Welcome to my review of the inaugural Over The Limit pay per view. There’s nothing different or unique about this show, it’s just a regular PPV with a different name. There are 8 matches scheduled for tonight which includes five title matches. The WWE Championship will be on the line as Batista once again gets a shot at John Cena. Batista wasn’t happy with the way Cena beat him at Extreme Rules, taping him around the ringpost so he couldn’t stand up. Cena even admitted himself that it might have been a cheap way to win. The night after Extreme Rules on Raw there would be a triple threat match between Batista, Randy Orton and Sheamus, a match that Batista won after Edge (who had just been drafted to Raw) speared Orton. Batista and Cena meet tonight in an I Quit match.

The World Heavyweight Championship is also set to be defended as Jack Swagger puts the title on the line against a man that was drafted to Smackdown in the draft, The Big Show. Big Show was announced as the number one contender by Smackdown General Manager Teddy Long and since then Big Show has been a thorn in Swaggers side. Swagger has been showing off the accolades he has won in his life which include Scrabble Championships, Ballroom dancing trophies and amateur wrestling accomplishments. Big Show has taken a lot of pride in smashing these to pieces. Eve will be defending her newly won WWE Divas Championship against the former champion, Maryse.

Drew McIntyre was stripped of the Intercontinental Championship after he brutally attacked Matt Hardy and wouldn’t stop. Teddy Long then announced a four man tournament to crown a new champion and Kofi Kingston would beat Christian in the final to win the gold. However Drew McIntyre would show up with a note from Vince McMahon stating that the title win for Kingston did not count and Drew McIntyre was still the champion. A match would then be made for Over The Limit between McIntyre and Kingston for the title. Chris Jericho and The Miz have been teaming up as late with a unified dislike towards The Big Show. Jericho would defeat DH Smith to earn he and Miz a shot at the Unified Tag Team Championships held by The Hart Dynasty, a match scheduled for Over The Limit. Bret Hart was recently announced as the new General Manager of Raw but not before he defeated The Miz for the United States Championship!

A big match set for tonight is between Edge and Randy Orton. Edge speared Orton, costing him a shot at the WWE Championship, turning heel in the process. Edge would tell Orton that he did it because he wanted to team with Orton once again as Rated-RKO but Orton had no desire to do so. These two men meet tonight on PPV for the first time in a long time. Also tonight, CM Punk and Rey Mysterio go one on one again and the stakes couldn’t be higher. If Rey Mysterio loses then he must join the Straight-Edge society but if CM Punk loses then he must have his head shaved bald. Finally tonight Ted DiBiase Jr will go one on one with R-Truth after Truth turned down the chance to be Dibiase’s “Virgil”.

In a dark match prior to the event MVP defeated Chavo Guerrero.

A video package kicks us off, it hypes the matches between Rey Mysterio & CM Punk, Randy Orton & Edge and John Cena & Batista. No mention of Jack Swagger and Big Show which is a shame. Michael Cole welcomes us to the show, he’s joined by Jerry Lawler and Matt Striker.

Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Kofi Kingston – Intercontinental Championship match

This is a first time PPV meeting between these two men. It’s a really solid looking midcard match on paper. McIntyre has a good PPV record going into this match, he’s won 4 of his 6 matches prior to this. It’s a quick start to the match with Kofi hitting kicks, a dropkick and then clotheslining McIntyre out of the ring. Kingston then dives out at Drew with a suicide dive. Back in the ring and Kofi hits a splash in the corner, a clothesline and then looks for the boom drop but McIntyre rolls out of the ring. Kofi follows, pulling Drew up on to the apron but McIntyre pushes Kingston into the ringpost before ramming him into the apron and then rolling him back into the ring. Drew hits some right hands and then looks to work the left shoulder. He hits a gutbuster for a one count and then applies a seated abdominal stretch.

