The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Big E) (c) vs. Lucha House Party (Lince Dorado & Gran Metalik) vs. The Miz & John Morrison vs. The Forgotten Sons (Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler) – Fatal four way match for the Smackdown Tag Team Championships

Background: On the April 17 episode of SmackDown, The New Day’s Big E defeated Jey Uso (representing The Usos) and defending co-champion The Miz (representing himself and John Morrison) in a triple threat match to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championship for The New Day. The following week, Lucha House Party (Lince Dorado and Gran Metalik) came out to challenge New Day but were interrupted by Miz and John Morrison, who also challenged The New Day. The Forgotten Sons (Steve Cutler, Jaxson Ryker, and Wesley Blake) then made their SmackDown debut, stating they would be taking over the brand’s tag team division before attacking New Day. The following week, The Forgotten Sons (Cutler and Blake) defeated The New Day (Big E and Kofi Kingston) in a non-title match where Miz and Morrison were on commentary. The New Day were then scheduled to defend the SmackDown Tag Team Championship against The Forgotten Sons, Miz and Morrison, and Lucha House Party in a fatal four-way tag team match at Money in the Bank.

Previous PPV matches: This is a first time fatal four way between these four teams. It’s a PPV debut for the Forgotten Sons.

Money In The Bank PPV Record: Kofi Kingston is 3-5, Big E is 2-2, The Miz is 1-5, John Morrison is 0-1, everyone else wrestles at this event for the first time.

Match: Kofi Kingston and Grank Metalik kick off the match. It’s not long before The Forgotten Sons get involved with some nice doible teaming. Morrison hits a Spanish fly on Gran Metalik to the outside, landing on everyone else as Jaxson Ryker watches from the outside. Steve Cutler and Wesley Blake get plenty of ring team on their PPV debut. They take cheap shots at New Day, knocking them off the apron. Lince Dorado gets a hot tag and picks up the pace. Morrison hits a nice flash kick on Kofi. All hell starts to break loose with all eight men going at it. Miz and Morrison hit their finishers on Big E but there’s too many peopke around to break it up. Dorado hits a stunner on Morrison and Metalik finishes it up with a top rop hurricanrana which sends him out of the ring. Jaxson Ryker gets involved, low-bridging Big E and he gets sent to the back. The Lucha House Party take out Miz, Morrison and The Forogtten Sons with springboard splashes. Big E hits the big ending on Grank Metalik and Kofi takes out Lince Dorado with trouble in paradise. Big E then pins Metalik for the three!

Result: The New Day retain the Smackdown Tag Team Championships by pinfall.

Review: This was a fun match. It would have got a few pops from the crowd throughout but due to the empty arena, it did fall a bit flat at times. It was a good match though. The New Day retain their titles tonight. It was nice to see The Lucha House Party and the Forgotten Sons on PPV.

R-Truth vs. Bobby Lashley

Background: This match was made two minutes ago, Bobby Lashley replaces MVP.

Money In The Bank PPV Record: R-Truth is 0-1, Bobby Lashley is 1-0.

Match: Bobby Lashley dominates Truth in this match. He thorws Truth from one side of the ring to the others and then hits a spinebuster. Truth attempts a scissors kick but Lashley avoids it and hits a spear for the three.

Result: Bobby Lashley wins by pinfall.

Review: This was a squash. Lashley threw Truth around for a bit and then hit a spinebuster and spear for the win. Bobby Lashley is so good. Hopefully this leads to a main event push for Lashley.

Bayley (c) vs. Tamina – Smackdown Women’s Championship match

Background: During WrestleMania 36 Part 2, Tamina was eliminated first in the fatal five-way elimination match for the SmackDown Women’s Championship due to all of the other competitors piling on top of her for the pin; Bayley subsequently retained the title. On the following SmackDown, Tamina pointed out the fact that Bayley nor any other competitor in that match actually beat her and challenged Bayley to a singles match for the championship. Bayley agreed if Tamina could defeat her friend Sasha Banks, which she did the following week to earn the title match at Money in the Bank.

Money In The Bank PPV Record: Bayley is 2-0, Tamina is 1-1.

Match: Sasha Banks is in the corner of Bayley and they boo Tamina during her introduction. Tamina looks to out-power Bayley in the early going and gets pretty hot at one point. The match is then quite back and forth. Tamina looks to hit a superkick at one point but Bayley counters with a leg hook. Tamina gets to the ropes to break the hold and then kicks Bayley out of the ring. Tamina throws Bayley over the announce desk and then back into the ring. Tamina climbs to the top, jumps off but Bayley gets her knees up which Tamina sees coming and blocks. Tamina then hits a superkick and a Samoan drop but Sasha Banks slides into the ring and then back out. Tamina chases Sasha which allows Bayley to get up. Tamina pulls Bayley up on her shoulders but Bayley counters with a crucifix pin for the victory. Bayley and Sasha then attack Tamina after the match.

