Tick tick boom. That is the theme for this event and WWE is very much a ticking timebomb at the moment. Randy Orton is the WWE Champion but due to getting himself disqualified at Cyber Sunday against Shawn Michaels a few weeks ago, Michaels has got another shot at the belt. Michaels has hit sweet chin music on Orton numerous times but he won’t be allowed to hit it during the Survivor Series match because Orton agreed with Raw General Manager William Regal that if Michaels hit the move then he would be disqualified. However, if Orton loses the match on purpose by disqualification then he will lose the WWE Championship.

Over on Smackdown, Batista must once again defend the World Heavyweight Championship against The Undertaker. The two men are tied in matches against each other, with a win each and a draw on pay per view as well as another draw on an episode of Smackdown. Now the two men meet again but this time they will compete in a Hell In A Cell match. It’s The Undertakers specialty, will he win back the title tonight? ECW Champion CM Punk will also be defending his title tonight and it’ll be in a triple threat match against John Morrison and The Miz. Miz and Morrison have been exchanging verbal jabs with one another but on Smackdown last week they beat Matt Hardy and MVP to win the WWE Tag Team Championships. Could this be the start of a new friendship between the two men and how will it affect the dynamic in this match?

It wouldn’t be a Survivor Series event without a traditional Survivor Series match and tonight there is just one. Triple H will lead a team made up of Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio, Kane and Matt Hardy against Umaga, Finay, Mr Kennedy, MVP and Big Daddy V. This match encompasses a few current rivalries including Raw’s Triple H and Umaga, and the Intercontinental Championship feud between champion Jeff Hardy and Mr Kennedy. The Smackdown rivalries in this match between Rey Mysterio and Finay and former tag team partners Matt Hardy and MVP. MVP attacked Hardy after their tag team match on Smackdown last week. The other rivalry in this match is between Kane and Big Daddy V which has mostly taken place on ECW. There will be another 5 on 5 match but it’s one fall to a win and it’s the WWE Divas in action where Mickie James, Maria, Michelle McCool, Torrie Wilson and Kelly Kelly take on Beth Phoenix, Melina, Jillian Hall, Victoria and Layla.

Vince McMahon is showing his son Hornswoggle tough love and tonight might be the toughest example yet as Hornswoggle takes on The Great Khali. It’ll be the littlest man on the roster against the tallest. William Regal and Jonathan Coachman have somewhat been training Hornswoggle but they both know that he doesn’t stand a chance. Also tonight, Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch will be defending the World Tag Team Championships against Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhodes who are a team made out of respect. Holly and Rhodes defeated The Highlanders and Paul London & Brian Kendrick to earn their shot.

A video package kicks us off, first showing a bit of history and then a run-down of the card tonight, namely the mens traditional Survivor Series match, the Shawn Michaels/Randy Orton match and the World Heavyweight Championship match between Batista and The Undertaker.

Joey Styles then welcomes us to the show, we’re kicking off with ECW!

CM Punk (c) vs. John Morrison vs. The Miz – ECW Championship match

This is a first time triple threat match between these two men. CM Punk has a 1-0 record at Survivor Series events following his victory last year. John Morrison was in the same match but on the losing side so has a 0-1 Survivor Series record. The Miz makes his Survivor Series debut tonight. This is a fourth PPV defence of the ECW Championship for CM Punk, nobody else currently has defended their title that many times on PPV. John Morrison and The Miz are now the WWE Tag Team Champion. The Miz and John Morrison go right for CM Punk as the bell rings. Punk fires back with a huge kick to CM Punk’s head. Morrison catapults Punk who lands on the second rope and hits a cross body on The Miz. Punk then throws The Miz out of the ring before throwing Morrison out too and then diving out at both men. Punk throws Morrison back into the ring and then looks to hit a springboard clothesline on him but The Miz grabs his leg allowing Morrison to bring Punk back into the ring.

The Miz and Morrison hit a double suplex on CM Punk and Miz then lays in some right hands. Miz holds Punk allowing Morrison to lay in some right hands. Morrison then attempts a springboard but The Miz pushes Morrison out of the ring. The Miz applies a camel clutch to CM Punk but breaks the hold to knock Morrison off the apron. CM Punk then hits an enzeguri on The Miz and Morrison then dropkicks Miz out of the ring. Morrison hits a backbreaker/neckbreaker on Punk for the first near fall of the night. Morrison applies a sleeper but Punk gets out of it with kicks. John Morrison is a former ECW Champion, Intercontinental Champion and four time WWE Tag Team Champion. Morrison disposes of Punk and then suplexes Miz back into the ring for a near fall. Miz hits a facebuster for a two count and then his trademark clothesline in the corner for a near fall. The Miz is vastly improved in-ring.