Kofi gets out of the hold but Drew hits him with a big kick for a two count. Drew then goes up to the middle rope but Kofi gets his feet up. Kofi hits some chops and a dropkick before hitting right hands in the corner and an uppercut. Kofi heads to the top and hits a flying cross body for the first near fall of the night. Drew then hits another gutbuster for a near fall. Kofi side steps a shoulder charge and McIntyre hits the ringpost. Kingston then hits a boom drop in the corner for a near fall. Kofi looks for trouble in paradise but McIntyre avoids it and looks for the future-shock DDT but Kofi counters it into the SOS! Kingston hooks the leg and gets the three! Kofi Kingston wins the match and becomes the Intercontinental Champion! Solid start to the show.

Rating: 6.75/10

Drew McIntyre gets on the microphone after the match and tells Teddy Long that the PPV still stop right now unless he comes out and reverses the decision. Matt Hardy’s music hits and out walks Hardy! Hardy drops McIntyre with a twist of fate!

CM Punk is backstage with Luke Gallows and Serena. He has them saying his name and then tells them that Mysterio will be joining the Straight-Edge society tonight. It ends in creepy fashion as Luke Gallows huge his mentor.

R-Truth vs. Ted DiBiase

This is a first time PPV match between these two men. R-Truth has only won 1 PPV match which includes his former run as K-Kwik so he’ll be looking to double that tonight. Ted DiBiase is joined by Virgil who he has taken on in the same capacity that his father did years ago. Truth starts the match with an armbar and DiBiase forces him in the corner to break it. It’s nice to see the lower-midcarders on the card. Dibiase applies a headlock and we get some countering of holds from both men. DiBiase slaps Truth and Truth slaps him back! Truth backflips and ducks below clotheslines before hitting a dropkick and clotheslining Dibiase out of the ring. Virgil checks on Dibiase but Truth intimidates him away. Truth then rolls DiBiase back into the ring and Virgil distracts R-Truth whilst allows Dibiase hit a neckbreaker from behind.

Ted throws R-Truth out of the ring and then follows and rams him into the barricade. Back in the ring and Dibiase hits a flapjack for a near fall. Dibiase chokes Truth with his boot and then hits a clothesline for a near fall. DiBiase applies a sleeper which Truth fights out of but Ted hits a side suplex for a two count. DiBiase goes up to the middle rope but Truth hits him with a right hand on the way down. Truth then hits a running forearm and pops Dibiase on the top rope. DiBiase blocks the superplex attempt but before he can do anything on the top rope, Truth crotches him. R-Truth hits a couple of clotheslines and a hiptoss before hitting a flatliner for a two count. Undertaker and Scott Steiner have previously used that flatliner move. Truth looks for a scissors kick but DiBiase avoids it and hits an electric chair drop for a two count.

Truth hits a float-over stunner type move for a two count and then a corkscrew flying forearm which Truth calls “The Lie Detector”. Truth hooks the leg and gets the three! R-Truth beats Ted DiBiase tonight! I didn’t expect that result. Big result for Truth tonight. I can only think that this is the beginning of the end for Virgil.

Teddy Long is backstage when Drew McIntyre barges in and tells him to change the result of his match and also fire Matt Hardy. Teddy refuses so Drew smashes up his office.

There’s a video package next showing the history between Rey Mysterio and CM Punk.

Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk – If Rey loses he must join the Straight-Edge society, if CM Punk loses then he will have his head shaved.

This is the fourth PPV match between these two men. CM Punk has won 2 of the previous 3 matches. CM Punk is without the Straight-Edge Society as they have been banned from ringside. Punk hits Rey with a cheap shot as the bell rings and then continues the offensive with kicks and a headbutt. Rey fights back with right hands as we get a shot of the barbers chair on the outside but Punk drops Mysterio on the top turnbuckle. Punk back body drops Mysterio out of the ring and then dives out at Rey who avoids the plancha and hits a headscissors on Punk into the barricade. Back in the ring and Rey sets Punk up for the 619 but Punk avoids it with a kick before sliding Mysterio out of the ring head-first into the barber chair. That was a great spot. Punk is bleeding from the head, I’m not sure how that happened, it might have been the barricade shot. The referee puts a stop to the match and holds a towel to Punks head. A doctor joins the referee. CM Punk looks angry.