Result: Bayley wins by pinfall.

Review: This was an alright match. Not a classic but certainly not terrible. Bayley wins, continuing her epic title reign. Tamina has to wait to win her first ever title in WWE. The commentators put the win down to Sasha Banks.

Braun Strowman (c) vs. Bray Wyatt – Universal Championship match

Background: At Super ShowDown, “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt lost the Universal Championship to Goldberg, who in turn lost the title to Braun Strowman during WrestleMania 36 Part 1. On the following episode of SmackDown, Wyatt interrupted Strowman after his match and reminded Strowman that it was he who brought him to the WWE with his old Wyatt Family stable. He then stated he wanted his title back and Strowman accepted the challenge, which was scheduled for Money in the Bank, though against Wyatt’s normal self instead of The Fiend.

Money In The Bank PPV Record: Braun Strowman is 1-0 at Money In /the Bank events, Bray Wyatt is 0-1.

Match: Bray Wyatt isn’t The Fiend tonight but instead his happy-go-lucky alter ego. Strowman throws Wyatt around in the early going. Braun lays into Wyatt on the outside and then back inside the ring. Strowman looks for the running shoulder chasrge outside the ring but Wyatt sidesteps and the Universal Champion goes flying over the announce desk. Huskus The Pig appears behind the barricade cheering on Bray who hits a DDT on Braun on the outside. In the ring and Wyatt hits Sister Abigail for a near fall. Wyatt looks to hit it again but Strowman counters with a chokeslam. Braun disappears behind the ring and then rises up wearing the black sheep mask that he used to wear in the Wyatt Family. Bray is extremely happy and Strowman goes down to his knees. The two men embrace but Strowman pulls off the mask and stomps on it. Braun hits a running powerslam for the three.

Result: Braun Strowman retains the Universal Championship by pinfall.

Review: This was a decent enough match. Maybe not a main event quality but it was still good. The psychology was good and there were some fun spots. These two men do have chemistry and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a rematch art the next PPV.

Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Seth Rollins – WWE Championship match

Background: During WrestleMania 36 Part 1, Seth Rollins lost to Kevin Owens, while in the main event of Part 2, Drew McIntyre defeated Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Championship On the April 13 episode of Raw, Rollins stated that by losing to Owens, he had been crucified and now had truly risen (buying into his “Monday Night Messiah” gimmick). He later attacked McIntyre following the latter’s match and performed two Stomps on him. The following week, McIntyre challenged Rollins to a match at Money in the Bank with his title on the line, stating that as champion, he needed to face the best. Rollins responded, noting their similarities, such as both being former NXT Champions, as well as both defeating Lesnar to win a world championship at WrestleMania. Rollins then accepted McIntyre’s challenge.

Money In The Bank PPV Record: Drew McIntyre is 0-2, Seth Rollins is 5-1.

Match: Drew McIntyre takes the advantage using his power in a cagey start to the match. Rollins targets the knees of McIntyre to take the advantage before hitting a suicide dive. Seth hits two diving knee strikes to the face before trying another suicide dive but McIntyre counters with a belly to belly. Drew gets a second wind and hits belly to belly suplexes in the ring, a big boot and then a clubbing blow off the top. Seth hits a frog splash for a one count. Seth grabs a chair but then decides again using it and then attempts a stomp but McIntyre counters and hits the Glasgow kiss headbutt. Rollins hits the superplex/falcon arrow combo for a two count. McIntyre hits the futureshock DDT for a near fall. Drew hits a German suplex off the top rope and then attempts a claymore but rungs into a superkick. Rollins hits a stomp but McIntyre kicks out of the pinfall that follows. Drew counters a stomp and hits a Glasgow kiss but Rollins hits a superkick causing McIntyre to bounce off the ropes and hit a claymore which is enough for the victory! McIntyre and Rollins shake hands after the match.

Result: Drew McIntyre retains the WWE Championship by pinfall.

Review: This was a really good match from these two. It felt like a main event. There were plenty of near falls and moments where you thought it might be over but in the end it was McIntyre who successfully defends the WWE Championship on his first PPV defence. I doubt this feud continues, McIntyre won clean tonight. A good match.

Lacey Evans vs. Nia Jax vs. Carmella vs. Shayna Baszler vs. Dana Brooke vs. Asuka – Women’s Money In The Bank Ladder match

Background: Qualifying matches for the women’s Money in the Bank ladder match began on the April 13 episode of Raw. Asuka, Shayna Baszler, and the returning Nia Jax qualified for the match by defeating Ruby Riott, Sarah Logan, and Kairi Sane, respectively. Dana Brooke then qualified by defeating Naomi on the April 17 episode of SmackDown. On the following week’s SmackDown, Lacey Evans defeated Sasha Banks to qualify for the match. Carmella won the final spot by defeating Mandy Rose on the May 1 episode of SmackDown.