Punk hits a dropkick on Miz and then clotheslines and elbows. CM Punk then hits a running knee and a bulldog on The Miz for a near fall. CM Punk hits a double underhook backbreaker on The Miz for another two count and Morrison then rolls up Punk for a near fall. Punk hits some kicks on Morrison and then sets him up for the go to sleep but Morrison nips down to the apron. Great way to kick off the show.

Mickie James, Maria, Torrie Wilson, Michelle McCool & Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix, Melina, Jillian Hall, Victoria & Layla – Ten diva tag team match

These ten girls were all involved in the divas battle royal at Summerslam along with Kristal and Brooke who are both no longer with the company. Melina botches her entrance, slipping off the apron but laughs it off and does it again. The only divas with a previous record at Survivor Series are Mickie James who is 1-0, Melina who is 0-1 and Victoria who is 1-0. Victoria starts the match against Michelle McCool. Michelle hits a suplex for a one count and then a knockdown for another one count. Victoria hits a kick but then runs into a big boot and Michelle gets a near fall. Michelle tags in Torrie Wilson who hits a big clothesline but Victoria scoops Torrie up and hits a tilt-a-whirl sides-lam for a near fall. Victoria tags in Layla but Torrie hits her with a suplex for a two count. Lots of Survivor Series debuts tonight including Kelly Kelly who tags in. Jillian Hall also tags in and rubs Kelly’s face in her boobs.

Jillian lets out a scream and then handsprings into Kelly’s boots. Kelly then rolls Jillian up for a near fall. Kelly tags in Maria who hits some knees and a kick to the face. Beth Phoenix makes a blind tag and hits a powerslam on Maria. Beth then tags Layla back in and Layla tags in Melina. Melina hits a strange looking right hand but then misses with a knee to the back. Maria tags Mickie James in for the first time and she takes down Melina with a Lou Thesz press. Melina hits a boot and then takes Victoria off the apron. Beth Phoenix gets involved but all hell breaks loose! Mickie then kisses Melina and follows it up with the Mick kick for the three. Mickie James’ team win the match. I thought this was a traditional Survivor Series match. It wasn’t. Good win for the babyfaces.

Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch (c) vs. Hardcore Holly & Cody Rhodes – World Tag Team Championship match

Well this is a bonus match but we’re shown that there was a exclusive match last Thursday where Holly and Rhodes defeated both The Highlanders and London & Kendrick. Lawler accidentally calls him “Bobcore Holly” I love that. Hardcore has a 1-3 record at Survivor Series events, the other three men in this match make their Survivor Series debuts tonight. This is a PPV debut for Cody Rhodes tonight. Lance Cade and Cody Rhodes start the match and Cade hits a hiptoss on the rookie. Rhodes then hits a dropkick and a sunset flip for a one count. Cody hits a headlock takedown but Cade gets back into it with a backbreaker before tagging in Trevor Murdoch. Hardcore Holly tags himself in and knocks down Murdoch. The commentators tell us that Matt Hardy won’t be in the match tonight so it’s going to be 5 vs. 4 in the traditional Survivor Series match.

Todd Grisham is backstage with Triple H, Kane, Rey Mysterio and Jeff Hardy. Hardy says that MVP has put a target on his back tonight. Mysterio says that he’s used to being an under-dog. Kane claims that everyone on the team is different and he’s had his issues with Triple H. Jeff Hardy cuts in and says that Triple H put him in hospital once. Triple H says that at Survivor Series everyone can put their issues aside to do something terrible to somebody else.

Triple H, Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio & Kane vs. Umaga, Finlay, Mr Kennedy, MVP & Big Daddy V – Traditional Survivor Series match

There are sound issues with Mr Kennedy’s mic as he makes his entrance. Rey Mysterio starts the match against Mr Kennedy. I wonder why they didn’t replace Matt Hardy with somebody. There’s a bit of chain wrestling between Mysterio and Kennedy until Kennedy knocks Mysterio down. All 6 commentators involved in this match. Mysterio hits a boot and then a spinning head scissors. Coach and Regal are backstage with Hornswoggle who is pacing back and forth. Vince McMahon then arrives and asks for some time with his son. McMahon says that he’s made this match because Hornswoggle is an underdog and Vince has always won as an underdog. Vince said they are McMahon’s and McMahon’s stick together.

Shane McMahon’s music hits and out comes the boy wonder. Shane then introduces Vince McMahon before introducing Hornswoggle!