Rey Mysterio gets back into the ring but CM Punk hits him with a baseball slide and then smashes him into the barricade three times and takes him down on the outside with a suplex! this match has sped right up. Punk rolls Rey back into the ring and hits him with a rolling senton for a two count. Punk applies a head scissors which Rey gets out of. Jerry Lawler sounds like he’s getting pissed off with Matt Striker. Punk hits a clothesline for a two count. Punk lays in some knee strikes but runs into a boot and Rey hits a sunset flip powerbomb for a two count. The crowd seem like they are really into this match. The two men exchange right hands and Rey hits a springboard cross-body for a two count. Rey hits a top rope seated senton as he takes the advantage. Punk back body drops Mysterio head-first into the top turnbuckle and then hits a running knee.

Mysterio counters a bulldog and sets up for a 619 but again CM Punk is quick to turn around and hits a backbreaker for a two count. Punk sets up for a go to sleep but Mysterio counters with a hurricanrana just for Punk to counter that and powerbomb Rey into the turnbuckle. Punk then heads to the middle rope and hits a bulldog for a two count. Punk hits some kicks on Rey for a two count and Rey looks for a moonsault but Punk catches him, setting him up for the go to sleep. Mysterio counters it with a hurricanrana and then the 619! Rey looks for a splash but Punk avoids it. He leans back to pin Rey but Mysterio counters the pin and rolls Punk up for the three! Rey Mysterio beats CM Punk tonight! Punk is getting his head shaved!

The mystery man that we have seen as of late attacks Rey Mysterio from behind and out comes Luke Gallows and Serena to help out. Gallows brings handcuffs and Punk looks to handcuff Rey to the ropes but out comes Kane! Kane lays out Gallows and then disposes of the mystery man before hitting Punk with a chokeslam! Kane then battles with Gallows up the entrance ramp and Rey handcuffs Punk to the middle rope! Mysterio cuts away CM Punk’s hair and uses the clippers to take off even more. The clippers aren’t doing a great job to be honest.

Chris Jericho is backstage telling Big Show that he will be winning the Tag Team Championships with Miz tonight. Miz sneaks up behind Big Show and Show tells them both that he will knock the pair of them out. They both leave looking sheepish.

The Hart Dynasty (Tyson Kidd & David Hart Smith) vs. The Miz & Chris Jericho – Unified Tag Team Championship match

This is a first time meeting between these two tag teams. The Hart Dynasty are actually undefeated on PPV, they’ve had two matches and won them both. A win tonight would make them the only wrestlers to have wrestled 3 PPV matches and won them all, along with Max Mini. The Miz and Chris Jericho have both previously teamed with The Big Show but now they team with each other for the first time. This is Jericho’s 24th PPV in a row, he’s ahead of everyone else in that respect but the all time record for consecutive PPV’s is Kurt Angle. This is also Chris Jericho’s 100th WWE PPV appearance. The Miz and Tyson Kidd start the match and Miz ground Tyson but Kidd hits a snapmare and some kicks. Kidd tags in DH Smith and the champs hit a double suplex. Smith stalls the suplex and then hooks the leg for a one count.

DH Smith kicks Miz to the outside and then back body drops Jericho out of the ring. Smith tags in Kidd and Smith then throws Kid out of the ring onto Jericho and Miz. Back in the ring and Kidd gets a near fall on Miz. Miz forces Kidd into his corner and tags in Jericho who hits some right hands and a knee. The crowd break out in a “Y2J” chant. Jericho looks for a back body drop but Kidd lands on his feet, hits a dropkick and tags in DH Smith who hits a legdrop for a two count. Jericho hits a boot and a dropkick off the middle rope before baseball sliding Smith out of the ring. Miz hits DH Smith with a cheap shot. Back in the ring and Jericho hits a side suplex on Smith for a two count. Jericho applies a sleeper whilst screaming “ask him”. Smith gets out of the sleeper and hits a sidewalk slam.

