big boot and Orton pins Cena for a two count. Roman Reigns tries to get in the ring but Kane fight him back to the outside. Reigns then throws Kane into the ringpost. Inside the ring and Cena hits two shoulder charges on Orton and a side slam before hitting the five knuckle shuffle. Cena and Reigns then square off but before they can get into it Kane sits up. Cena and Reigns stomp down Kane. Orton hits Reigns with a backbreaker. Kane big boots Randy Orton and pins him for a two count. Reigns hits Kane with a Samoan drop for a two count. Orton takes some shots at Reigns and then takes him down and locks on a half crab! Reigns powers out and locks on a half crab of his own! John Cena then locks the STF on Randy Orton at the same time! Kane breaks it all up. Cena hits Kane with an attitude adjustment but Kane rolls out of the ring. Cena then locks the STF on Orton! Orton tries to get to the bottom rope but Cena drags him back to the middle of the ring and locks the STF back on.

Roman Reigns stops Randy Orton from tapping. He drags Orton out of the ring and throws him over the announce table! Cena and Reigns are then left alone in the ring. The two men slug it out with cheers for Reigns and boo’s for Cena. Reigns hits Cena with a couple of clotheslines but Cena ducks a third a looks to lock on the STF but Reigns kicks him away. Roman hits a Samoan drop on Cena and then motions for a superman punch. Cena ducks it and hits a sideslam but when he attempts the five knuckle shuffle Reigns leaps up and hits a superman punch! Cena then hits an attitude adjustment on Orton, on top of Kane! Cena pins Kane and gets the three! John Cena retains the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tonight! A good match between these four.

Rating: 7.25/10

And that was Battleground 2014. Much improved on last years show. The opener was a great match. Two tag teams with a lot of chemistry. I could watch these four guys fight each other all day long. The first two falls were a slow pace with Rowan and Harper setting the pace but the third fall really picked up. I liked how the first two falls weren’t decisive and were essentially won with roll-ups and fairly quickly. This meant the teams still had a lot to offer in the third and final fall. The Usos won and I’m assuming that’ll put an end to this feud. I don’t know who will be next to step up to The Usos though. It looked like Ambrose and Rollins were supposed to be next but after a backstage brawl it meant that we Paige and AJ instead. AJ beats Paige cleanly with a shining wizard which essentially puts Paige out of the title picture. But there’s a lot of momentum with these two girls at the moment so I don’t think we’ve seen the end of this story yet. Ok match but I think they’ve got a much better match in them.

Jack Swagger and Rusev were up next. This rivalry makes a lot of sense but Swagger is a heel I think so I’m not sure if we’re supposed to be cheering him. Rusev won by count out which means that this feud is definitely not over. There would be no need to protect Swagger. I reckon this is leading to a flag match, it’s how I’d book it anyway. Chris Jericho and Bray Wyatt were up next and I was surprised to see Jericho win this one. I’d have preferred to see Wyatt win but maybe this is leading to another match down the line. Wyatt will want revenge. Maybe we’ll get a gimmick match at Summerslam. Decent match between these two.

Then came the battle royal. We were promised over 20 participants but got 19. I wasn’t a huge fan of Miz hiding for most of the match and then eliminating Sheamus at the end to win it. But I also wouldn’t have been a fan of sheamus winning. I think I’d have liked this match to make someone new like Heath Slater. It was a good battle royal though and Miz will make a good heel champion. Then in the main event John Cena pinned Kane to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Nothing too much to say about this, it was a solid main event. No real storyline development except the falling out between Randy Orton and Kane. I think we’ll get Randy Orton and Roman Reigns at Summerslam but I’m not sure where it leaves John Cena. We’ll find out soon.

Overall Rating: 59.58/100 (ranked joint 125 out of 304)

Match Of The Night: John Cena vs. Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton vs. Kane
Worst Match Of The Night: AJ Lee vs. Paige
Surprise Of The Night: Chris Jericho beats Bray Wyatt
Worst Booking Of The Night: Chris Jericho beats Bray Wyatt
Superstar Of The Night: John Cena
Battleground 2014 Will Be Remembered For: Probably won’t be remembered.