Hornswoggle vs. The Great Khali

Hornswoggle goes into this match undefeated on pay per view. A win tonight would give him the joint best PPV record of anyone up to now alongside Max Mini, ironically. The Great Khali is joined by Ranjin Singh. Like every match so far tonight, this is a first time PPV meeting. It’s the smallest against the biggest man on the roster and both are making their Survivor Series debuts tonight. Ranjin Singh gets on the mic before the bell and asks for the referee to bring the competitors together so he can explain the rules. Khali is three foot taller than Hornswoggle. A “We Want Shaq” chant breaks out for Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq is sat at ringside and Vince tells him to sit down. Vince McMahon gets on the mic and tells the crowd that it’s too bad. Hornswoggle throws his hat at Khali and then rips off his jacket and waistcoat.

This match will go down as a disqualification win for Khali tonight!

There’s an advert for Wrestlemania 24 and we’re then shown some sports stars at ringside.

There’s a video package up next for Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels.

Randy Orton (c) vs. Shawn Michaels – WWE Championship match

So the stipulations are that if Shawn Michaels uses sweet chin music then he automatically loses the match but if Randy Orton gets himself disqualified then he will lose the WWE title. This is the fourth PPV match between these two men and Orton has won 2 of the previous 3 matches. Shawn Michaels is 4-9 at Survivor Series events and Orton is 3-1 at the event. The WWE Championship has only changed hands once in the last seven years at Survivor Series. That was in 2002 when The Big Show beat Brock Lesnar. Michaels applies a neck vice in the early going, taking Orton down to the mat. Michaels has the neck vice applies for a long time and Orton even tries to slam Michaels but Michaels keeps the hold applied. Orton eventually gets out of the neck vice and lays in some right hands. Michaels looks like he was going to hit sweet chin music but then stops himself and hits a takedown. Michaels then applies a chinlock and Orton can’t get out of that hold.

Orton breaks the hold by getting out of the ring. Michaels hits a baseball slide and then a springboard moonsault to the outside. Michaels rolls Orton back into the ring and then heads to the top and hits a cross body but Orton rolls through and gets a near fall. Orton hits a European uppercut but Michaels gets back into it by locking on a sharpshooter. All sorts of irony with Michaels using the sharpshooter. Orton gets to the ropes which breaks the hold. Orton thumbs Michaels in the eye and then drops him on the top rope. Orton hits a knee drop and then stomps away at Michaels. Orton then lays Michaels across the second rope and hits his trademark DDT for a near fall. Orton applies a chinlock which Michaels gets out of and hits a flying forearm. Shawn then nips up and hits an inverted atomic drop and right hands. Orton hits a dropkick for a near fall but Michaels gets back into it with powerslam. Michaels heads to the top and hits a flying elbow before motioning for sweet chin music! Michaels will be disqualified if he hits this.

Michaels doesn’t hit sweet chin music, instead rolls Orton up for a near fall. Michaels then applies a crippler crossface but Orton gets out of that. Randy hits a clothesline and then a backbreaker before motioning for the RKO. Orton decides against that and lines Michaels up for a punt. Michaels manages to catch the leg of Orton and then apply an ankle lock! Orton kicks his way out of the ankle lock and then pushes Michaels into the ringpost. Randy attempts the RKO but Michaels pushes him away. Shawn attempts sweet chin music but stops himself at the last second. The hesitation is enough for Randy to hit the RKO and that’s all she wrote. Orton gets the three and retains his WWE Championship. Good match between these two men. Great psychology. After the match Orton stands Michaels up and demands that Michaels tells Orton that he is the future. You can see where this is going. And it goes there. Michaels drops Orton with sweet chin music.

There’s a video package up next for Batista and The Undertaker.

Batista vs. The Undertaker – Hell In A Cell match for the World Heavyweight Championship

This is the fourth PPV match between these two men. So far they have both won one and drawn one. The Undertaker has a 7-7 record at Survivor Series events and Batista has a 1-2 record. Batista knocks down Undertaker early and follows that up with a clothesline. Undertaker fires back with some right hands and then sets up for a chokeslam but Batista battles out of it. Undertaker hits a clothesline and then some headbutts. Undertaker then hits snake eyes and a running big boot for a two count. Undertaker reaches under the ring and grabs a steel chair but Batista sees him coming and hits Undertaker with a spear. There are a few boo’s for Batista. Batista grabs the chair but Undertaker hits him with a big boot and a clothesline for a near fall. Undertaker looks to lock on the triangle choke but Batista quickly rolls out of the ring. Undertaker smashes Batista into the ring steps and then lays in some right hands.