Jericho tags in The Miz who stops Smith from tagging in Tyson Kidd. Miz hits Smith with rights and lefts and then a running boot. for a two count. Miz then applies a sleeper which he transitions into a camel clutch but DH Smith gets up to his feet and hits an electric chair drop. Smith tags in Tyson Kidd and Miz tags in Jericho. Kidd hits dropkicks on Jericho as he speeds up the pace. He dropkicks Miz off the apron and then rolls Jericho up for a two count. Kidd then looks for a hurricanrana but Jericho counters it into a walls of Jericho! Kidd gets to the bottom rope to break the hold and then kicks Jericho in the face. Tyson Kidd looks for a springboard something but Jericho counters it with a codebreaker for a very near fall. Kidd tags in David Hart Smith who hits clotheslines on both Jericho and Miz. He disposes of Miz and then hits a belly to belly on Jericho.

Smith hits a powerslam on Jericho for a near fall. Smith then looks for a running powerslam but Jericho counters it and rolls him up for a two count. Jericho and Miz both question the count and Natalya then trips up Jericho! Smith then scoops Jericho up and hits him with the running powerslam for a near fall. Mix makes a blind tag and hits a backbreaker/neckbreaker combo for a two count. The Miz then looks for a sharpshooter on Smith but Smith counters it with a roll-up for a near fall. Miz tries to get the skull crushing finale on Smith but Smith pushes Miz into Jericho before rolling up Miz for a near fall. The Miz hits a running clothesline on Smith but Smith catches him in a bear hug, Tyson Kidd tags himself in and hits the Hart attack on Miz which is enough for the three! The Hart Dynasty win the match, making it three wins from three PPV matches! Good match from these two teams.

Randy Orton vs. Edge

This is only the second pay per view match between these two men. Edge beat Orton at Vengeance 2004 to win the Intercontinental Championship. No titles on the line this time though. Amazing that these two men have never gone one on one on pay per view since they became main eventers, mostly because they have spent most of their days as heels. Matt Striker makes some good analysis and Jerry Lawler just shoots him down with a “yeah, whatever”. You really get the impression that Lawler does not like Striker. Orton takes down Edge early and then hits a clothesline. Orton matches tend to have a slow pace to them. Orton hits a big knee drop which looked great from the low camera angle. Orton catapults Edge into the bottom rope and Edge rolls to the outside. Orton follows Edge who manages to push Randy into the barricade. Edge then suplexes Orton onto the barricade and rolls back into the ring to break up the count. A very slow start to the match.

Edge throws Orton back into the ring and then pins him for a near fall. Orton hits some kicks but Edge hits him with a knee before applying a body-scissors. Orton gets out of the hold but Edge keeps the advantage, working the mid-section. Edge then heads to the top but Orton hits him with some right hands and looks to hit a superplex which he eventually hits. The two men exchange right hands and Orton drops Edge with a couple of clotheslines. Orton hits a powerslam for a two count but Edge fights back with a big boot. Orton hits a hangmans DDT for a two count. Edge just managing to get his foot on the bottom rope there. Edge rolls out of the ring and drops Orton on the top rope before motioning for a spear but Randy counters it with a kick. Can I just say that Orton as a babyface doesn’t work. He motions for an RKO but Orton sells an arm injury and decides against it.

Orton kicks Edge out of the ring and follows him out but it’s advantage-Edge. He lays into Orton and then looks for a spear but Orton side-steps it and Edge hits the barricade. The referee then counts both men out! It’s a double count-out here and the crowd do not like that result. This match was slow. It wasn’t great but the psychology was good and I don’t actually mind the result.

Jack Swagger (c) vs. The Big Show – World Heavyweight Championship match

This is a first time PPV meeting between these two men. Swagger looks to try and take Big Show down early but Big Show just swats him away. Big Show then takes Swagger down and Swagger rolls out of the ring. Big Show does some press-ups in the ring which gets under Swaggers skin. Swagger gets back into the ring but Big Show takes him down with a big boot and follows it up with some chops. Big Show then stands all over Swagger before choking him on the ropes. Show sets up for a chokeslam but Swagger manages to avoid it and then rolls back out of the ring. Swagger gets back into the ring and hits a big chop block to the front of Big Show’s leg. Swagger follows it up with a shoulder charge for a two count. Swagger hits two Vader bombs for a two count. Big Show not only kicked out of that but he pressed Swagger out of the ring.