Previous PPV matches: This is a first time PPV match involving these 6 girls.

Money In The Bank PPV Record: Lacey Evans is 0-1, Nia Jax is 0-2, Carmella is 2-1, Dana Brooke is 1-1, Asuka is 0-1 and Shayna wrestles at this event for the first time.

Match: The six ladies start in the lobby. Asuka starts by diving off a balcony onto the other ladies and then darting into an elevator. The women run up the stairs where they bump into their male counterparts. Nia and Carmella scrap into an office with Dana and Shayna in tow. Dana lays out Nia with a chair and then sees a briefcase hanging from the ceiling with money in it but Stephanie McMahon (who clearly isn’t in the same room) tells her that the real briefcase is on the roof. Carmella then lays out Dana with a picture of herself (Carmella). The men and women turn a corner where Paul Heyman is eating a buffet and it turns into a food fight. Nia powerbombs Carmella through a table and then comes face to face with Otis before they go off in different directions. Nia and Asuka battle onto the roof and into the ring and Lacey Evans soon joins them. Nia grabs a ladder and climbs it but Asuka and Lacey pull her down. Asuka and Lacey take turns to climb but Asuka gets to the top. King Corbin then arrives but Asuka kicks him down and then pulls down the women’s briefcase!

Result: Asuka wins the women’s Money In The Bank ladder match.

Review: This was a lot of fun. I really liked the concept, it was executed perfectly. Asuka has been great so far since the pandemic so a worthy winner. This match was crazy and I’m not sure we’ll see anything like it again but I enjoyed it a lot.

AJ Styles vs. Otis vs. Aleister Black vs. Rey Mysterio vs. King Corbin vs. Daniel Bryan – Men’s Money In The Bank Ladder match

Background: Qualifying matches for the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match began on the April 17 episode of SmackDown where Daniel Bryan defeated Cesaro to qualify. On the following Raw, Aleister Black, Apollo Crews, and Rey Mysterio qualified for the match by defeating Austin Theory, Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP), and Murphy, respectively. King Corbin then qualified by defeating Drew Gulak on the April 24 episode of SmackDown. On the April 27 episode of Raw, Crews injured his left knee during his United States Championship match against Andrade, pulling him from the ladder match. Otis was the next to qualify by defeating Dolph Ziggler on the May 1 episode of SmackDown. On the May 4 episode of Raw, AJ Styles—in his first appearance since being buried alive by The Undertaker at WrestleMania—won a Last Chance gauntlet match to take the final spot vacated by Crews.

Money In The Bank PPV Record: AJ Styles is 2-2, Rey Mysterio is 2-2, King Corbin is 2-1, Daniel Bryan is 2-2. Aleister Black and Otis wrestle at this event for the first time.

Match: The six men start in the gym. Corbin throws a weight at Rey Mysterio who ducks and Corbin smashes a mirror. Otis picks up a barbell and drops it on AJ pinning him to the floor. Styles asks Rey to remove it but Rey runs off. The men all run off past a bathroom where Brother Love appears from a cubicle. There’s a fake ring set up where Daniel Bryan ties up Corbin and hits him with the yes kicks as Otis cheers along. Bryan then lays out Otis and runs off. A weird Doink The Clown knock-off then appears. AJ Styles comes face to face with a picture of The Undertaker and freaks out. He then walks into a room lit in blue with a casket on the floor and Aleister Black kicks him into it. The men and women turn a corner where Paul Heyman is eating a buffet and it turns into a food fight. Otis walks into a canteen and splats a pie into the face of John Laurinaitis. Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles fight into Vince McMahon’s office, Vince kicks them out and they both very sheepishly leave. Corbin takes out AJ and Bryan and then heads to the roof. Corbin is the first man to get to the roof and Otis soon joins him. Aleister Black and Rey Mysterio aren’t far behind and AJ Styles is next. King Corin then throws Rey Mysterio and Aleister Black off the top of the roof! I guess they won’t be winning. Daniel Bryan emerges in enough time to stop AJ Styles from winning. All four men go at it and it ends with AJ Styles and King Corbin fighting for the briefcase on top of the ladder. They unhook it between them but drop it into the arms of Otis who is declared the winner!

Result: Otis wins the mens Money In The Bank ladder match.

Review: Like the women’s match, this was insanity. There was a good humour to it though with Brother Love and Vince McMahon’s parts. Otis winning is a real shocker to me, could he really be a world champion? Maybe he will. I’m not sure we’ll ever see matches like these again but as a novelty they were a lot of fun.