Undertaker then rubs Batista’s face up against the cell before hitting his trademark legdrop on the apron. Undertaker drives a steel chair into the throat of Batista which causes the World Heavyweight Champion to cough up some blood. Capsule. Undertaker gets a near fall and then works the shoulder of Batista. Undertaker attempts old school but Batista catches him and drops The Undertaker with a spinebuster for as near fall. Batista hits a clothesline for a two count and then follows it up with another clothesline and then a running powerslam for a two count. Outside the ring and it’s Batista’s turn to smash Undertaker into the ring steps and then into the side of the cell. Undertaker reverses an Irish whip and sends Batista into the ring steps and then launches Batista head first into the cell. Undertaker smashes Batista with the chair and Batista is now bleeding from the face. Batista gets back into the match with a suplex but can’t capitalise as Undertaker locks on a triangle choke. Batista gets out of the choke but Undertaker grabs the steel steps. Batista kicks the steps out of Undertakers hands and then rams the challenger into the ringpost.

Batista picks up the steps and rams them into the face of The Undertaker four times. Undertaker is now bleeding. Back in the ring and Batista hits lefts and rights in the corner which usually results in a last ride…which it does. Undertaker then hits a chokeslam for a near fall. Undertaker looks to hit the tombstone but Batista slips down and hits a spinebuster for a near fall. Batista hits another spinebuster and then pulls a table out from under the ring. Batista sets the table up in the ring and Batista bombs Undertaker right through it! Batista makes the cover but Undertaker gets his shoulder up! Batista looks to hit a Batista bomb on the ring steps but Undertaker back body drops Batista onto the steps for a near fall. Undertaker then hits the tombstone! He covers Batista who, after a little nudge from the referee, gets his shoulder up. Undertaker looks to hit a tombstone on the ring steps and he hits it! Undertaker covers Batista but Edge pulls the referee out of the ring!

Edge gets in the ring and smashes Undertaker with a camera! Edge grabs a chair, lays Undertaker down on the ring steps and smashes his face with the chair! Edge then lays Batista on top of Undertaker and the referee makes the count! Batista retains his World Heavyweight Championship with a lot of help from Edge! Why would Edge go after Undertaker? Edge beat Undertaker for the title, had a big rivalry with Batista and was last seen feuding with Kane before Kane put Edge out of action. Edge smashes Undertaker again with the chair after the bell for good measure. A good match if a little boring.

And that was Survivor Series 2007. It felt like a good show. The triple threat match was a good way to open the show and CM Punk came away with another title defence. I think The Miz was probably the right man to pin in this match but I will say that he has come a long way, he’s really improved. I like CM Punk as ECW Champion so have no problem with him hanging onto the title. I think this’ll mean that Morrison and Miz will step away from the ECW title scene to concentrate on the tag team division. Up next was the divas tag team match. All of the girls got their moves in but were given less than five minutes. I would have preferred this to have been a traditional Survivor Series match but I guess they wanted to rush the match and get it over with quickly. Nice for the babyfaces to win, I guess it puts Mickie James in contention for the Women’s Championship.

Next up Cade & Murdoch defeated Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhodes to retain the World Tag Team Championships. This was nothing special but it gave the champions a successful defence. The match also gave Cody Rhodes a PPV debut. Trevor Murdoch finished the match in pretty spectacular fashion, I’d guess this feud is over but we’ll see who is up next for Cade and Murdoch. Next up on this show was the traditional Survivor Series match. Triple H and Jeff Hardy won the match which I don’t mind. Let’s be honest, Triple H was always going to win but Jeff Hardy gets a good rub off this too. I was surprised they couldn’t find anybody to replace Matt Hardy with but I guess it makes Triple H and Jeff Hardy look even more like underdogs when they won. Finlay came out of this looking pretty strong too. More of these matches on Survivor Series PPV’s please!

The match between Hornswoggle and The Great Khali didn’t really get started. This match was designed to turn Finlay face and I’m sure we’ll get a feud between Finlay and Khali now. I like the turn for Finlay, I think he’ll be a good babyface because he’s no nonsense and will work as a bodyguard type character for Hornswoggle. Randy Orton beat Shawn Michaels following hesitation to use sweet chin music and an RKO. I really liked the psychology in this match. It was a really good match between the two but once again the WWE Championship doesn’t close the show. Is that a reflection on Randy Orton? Cena main evented every show that he was WWE Champion for. Orton won the match and we’ll see if this feud continues. I can see the two wrestling in a gimmick match at Armageddon next month.

In the final match of the evening Batista defeated The Undertaker with a lot of help from Edge. Edge returned to cost Undertaker the match which was an interesting call as he’s got more history with Batista. This puts Edge in the main event scene, a scene that really needs him at the moment. I’d like to see a triple threat match between Edge, Batista and Undertaker and could definitely see them going down that route for Wrestlemania.

Overall it felt like a pretty good show. There was nothing terrible on the event and plenty of good matches to go back and watch.

Overall Rating: 62.9/100 (ranked 46th out of 218)