Swagger gets back into the ring and applies a front facelock. Big Show throws him off and hits a couple of clotheslines and a splash in the corner. It’s all Big Show now as he hits a shoulder charge and motions for a chokeslam. Swagger tries to kick his challenger away but Big Show forces him out of the ring. Swagger then grabs his World Heavyweight Championship belt and nails Big Show with it! The referee calls for the disqualification. Big Show wins the match but not the title! Swagger attacks Big Show with a chair after the match. Big Show manages to get the chair off Swagger, smash him with it and then chokeslam the champion onto it!

Rating: 3.5/10

Josh Mathews is backstage with Batista who says that he will be making John Cena scream “I Quit” tonight.

Eve Torres (c) vs. Maryse – WWE Divas Championship match

This is a first time PPV match between these two girls. It’s actually Eve’s first ever singles match on pay per view and she’s looking for her first ever victory too, she’s wrestled three match prior to this and lost them all. Maryse has wrestled a few more matches on PPV but only won once. Maryse starts the match with a cheap shot and then throws Eve into the ringpost. Maryse stomps away at Eve and forces her face into the ring mat. Both of these girls were in the Divas searches, Eve actually won her. Maryse locks on a camel clutch but Eve fights out of it just for Maryse to force Eve back down to the mat. Maryse forces Eve out of the ring with a knee and then celebrates. Maryse then exits the ring and looks for a high kick but Eve gets out of the way and Maryse kicks the ringpost. Eve rolls Maryse back into the ring and hits her with a clothesline and a couple of dropkicks.

Maryse slaps Eve but Eve fires back with a knee and a standing moonsault for a two count. Eve then hits a sunset flip for another two count and Maryse dropkicks her in the face for a near fall. The two girls slug it out and Eve hits a flatliner for a very near fall. Eve kicks Maryse in the face and then looks for a rolling senton but Maryse gets her knees up. Maryse laughs at Eve. Maryse sets up for her trademark DDT but Eve counters and then hits a move that is hard to describe but basically drove Maryse’s face into the canvas with her knees. Eve gets the three and retains her Divas Championship tonight.

There’s a video package hyping the match between John Cena and Batista.

John Cena (c) vs. Batista – Last Man Standing match for the WWE Championship

This is the fifth PPV match between these two men and they are tied at two wins a piece going into this match. This is the last time these men will ever face off (apparently). The bell rings and Batista grabs the mic and gives John Cena one chance to say “I Quit”. Technically Batista just said “I Quit”. The referee asks Cena if he wants to quit, Cena hams it up and then obviously says no. Cena jabs Batista with the mic and the fight goes to the outside where Cena swings a chair at Batista who ducks. In the ring and Batista hits a clothesline and a hard Irish whip. Batista hits a snapmare and a running kick before hitting the WWE Champion with right hands and elbows. Batista forces Cena into the ringpost and the referee asks Cena if he wants to quit. He doesn’t. Batista forces Cena to the outside and then rams him into the barricade.

Back in the ring and Batista hits a suplex. Cena start to build momentum and hits a couple of shoulder blocks and a side suplex before hitting the five knuckle shuffle. Cena sets up for the attitude adjustment but Batista holds on to the ropes. Batista pulls the referee in the way and then hits Cena with a spear. Batista locks on the rings of Saturn but Cena won’t quit. So far the only men to have won at last months Extreme Rules PPV and tonight are The Hart Dynasty. Cena looks to join them. Cena counters the rings of Saturn with an STF and Batista won’t quit. Cena breaks the hold and Batista doesn’t respond to the referee. Cena then grabs a bottle of water and revives Batista. Batista won’t quit still and he hits a spinebuster on Cena. Batista then hits a Batista bomb! Cena won’t quit. Batista leaves the ring and takes apart the Spanish announce table and the English commentators announce desk.

Batista sets up for a Batista bomb on one of the announces desks but Cena counters it and sets up for the attitude adjustment just for Batista to counters and hit Cena with a running powerslam through the Spanish announce table! Cena still won’t quit but it looks like he’s busted open as the trainer sees to him. Batista throws Cena over the barricade and follows him into the WWE Universe! Batista takes the fight into the crowd but you can’t see what’s going on because the camera doesn’t follow. Batista takes Cena up the stairs where he continues to lay into him. Cena still won’t quit. Batista sets up for a Batista bomb on the concrete but Cena fights him off and hammers him off the steps where security catches him. Batista still won’t quit. Cena hammers Batista back down the stairs over by the entrance ramp and then on to the entrance ramp. Batista grabs a chair from somewhere and jabs Cena with it.

Batista continues to lay into Cena with the chair up onto the top of the ramp but Cena still won’t quit. There is a car on the top of the stage as part of the set design. Batista gets into the car and starts it up before backing it to where Cena was but you can clearly see that Cena got out of the way. Cena drags Batista out of the car and then rams Batista’s head off the car a few times. Cena hits an attitude adjustment onto the hood of the car and Batista still won’t quit. Cena then grabs the mic and tells Batista that he was hoping he would say that. Cena takes Batista on to the top of the car and sets up for an attitude adjustment off the top of the car but Batista shouts “I Quit”! Cena hits the attitude adjustment anyway sending Batista through the top of the stage! Cena retains his WWE Championship tonight! Cena celebrates with his title but as the show goes off the air Sheamus comes out and takes Cena down with the pump kick!

Rating: 7.5/10

And that was Over The Limit 2010. This was a real hit and miss show with some decent matches and some really poor ones. It felt disappointing overall, especially coming off a decent enough Extreme Rules last month. The show started well with Kofi Kingston beating Drew McIntyre for the Intercontinental championship. Kofi is a really entertaining performer and rarely puts on a bad match. McIntyre is a strong heel at the moment and has a big future ahead of him. There’s something not quite clicking for me when it comes to McIntyre, I think it’s his look more than anything. I can see this feud continuing. Good way to kick things off. R-Truth then beat Ted DiBiase which surprised me. DiBiase really needs a push as a singles competitor and Truth never seems to win. It’s his first singles win on PPV ever. DiBiase had Virgil in his corner but Virgil didn’t really add much. He could barely walk and didn’t look up to much. A big win for R-Truth tonight.

Rey Mysterio beat CM Punk next in a really solid match. Probably their best match so far. The win came off as a bit of a fluke as Rey just reversed a pinfall and got the three. The ending was great though with CM Punk getting his head shaved. Either way the results would have been good but this is probably most surprising than if CM Punk had won. This was good though, it’s been a real quality feud between the two and the matches have been great. The Hart Dynasty defeated Chris Jericho and The Miz to retain their Tag Team Championships. That’s three PPV wins for three for The Hart Dynasty. I like these guys as champion, they feel like a proper tag team. I don’t see Jericho and Miz continuing to team up, it feels like it was just to complete the Jericho – Big Show – Miz circle. There aren’t many tag teams at the moment though, especially heel tag teams, unless The Dudebusters are in for a tag team title shot. I think they might de-value the belts though. Really good match between these four men tonight.

Randy Orton and Edge were up next and these are two very good wrestlers who don’t have a lot of chemistry. It was the same the last time these two met on PPV back at Vengeance 2004. Orton clearly got injured in this match, it looked like his arm. The match then ended up as a double count-out which the crowd hated. It’s funny how much people hate draws these days. I guess this feud continues if Orton isn’t too injured. A gimmick match might work better for these two. Jack Swagger and The Big Show were up next and sadly this match was poor. I don’t know what they were expecting but it wasn’t good. Big Show won the match by disqualification but Swagger keeps the title. Swagger has lost a lot of matches since becoming World Heavyweight Champion but he did get a big win over Randy Orton at Extreme Rules. This feud is bound to continue which I don’t think is a good thing. But Smackdown have been shafted since the draft and basically have no main event scene.

Eve Torres defeated Maryse to retain her Divas Championship. This match was on par with the Jack Swagger/Big Show match, nothing to write home about. Eve is getting a good push at the moment and she has improved a lot. She’ll have the likes of Maryse, Jillian Hall and Alicia Fox to deal with going forward. In the main event John Cena beat Batista once again to retain the WWE Championship. Batista said “I Quit” but got Cena’s finisher off the top of the car for good measure. There’s no coming back from this for Batista so I think this will rule him out of the main event picture for the time being. Sheamus attacks John Cena to clean the show so I think we know the direction of the WWE Championship going forward.
